Over the coming weeks, we will publish a series of factual features in this new section in response to a number of myths that currently circulate about our organisation and our staff. The Spokesperson´s Service spends a lot of time addressing these myths and we would now like to share this factual information with all staff.
Why? Because it's important that you, the people who do the work for the administration, are able to separate truth from fiction in relation to the jobs we do, how much we cost the European taxpayer and the context in which we work.
Second, as each one of us is an ambassador for our organisation, it is important that we have factual information to use in our daily contacts with others.
Third, the Press very often only mentions the myths, and very rarely touches on the reality.
So in this spirit, did you know that?
• The total EU administrative budget is €8.3 billion – roughly 6% of the total EU budget. This is compared to €2,200 billion spent by Member State governments on administration.
• EU staff salaries are linked to public service salaries in 8 EU Member States through a formula (the 'method'), so suggestions that Member States are cutting salaries whereas the EU institutions are not, are misguided. In 2011, the application of the 'method' delivered a loss of -1.8% in purchasing power to EU officials.
• The city of Paris employs around 40,000 state civil servants – compared to the 33,000 active EU officials serving almost half a billion European citizens.
• We pay among the highest pension contributions in the EU at 11.6% of our gross basic salary (in France it is 7.85%, the UK 3.5% and in the Netherlands 6.42%). In Germany, Bulgaria, Estonia or Sweden, civil servants contribute nothing to finance their pensions.
