Hertha sign striker Wichniarek

Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin have already made their first transfer - for the
season after next! The capial-city side signed Polish international striker
Artur Wichniarek from newly-promoted Bundesliga team Arminia Bielefeld.

The clinical finisher, who has won the 2nd Division Golden Boot for the last
two seasons, will officially begin his four-year contract on 1 July 2003

On 5 June, Hertha Berlin announced the transfer of Arminina Bielefeld striker
Artur Wichniarek. Although it is still uncertain whether the lethal 25-year-old
striker will move in the closed season, the Hertha camp are delighted with the
deal. The four-year contract will begin officially on 1 July 2003, should
Wichniarek intend to see out his term in Bielefeld. Hertha have secured the
option to buy the Pole out of the existing agreement for the 2002/2003
campaign: "Should things work out, and we can get him here before 2003, we will
of course seal the deal", confirmed Hertha club manager Dieter Hoeness.

Clinical finisher

Standing at 6ft tall, and leading goalscorer in the league with 20 goals,
Wichniarek was head and shoulders above the other front-men in the 2nd Divsion
last season. His contribution was vital to the promotion at the end of the
season. With such references behind him, Wichniarek was also head-hunted by the
likes of Bayer Leverkusen and Werder Bremen. All the more reason for Hoeness to
celebrate the coup: "We are delighted to have signed the top 2nd Divison goal-
scorer of the past two seasons", said the manager.



Kommt Bielefelds Wichniarek schon diese Saison?
Hoeneß: "Es gab letzte Woche ein Telefonat mit Arminia. Da wurde klar, dass die
Ablöse-Kluft einfach zu groß ist. Bielefeld will 3 Mio EUR.. Wichniarek ist
erst fürs nächste Jahr vorgesehen. Wir nehmen ihn aber auch sofort, dann jedoch
nur zu unseren Bedingungen."
