The foremost UK tick biologist, PROFESSOR SARAH RANDOLPH, well-known
U.S.
psychiatrist DR ROBERT BRANSFIELD MD and skin specialist DR KLAUS
EISENDLE
are speaking to our CONFERENCE on 18TH JULY 2008.

PROFESSOR SARAH RANDOLPH of the OXFORD TICK RESEARCH GROUP is the
foremost
academic in the UK on the subject of tick ecology. Whenever the BBC
need an
authoritative comment on ticks, it is to Professor Randolph that they
turn.
This is a great opportunity to hear her speak about her work.

DR. ROBERT BRANSFIELD MD is one of the foremost US psychiatrists in
clinical
practice who will speak about the effects of Lyme infection on the
nervous
system. Whilst we might think some psychiatrists are paying too much
attention to behaviouralism, Dr. Bransfield has been asking a
fundamental
question which can be summed up as follows:
** If there are still infectious microbes involved when a person is
showing
psychiatric symptoms as part of an infectious illness, how do doctors
distinguish this and ensure any patient who needs appropriate
antibiotic
therapy, actually receives it? **
A vital question and an absolute must for most of the people here! In
addition, in the afternoon Dr. Bransfield will speak about CHRONIC
LYME
DISEASE.
Dr. Bransfield has contributed greatly to thinking in this field.
Many of
our LLMDs belong to his Microbes and Mental Illness discussion group.

DR KLAUS EISENDLE will talk about the LIMITATIONS OF TESTING in
dermatological Lyme disease and why a gold standard is still needed
in
testing. He will also speak about his own research and give an
overview of
all the types of rashes and skin manifestations associated with
borrelial
infection. A fascinating field I¹m sure you¹ll agree, especially for
those
of us who never had a classic bull¹s eye rash, but did have other
strange
rashes going on!

Our own UK doctors DR DAVID OWEN and DR SARAH CHISSELL will be
speaking.

Dr Owen will chair the meeting and will speak on the difficulties of
diagnosis.

Dr Chissell will speak about Lyme in pregnancy plus give us an update
on the
case study of her son that she told us about last year.
