CHRONICLES - A LAMENTATION ****

AURORA NOVA @ ST STEPHENS (Venue 8)

MONTHS of painstaking research has gone into Piesn Kozla Theatre’s new show,
leaving the Polish company fully versed in the art of the lamentation. Which,
given the funereal setting for most songs in the genre, must have been fairly
sombre work, but the end more than justifies the means. Chronicles is a show
dripping with atmosphere; a powerful exploration of life, death and mythology.
Opening with a very primal wailing, backed by a constant and hauntingly
effective low drone, the show bursts into theatricality. It would seem that
lamentations through the ages have not always been truthful affairs - families
would embellish tales of their loved one’s achievements for dramatic effect at
the funeral - something Piesn Kozla use to great effect, as they blend
traditional songs from Europe and the Far East with an ancient Sumerian epic
dating back 5,000 years.

Backed only by an occasional accordion, the performers create a wall of sound
to accompany their highly physical pursuits: a couple dancing with an almost
violent passion; a woman giving birth; two men fighting. The lights rise and
fall from spotlight to darkness, but the intensity never drops. Featuring
performers from Scandinavia, France, Poland and Britain, the polyphonic singing
and heated monologues are delivered in a variety of tongues, but Chronicles
speaks for itself on many levels. In one particularly memorable display of
strength and grace, three men traverse a large table back and forth, their bare-
chested bodies swooping low before landing with remarkable silence.

"Pieśń Kozła" zasługuje na sponsoring, powiedziałbym że zasługuje dużo, dużo
bardziej na pomoc miasta, niż Maryla Rodowicz i inne gwiazdy koncertu Anioły
Europy.

Pozdrawiam goraco z Edynburga. Co prawda spektaklu nie widzialam, ale
wspominala mi o nim kolezanka pracujaca przy Fringe. Duze brawa, pokazujemy
calemu swiatu, ze jestesmy!
