Worker Registration Scheme And Work Permit Figures Published

The worker registration scheme, set up by the Government to monitor the
impact of EU accession on the UK labour market and restrict access to
benefits, is working effectively with accession nationals continuing to
register, figures published by the Government today show.
The latest quarterly statistics for October to December 2004 show that just
over 40,000 people from the accession states applied to the scheme, bringing
the total number of applicants since May 2004 to around 130,000.
Applications have fallen since their peak between May and July, with figures
for December at around 8,000. Up to around 40 per cent of applicants are
thought to have been in the UKbefore 1 May 2004and to have legitimised their
status.
The report provides an ongoing picture of the type of jobs and geographical
areas people are coming to work in, helping to fill gaps in industries such
as hospitality, and catering, administration, business, management,
agriculture, health and construction, right across the UK.
The number of accession nationals claiming out-of-work benefit remains small
(less than 800) and 97 per cent of applicants had their claims refused
immediately. The vast majority of workers are young and single, and many are
doing key jobs to support public
