"NEW YORK — The House of Creed is launching its newest scent, Original
Vetiver, which is due to appear on counter today at Neiman Marcus.
The unisex fragrance will be Creed’s 42nd scent distributed in the U.S. and
the first since International Cosmetics and Perfumes became Creed’s
distributor in North America in February. The brand was previously handled by
Laurice Rahme.
Original Vetiver will be Creed’s second vetiver scent. The first, launched in
1948, is an eau de toilette with a more traditional approach, meaning that
the essential oil was extracted from the roots of the plant and therefore the
scent is a bit “darker,” said executives. The new vetiver is produced at a
higher cost by extracting oil from both the roots and leaves, using the age-
old infusion technique, said Emmanuel Saujet, president and chief executive
officer of the New York-based International Cosmetics and Perfumes. His
brother, Thomas, is executive vice president.
The new fragrance was created by Olivier Creed, the owner and sixth
generation of perfumers in the family that has owned Creed for 240 years,
and, according to Saujet, Creed’s 23-year-old son, Erwin, also worked on the
formula and is expected to eventually take over ownership as the seventh
generation of family management.
Original Vetiver is an eau de parfum with top notes including ginger,
mandarin and Italian bergamot; middle notes of vetiver from Haiti, sandalwood
from Mysore and iris from Florence, and a drydown of musk and ambergris.
Price points range from $90 for a 30-ml. travel size, $178 for a 75-ml.
bottle and $198 for a 120-ml. flask.
Creed’s American distribution is extremely tight, consisting of all the
Neiman Marcus stores, Bergdorf Goodman, 17 doors of Saks Fifth Avenue and the
Holt Renfrew chain in Canada. Saujet said the company is considering opening
two freestanding Creed shops in Beverly Hills and New York.
“We kept distribution the same,” Saujet said. “We want to build this; it’s a
jewel.”
Although the distribution is extremely exclusive, the brand’s retail volume
is more than $10 million, according to estimates by industry sources.
In the spring, Saujet added, the brand will expand its offerings with a
tuberose scent called Love in White. "
