Blueprint for the Wayenberg crèche
The VIPs are won over
Visitors unlike any others
Is the Wayenberg crèche on its way to becoming the EP’s most famous building?
On Wednesday, 22 March it was the turn of Mia De Vits and Astrid Lulling,
Quaestors, Sylvia-Yvonne Kaufmann, Vice-President responsible for equal
opportunities, and Louis Grech, rapporteur for the 2007 budget, to form an
opinion on the quality of the building and its facilities. Gérard Onesta,
Vice-President responsible for building policy, had already visited the
crèche on another occasion.

Yves Quitin, the human resources manager, and Gianluca Brunetti, head of the
unit for relations with staff in Brussels, accompanied by Ms Genso (in charge
of childcare in Brussels), Mr De Backer and Mr Colantonio of DG IFIN,
welcomed this top-notch group.
Strong points and educational plan
Yves Quitin briefly introduced the visitors to the crèche administrators,
Maryse Murez and Luc Ruel of the company ‘Rire et Grandir’, and announced tha
it would open on 2 May 2006.
Gianluca Brunetti discussed the crèche’s strong points:
first crèche in a building belonging to the EP;
completely renewed building, designed from scratch as an ultramodern crèche;
close to the EP (around 10 minutes on foot), in a very quiet area;
180 places, so no more waiting lists in the medium term;
creation of around 50 jobs;
no negative impact on life in the area;
the crèche will reach its cruising speed by the end of the year.
Maryse Murez and Luc Ruel, who between them have 20 years’ experience in the
field of early childhood, described their educational plan in six points:
safety, listening, respect, pleasure, self-confidence and education. The
visitors saw that the first 13 paediatric nurses employed were undergoing
training there that day in the educational plan, communication and languages,
as required by the EP. The head chef, Olivier Van Dorpe, and Dr Danielle
Debluts, the crèche’s paediatrician, were also present.
Official visit and numerous questions
The visit to the premises was a pleasant immersion into the colourful world
of early childhood. Whether they were in the dayrooms, fitted out for the
different age groups (raised area for playpens, children still visible for
their physical and emotional safety), the family room, the charming library
suitable for all ages, the dormitory (beds on wheels), the 3* and super-safe
kitchen installations, the covered parking reserved for parents, the
infirmary or the lovely garden, the visitors did not hesitate to ask very
specific questions: fate of the Eastman crèche staff, linguistic range of the
staff employed, details of the educational plan, safety requirements, quality
of the food, access facilities for parents, etc.
Live reactions
Mia De Vits: ‘It’s fantastic! I am impressed that the educational plan takes
into account not only the competences of each age group but also the multi-
cultural aspects involved with this particular group of children, for example
in terms of the menus, the music or the cultural customs’.
Astrid Lulling: ‘It’s top-class and just wonderful’.
Sylvia-Yvonne Kaufmann: ‘The children will be happy here. They will have a
warm welcome. It’s modern, colourful, bright and airy. I like the idea of the
library, a place where you can take refuge to forget your fears’.
Louis Grech: ‘It all looks like it is going to function very well. I am going
to be a grandfather soon and I hope that my future grandchild can go to a
crèche of this standard’.
