OTTAWA, Ontario — A backbench lawmaker from Justin Trudeau’s own caucus is accusing the prime minister of dividing and stigmatizing Canadians by politicizing vaccine mandates and Covid-19 restrictions.

Joël Lightbound delivered the stunning, scathing assessment Tuesday in Ottawa with the big rigs of the so-called Freedom Convoy just outside the door. The convoy protests against Covid measures have grabbed global attention and paralyzed the Canada’s capital city for more than a week.

      Ambassador Bridge on Tuesday
Truck drivers are blocking a key border crossing between the US and Canada, sparking fears of economic disruption.
While limited US-bound traffic is being allowed to cross the Ambassador Bridge in Ontario, Canada-bound lanes from Detroit remain closed.
Business associations have called for the bridge to be immediately cleared to ensure the steady flow of goods.
The protests across Canada against vaccine rules and Covid restrictions are now two weeks old.
Truckers are demonstrating against a rule that requires them to be vaccinated to cross the US-Canada border. But the protests have grown to include anger at restrictions and at Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government generally.
They have mostly centred on the capital, Ottawa, and another border crossing between Montana and Alberta has also been blocked.
The closure of the Ambassador Bridge is particularly significant because nearly 30% of annual trade between the US and Canada comes through it.
"I've already heard from automakers and food grocers," Canadian Transport Minister Omar Alghabra said on Tuesday. "This is really a serious cause for concern".
Lorry drivers rallying in solidarity with the demonstrators in Ottawa first blocked the bridge on Monday afternoon.

Several political commentators praised freelance journalist Rupa Subramanya, who talked to over 100 Canadian truckers protesting COVID-19 vaccine mandates in Ottawa, Canada, to determine "what the truckers want," and contrasted her coverage with some of the liberal media's villainization of the group.

B.J. Dichter, a spokesman for the Freedom Convoy, told Subramanya that he was vaccinated, and he believes that most of the truckers were as well.

"I’m Jewish," he said. "I have family in mass graves in Europe. And apparently I’m a white supremacist."

Dichter alluded to some more negative media coverage of the protests that called the Freedom Convoy a "cult" and a "threat to democracy." The Ottawa Police Chief used the words "nationwide insurrection" to describe the protests, which was echoed by many in the media. Many headlines have also focused on "swastikas and public urination" and protesters carrying swastika and Confederate flags and defacing statues, while the truckers have told a different story, arguing their demonstration was "peaceful."

The injunction approved by the Ontario Superior Court of Justice came into effect at 19:00 local time (midnight GMT) on Friday.
The Ambassador Bridge, linking Windsor, Ontario, with Detroit, Michigan, has been blockaded for five days.
Truckers' protests against Covid restrictions are also ongoing at other border crossings and in Ottawa.

Police have cleared the remaining protesters blocking a key bridge between Canada and the United States, after a week of disruption.
Canada's trucker protests against Covid vaccine certification to cross the border have paralysed trade across the Ambassador Bridge in Windsor, Ontario.
A judge issued an order on Friday to break up the protest, but dozens of demonstrators remained in defiance.
Police have now cleared the road, though the bridge remains closed.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has taken the unprecedented step of invoking the Emergencies Act to crack down on anti-vaccine mandate protests.
Mr Trudeau said the scope of the measures would be "time-limited", "reasonable and proportionate" and would not see the military deployed.
Without a court order, banks will be able freeze personal accounts of anyone linked with the protests.
Hundreds of protesters remain in Canada's capital city.

Emergencies Act, czyli przepisy o sytuacjach nadzwyczajnych. Zagroził, że protestujący mogą zostać odcięci od kont bankowych - informuje BBC.

A lot is happening in the news. Here's one item that we noticed: Canada canceled democracy last night. And the remarkable thing is no one in this country seemed to notice that it happened. There was no outcry from our political class, as their friend Justin Trudeau declared martial law in response to an entirely peaceful protest from his country's working class.

Zapoczątkowane w Kanadzie „Konwoje wolności” pojawiają się teraz w kolejnych krajach Zachodu. I pokazują, w którą stronę skręca współczesna polityka.
