SANTIAGO (AP)--Chile on Tuesday received the first two of 10 F-16 warplanes
bought from the United States, part of massive war material purchases that
have worried its neighbors in spite of assurances that the country is only
renewing obsolete material.
Speaking at the planes reception ceremony at a military airport near
Santiago, President Ricardo Lagos insisted Chile is not breaking the regional
military balance.
"What we are doing is just replacing material that has completed its useful
life," Lagos said. He said that Chile clearly and timely informed neighboring
countries about all its purchases, that include two submarines made by a
Spanish-French consortium, eight second-hand frigrates - four from Britain
and four from Holland - and 100 German-made Leopard tanks.
In addition it is buying 18 more second hand F-16s from the Dutch air force.
While the government has not disclosed the total cost of its military
purchases, published reports indicate that the F-16s alone will cost $745
million.
