I realise well this is a polish forum. Never the less I decided to
post my open question here at "Gazeta Wyborcza" jazz opinion
section. I'm a person whose job character obliges to change place
very often. And so, I've been living in a few european countries
over the past few years. Czeska Republika , Slovensko , Germany ,
France, Greece and most recently Spain. Now Poland. As diverse as
these lands may seem the presence of our beloved jazz always tends
to transform black & white into some shade of gray.At least amongst
jazz listeners.
My adventure with Herbie Hancocks music began early in my life. By
coincidence actually. When I was 6 years old my father came back
from a conference in the States. He brought back with him "The
Headhunters - Survival of the Fittest" LP recording. He thought the
cover looked hip

At that time I didn't apreciate what it had to
offer. No wonder, I was just a kido suddenly confronted with this
weird sounding noise. No disrespect...try to view from a slight
diferent perspective

. Anyways, I'll get to the point. Ive joined
this forum to put you in front of these two matters:
1)Herbie is a diverse man. No doubt about that. But are the tastes
of his listeners also as diverse? My question to all you polish jazz
fans is wich of Herbies albums would you give the highest ranks and
more importantly why?To be honest, for me this is sort of a survey
I've been doing in every country I visited. From my polish friends
I've heard that "GW" is a newspaper uniting intelectuals in this
country. Isnt there a better place for me to ask?
2)You listen to a couple of tracks over and over again when you are
a kid, you're practicaly raised on these couple of tracks. Then you
somehow forget about that particular piece of music due to whatever
reason. You leave it for lets say 12 years. When you come back to it
by accident or intentionaly after that time it amounts to NOTHING
you have heard so far. Every note, the atmosphere, the melody are
engraved so deep in your brain curvatures you put these sounds in
front of all you've encountered in music so far. Dont you think
mother nature is unfair when it comes to this amazing phenomenon? I
mean, shouldn't music I hear now or recently have the same chance of
having such a strong influence on me?I'm describing the experience I
had with "Headhunters".That does not mean of course that immediately
I'm placing it as my numero uno album but definetly in between my
favourites.
ps:I allow myself to be of anonymous nationality to avoid the
unnesecary
Thanks so much for taking this post seriously and thoughtfully. medNG
