UK flights resume after computer crash
      By Reuters June 3 2004 08:29

Flights to and from British airports resumed on Thursday after a glitch at the
main air traffic control centre temporarily grounded all planes, a spokesman
for National Air Traffic Services (NATS) said.

"We are fully operational now. We are now dealing with the backlog of delays.
It affected all airports in England and Wales," the spokesman told Reuters.

"It was a problem with the flight data processing system. We are looking into
that now. It was not sabotage," he added.

A spokesman for British Airways said flights were resuming at London's
Heathrow, the world's busiest international airport, but there was a huge
      backlog of traffic.

"Some flights are arriving at Heathrow and our next lot of flights will be
leaving, although there will be heavy delays," he told Reuters.

A spokeswoman for Manchester airport in northern England said the system
crashed at just after 0500 GMT, but was partially restored by 0555 GMT.

"I am told the system is now operational again, and flights are restarting. But
there will obviously be heavy delays," she said. "There will obviously be flow
      problems."

Reuters reporter Paul Majendie at Heathrow airport said he had been told there
would be delays of at least three hours.

A BA spokesman earlier blamed the problem on computers at the Swanick air
traffic control centre operated by NATS.

The computer system there was several years behind schedule being brought into
service in January 2002 and has suffered several problems since then.

Just months after the 600-million-pound ($1.11 billion) centre at Swanick in
Hampshire went operational there were reports that air traffic controllers were
being plagued by "ghost" data on their screens making it hard to identify real
      aircraft.
