(PDM staff with CTK) 8 November - Thailand has shown interest in the Czech L-
159 subsonic fighters and if the command of the Thai Air Force recommends the
purchase to the local defence ministry, the Thai government will deal with
the Czech offer, the press department of the Czech Defence Ministry told CTK
yesterday.
The sale of the aircraft, manufactured by Aero Vodochody, was discussed by
Deputy Defence Minister Pavel Masek in Thailand in late October.
The army has not yet disclosed how many planes it would sell to Thailand or
their price.
The Thai Royal Air Force uses the old L-39 types with which the fighters'
crews are trained. Aero recently completed general reconstruction of 34 of
the aircraft.
In the 1990s, the Czech army bought from Aero 72 L-159s, but due to budget
cuts and an army reform, it has only kept 24 of them and it has put the rest
up for sale.
In the past, interest was voiced by Egypt, India, Greece and Hungary, but no
deal has materialised. Aero Vodochody is considering offering licences for
the production of the aircraft in order to enhance its competitiveness.
