Kala Vandana presents Tales of Temple Dance, a dance drama in the Indian
clas! sical dance style - Bharatanatyam on May 31, 2003. Kala Vandana is
one of the most popular dance companies featured several times in the San
Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival and loudly applauded by the bay area audience.
Created and choreographed by artistic director Sundara Swaminathan, Tales of
Temple Dance will enact the mythical origin of Bharatanatyam in the Heaven,
its journey to earth, its history as a temple dance by Devadasi, its
transformation to courtesan dance and subsequent near extinction; then its
rebirth, due to the efforts of late Mrs. Rukmini Devi and other eminent
scholars, and its ev! olution to wide spread popularity in India and in the
west. It will take the audience in a breathtaking journey through time,
showing the evolution of Bharatanatyam, from millions of years ago to the
contemporary stage. Sundara Swaminathan will perform, along with over fifty
well-trained Kala Vandana dancers accompanied by well-accomplished visiting
musicians from India. Adorned in magnificent silk costumes and dancing in
the settings of Heaven and centuries old temples, Tales of Temple Dance is
sure to enthrall the audience.
