With SB Dance, the footwork is the least of the experience
Christine Hasegawa is sitting in a galvanized bucket surrounded by ping-
pong balls loosely confined in a ring. Stephen Brown kicks the metal edging
lightly, making the balls collide and clatter against each other on the black
rubber floor.
"I love to watch these move," says Brown.
It's not easy to tell by looking, but Hasegawa and Brown are busy making
a dance.
"We're working on a duet," explains Hasegawa.
"A duet with three people," Brown adds, helpfully.
Salt Lake City supports a well-regarded ballet company, two modern-dance
companies and the Children's Dance Theater. High schools have big dance
programs and performing companies, and there are 200 dance majors and
graduate students studying dance here.
Nevertheless, no one does with dance quite what Stephen Brown does with
his ad-hoc company, SB Dance.
And this year, he's doing it twice: participating in the Cathedral of the
Madeleine's Festival of the Arts as well as presenting his annual show at
Rose Wagner.
Both dances are typically undefinable
