g_a_military_giant_in_the_Middle_East_and_therefore_a_threat_to_the_stability
_of_the_entire_region._His_war_with_Iran_was_proof_of_this._The_U.S._and_othe
r_industrialized_Western_nations_could_not_risk_the_loss_of_oil_from_the_area
._Kuwait_is_the_second_largest_source_of_petroleum_in_the_Middle_East_and_so_
the_Iraqi_invasion_of_Kuwait_sent_the_world_oil_market_into_a_frenzy._Iraqi_f
orces_then_gathered_their_forces_on_the_border_with_Saudi_Arabia,_the_second_
largest_supplier_of_oil_in_the_world._This_in_turn_brought_the_military_might
_of_the_United_States_into_the_conflict._There_are_several_reasons_why_Saddam
_Hussein_invaded_Kuwait._After_the_eight_year_war_with_Iran_over_territorial_
disputes_and_religious_rivalries_between_the_Iranian_Shiites_and_Iraqi_Sunni_
factions,_Iraq_had_a_massive_debt_to_many_Arab_nations_including_Kuwait._The_
rulers_of_these_nations_wanted_some_of_their_money_back_but_Iraq_thought_they
_were_ingrates_and_were_ungrateful_for_defending_the_Arab_emirs_from_the_Iran
ian_Islamic_fundamentalism._The_Arab_emirs_were_afraid_that_the_Islamic_funda
mentalists_would_rise_against_the_government_and_eventually_take_over_the_gov
ernment_as_they_had_Iran_against_the_Shah._Kuwait_was_also_afraid_of_this_and
_so_they_supported_the_Iraqi_Arabs_against_the_Iranian_Persians._The_funds_th
at_the_Gulf_countries_lent_to_Iraq_were_used_to_buy_high_tech_weapons._These_
high_tech_weapons_made_Iraq_one_of_the_largest_armies_in_the_world_and_a_forc
e_to_contend_with._Ironically_much_of_the_money_and_weapons_came_from_the_cou
ntries_that_united_to_fight_against_him._The_Gulf_countries_bankrolled_him_wh
ile_the_Western_nations,_who_had_many_defense_contractors_going_out_of_busine
ss_because_of_the_end_of_the_Cold_War,_supplied_him_with_the_weapons_to_fight
_Iran_and_later_Kuwait_and_the_Coalition._With_a_large_army_like_his,_it_woul
d_be_very_easy_to_defeat_the_far_smaller_Kuwaiti_army_compared_to_his._Oil_ha
d_made_Kuwait_one_of_the_richest_and_most_progressive_countries_in_the_world.
_This_desert_land_is_one_of_the_world's_leading_producers_having_over_one-
tenth_of_the_world's_known_petroleum_reserves._This_is_all_in_20,150_square_k
ilometres,_a_little_smaller_than_the_state_of_New_Jersey._Kuwait_is_one_of_th
e_world's_wealthiest_nations_in_terms_of_national_income_per_person._It_has_f
ree_primary_and_secondary_education_free_health_and_social_services_and_no_in
come_tax._There_was_much_to_protect._All_of_this_was_attractive_and_irritatin
g_to_Saddam_who_would_and_did_use_a_fraction_of_his_army_to_attack_and_invade
_Kuwait_in_which_it_only_took_the_Iraqi_army_6_hours_to_reach_the_capital_cit
y._After_the_invasion_they_had_about_19%
_of_the_world's_known_oil_reserves._Historically_Iraq_had_claimed_that_it_had
_a_right_to_Kuwait._Saddam_was_jealous_that_Kuwait_was_in_control_of_the_two_
islands_needed_for_a_deep_water_shipping_port:_the_Bubiyan_and_Warbah_islands
._These_islands_along_with_some_parts_of_Kuwait_were_a_part_of_old_Mesopotami
a_which_the_Ottoman_Turks_conquered._The_Ottoman_Empire_was_defeated_during_W
orld_War_I_and_the_British_made_their_own_lines_in_the_sand,_dividing_up_the_
land_according_to_their_own_strategic_needs_and_in_the_process_recklessly_div
iding_up_ancient_communities_and_boundaries_that_had_been_recognized_for_deca
des._Most_of_Mesopotamia_became_Iraq_and_some_other_parts_to_Kuwait._In_1961,
_Kuwait_became_independent_and_the_Iraqis_threatened_to_invade_except_that_Br
itish_troops_kept_the_peace._This_was_to_be_the_first_of_many_border_skirmish
es_which_included_Iraqi_missiles_fired_at_Kuwaiti_oil_installations_and_the_r
eflagging_of_Kuwaiti_oil_tankers_during_the_Iran-
Iraq_War_in_which_U.S._ships_patrolled_the_Persian_Gulf_and_Kuwaiti_tankers_w
ere_reflagged_with_U.S._flags._The_Iraqi_government_had_also_accused_the_Kuwa
itis_of_stealing_2.5_billion_barrels_of_oil_from_its_Rumaila_oil_fields_by_sl
iding_drills_into_Iraqi_oil_pipelines._They_had_also_accused_Kuwait_of_exceed
ing_OPEC_oil_production,_which_had_dropped_the_price_of_oil_from_$20_a_barrel
_to_$13_a_barrel_in_the_first_six_months_of_1990._This_meant_one_billion_doll
ars_less_for_Iraq_everytime_that_price_of_an_oil_barrel_went_down_by_a_dollar
._Saddam_said_he_would_stop_them_from_continuing_aggressive_action._Iraq’s_fo
reign_minister_Tariq_Aziz_later_said_in_a_letter_to_the_Arab_league_that_Kuwa
it_is_systematically,_deliberately_and_continuously_harming_Iraq_by_encroachi
ng_on_its_territory,_stealing_oil,_and_destroying_its_economy._“Such_behavior
_amounts_to_military_aggression._These_were_just_signs_of_the_Desert_Storm_to
_come._Personally,_Saddam_Hussein_had_reasons_to_want_to_go_to_war_against_th
e_Western_nations._He_grew_up_as_a_young_boy_hating_the_British_for_imprisoni
ng_his_uncle_that_had_cared_for_him._Later,_he_joined_the_Baath_Party_which_w
as_based_on_a_platform_of_Arab_unity_and_as_a_member_was_sent_to_try_to_assas
sinate_General_Abdul_Karim_Qasim_who_they_believed_to_be_very_friendly_with_t
he_Western_nations._By_going_to_war,_he_hoped_to_foster_Arab_unity_against_th
e_Western_nations,_like_an_Islamic_holy_war_against_the_infidels._He_also_bel
ieved_that_it_was_his_destiny_to_fulfill_the_prophecy_of_ruling_an_Arab_natio
n_streching_from_Euphrates_to_the_Suez._The_Western_and_Gulf_nations_united_t
ogether_to_form_a_coalition_to_fight_against_Iraq_that_followed_the_United_Na
tions_resolution_that_Iraq_must_pull_out_of_Kuwait_on_January_15,_1991._They_
had_several_reasons_for_wanting_Iraq_out_of_Kuwait._The_two_main_reasons_are_
the_vast_amounts_of_oil_in_the_region_which_account_for_53%
_of_the_world's_known_petroleum_reserves_and_the_stability_of_the_nations_tha
t_have_the_oil._The_two_biggest_producers_in_the_region_are_Saudi_Arabia_and_
Kuwait._The_Saudis_were_afraid_that_Iraq_would_invade_Saudi_Arabia_just_like_
Kuwait._The_United_States_depends_on_Middle_East_petroleum_for_about_25%
_of_its_energy_needs_and_other_Western_nations_even_more._Other_sources_of_po
wer_are_generally_too_expensive_to_be_practical_or_are_still_under_developmen
t._So_any_disruption_of_oil_from_this_region_would_seriously_affect_the_econo
mies_of_the_Western_nations,_just_as_they_were_slipping_into_a_recession,_whi
ch_would_not_be_very_good_for_the_leaders_of_these_countries_at_the_ballot_bo
x._However_going_to_war_or_even_the_real_possibility_of_it_would_give_a_big_s
hort_term_boost_to_the_economies_of_these_nations_by_increasing_the_price_for
_a_barrel_of_oil_which_would_allow_oil_companies_to_make_bigger_profits_and_t
here_would_be_more_exploration_in_North_America_to_discover_new_sources_of_oi
l._This_would_help_boost_the_stock_markets_by_increasing_positive_activity_in
_the_trading_of_shares._Also_by_going_to_war,_it_would_create_jobs_in_many_se
ctors_of_the_economy_from_the_defense_contractors_to_the_service_industries_d
own_the_line._The_main_reason_that_the_Coalition_was_formed_was_to_protect_th
e_vital_interests_in_the_often_unstable_Middle_East._The_Middle_East_has_been
_the_source_of_many_of_the_world's_wars_after,_sometimes_almost_to_point_of_g
oing_nuclear._The_Arab_partners_joined_the_Coalition_so_what_had_happened_to_

ers_wanted_to_ensure_a_steady_supply_of_cheap_oil_and_the_invasion_of_Kuwait_
had_risen_the_price_of_oil_along_with_creating_instability_in_the_Middle_East
._The_best_way_to_restore_order_to_the_region_and_create_some_stability_was_t
