There was no controversy with the exposition Shadows of Humor until the
politician, Zbigniew Michniowsky, interfered with the operations of the city
gallery in Bielsko Biala. He created the controversy; even after speaking with
him in his office, I fail to understand his reasons.

The artwork that Michniowski asked to be censored is disturbing, but it is not
presented as problematic in a Polish cultural context. It is a work of art, and
it is the creation of a respected Czech artist.

Michniowsky demanded that the artwork be removed from the gallery "by Monday."
In doing so, the politician censored the exhibition. He created a climate of
fear and panic, and only took responsibility for his own statements after it
became obvious in the media that he was the instigator of the controversy.

Bielsko Biala politicians have said to cultural people in town that they do not
want controversy. I am mystified why Mr Michniowsky is trying to create a
      controversy.

As a curator in the exhibition Shadows of Humor, I made no plans to create an
exhibition in Cieszyn until Zbignew Michniowsky censored the show in Bielsko
      Biala.

I did not come to Poland to interfere with local Politics. And I frankly wish
that local politicians did not interfere with public discourse

Michniowski is a very, very local "politician". So his decision is as local as
stupid which doesn't understand what does "art" mean!!! Trying to convince him
(or similar "politicians" fighting for their jobs/earning, etc) today - before
community election (and community job is the only what he can "perform"
probably) - is sensless totally. Take it easy. S pozdrvem.

          Dear Sumer55,
Thank you for reacting to my post. It doesn't matter to me really who The
"Censor of Bielsko" is, his politics or how productive he might be in the
Quixotic tast to bring Euro-Windmills to the Beskyd Euroregion.

I did not visit Bielsko to make any political point, but this politician, in
censoring the show at BWA, interfered with my job. But that's not really the
purpose in bringing this up again.

Censorship is an insidious subject so obscene on its own, that it must be caught
and defined wherever it emerges. Jacek Krywult, in defending City Censor
Michniowski, argues reserves the right to protect his consituents from seeing
          disturbing art on city property.

Which is worse? my bringing David Cerny's Shark to your town, Krywult preventing
people in your town from seeing the work, or City Censor Michniowski going to
the Polish press, pretending with the mendacious statement that his crass
gesture of censorship cannot be characterized as censorship?

Maybe it is that in Bielsko Biala, horses are in fact cows. But for now, I
understand that unlike, say, the Brooklyn Museum of Art (a city gallery that in
1999 fought and won a freedom of expression case against New York Mayor Rudloph
Giuliani), there are no serious civic authorities to protect the city gallery of
          Bielsko from the city government.

So until serious efforts to build sane civil society emerge, all we can do is
present Michniowski for who he is: the Censor of Bielsko.
