New Dance/Meditation Class in Marin with Carmen Carnes/VedaDance

NEW CLASS IN MARIN STARTING NOVEMBER 6th
Starting in November, Carmen Carnes/VedaDance will offer a new contemporary
movement class in Marin County at the Laughing Mama studio in fairfax on
thursdays at 6:00 pm.
The class will be a release-based contemporary movement experience that will
begin with a yoga and mindfullness meditation warmup. The class is designed
to: increase range of motion and articulation throughout the body, build an
awareness of moment-to-moment possibilities, and facilitate a holisti! c
body/mind integration through movement. Other influences come from Persian
dance, Flamenco, Balinese dance, Indian dance, gymnastics, and martial arts.
The class will be an intermediate level, appropriate for people with some
movement experience and more experienced movers. Drop-ins are welcome and the
class will be $12. Bring a yoga mat if you have one.

Carmen Carnes Biography
Dancer/choreographer Carmen Carnes is the artistic director of the emerging
dance company, Carmen Carnes/VedaDance. Carmen works with the mediums of
movement, music, and visual art to create stirring performance/meditations.
Informed by many different tr! aditional arts, Carmen has created her own
unique physical language through extensive study and investigation. Carmen
studied in the MFA program in dance at UCLA, and received her B.A. in dance
from Mills College. Her choreography has been presented in San Francisco,
Marin, Los Angeles, and in Copenhagen, Denmark. With a foundation in
postmodern dance, Carmen has also explored Balinese, Javanese, Flamenco,
Persian, and Central Asian dance forms; yoga, Tai Chi, Panchat Silat, and Jiu
Jitsu. Her early training included 8 years as an elite rhythmic gymnast on
the National Team, and 12 years studying ballet. Carmen has taught dance at
studios in the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and in Copenhagen. She has danced for
Namah Ensemble, Eko Supriyanto, Gamelan Sekar Jaya, Ballet Afsaneh, and Erica
Essner Performance Co-op. Awards include the Will Rogers Memorial
Fellowship and The Jean Irwin Award for excellence in choreography at UCLA, a
Next Generation Grant from the California Arts Cou! ncil and a recent Marin
Arts Council Grant for choreography.
