"Poland, unfortunately, has not done much to combat anti-Semitism, despite
its official condemnation of anti-Semitism,” said Gebert. (...) Some church
leaders, notably Poznan’s cardinal, are positively disposed toward Jews, but
they are “marginal voices” in Poland. (...) Postwar restitution is another
problem roiling Poland’s relations with Israel, but it is expected to be
resolved within the foreseeable future. (...) legislation for individual
property losses has yet to be enacted, making Poland virtually unique in
Europe. Two factors account for the fact that Poland has resisted such
legislation, Gebert said. Poland fears that 3.5 million ethnic German
expellees will also raise claims, and anti-Semitic Poles oppose individual
compensation to Jews. (...) Gebert said that Poland’s current foreign
minister, Stefan Meller, is of Jewish origin, as was his predecessor.
