Gość: acton Re: Manchester United- Liverpool 0:1!!!!!!!! IP: *.jedwab.net.pl 23.01.02, 07:07 "The Times" WEDNESDAY JANUARY 23 2002 Murphy takes late action to halt United's title charge BY MATT DICKINSON, FOOTBALL CORRESPONDENT Manchester United 0 Liverpool 1 SIR ALEX FERGUSON described this campaign as “the mother of all title races” but what was said with relish before kick-off had, by last night, stuck in his throat. Manchester United remain as prone to choking as all their championship rivals to judge from Danny Murphy’s late and unexpected goal. Twists and turns come on a weekly basis in this gloriously chaotic season and this result was another violent lurch. After eight consecutive victories in the FA Barclaycard Premiership, Ferguson was expecting his players to lengthen their stride at the top of the table. Instead, Arsenal could close to within a point if they beat Leicester City tonight — and Arsčne Wenger’s team has a game in hand. Drawing long-term conclusions is proving a hazardous business but Liverpool will hope that, in snatching victory, they played themselves back into form. They looked like a side suffering from a severe shortage of confidence during a nervous opening but improved to the point where, for the last fifteen minutes, they were the most likely to score. Fabien Barthez had just pulled off two fine saves when he was beaten in the 85th minute by Murphy’s lob. Steven Gerrard has been in a rut of poor form but it was his pass that set up John Arne Riise’s equaliser at Arsenal recently and, last night, he chipped the ball forward to Murphy. Jeered off by his own fans on Saturday, Murphy was suddenly a hero as he lifted his shot into the goal. It was the fourth time in a row that Liverpool had beaten United in the league and a reminder that, of the eight successive victories by Ferguson’s team, all but one had come against teams in the bottom half of the Premiership. Betting against the champions retaining their title would still be rash but this result was, according to Phil Thompson, a reminder that there is still a long way to go. “I said before that we are only just past the halfway stage and no championship has been won now,” the Liverpool assistant manager said. “I wasn’t thinking about a gap developing. Manchester United will be there at the end of the season and so will we. Teams will take points off each other, but we have shown now that we are capable of beating United. “Winning at old Trafford is not the be all and end all but confidence-wise it would have damaged us if it had gone wrong tonight. We have a big Cup game at the weekend (away at Arsenal) and now we have to make sure we push on and pick up some points.” Murphy’s goal was not just a shock in the context of recent form by both teams but because this had been a poor game. Defenders had dominated, with Stephane Henchoz one of the most influential performers as he stopped Ruud van Nistelrooy from scoring in his ninth consecutive league game. United had held the majority of possession and, certainly for the first hour, it seemed easy to spot which team was top of the league and which was sinking like a stone. But United increasingly became guilty of overelaboration as Liverpool stood firm. When Gerrard was booked in the first two minutes, it was obvious that this was to be a tense and physical tussle and even Juan Sebastián Verón, who has been a peripheral figure in recent matches, acknowledged the tone of the encounter when he flattened Stephen Wright to win a 50-50 challenge. The Argentinian was lucky not to be cautioned for a reckless kick through the back of Michael Owen and was eventually booked in the second half for another late barge. United managed to control the pinball on rare occasions and Giggs, who was deployed through the middle of attack alongside Van Nistelrooy, pulled two shots wide when he would have hoped to score. Yet the longer the game went on, the more misguided was Ferguson’s decision to use Scholes on the left wing. United could not get round behind the Liverpool back four. At the other end, Liverpool found United’s defence considerably improved on the quartet that caved in at Anfield. Gary Neville twice dispossessed Owen with impressive finality and, when the England forward did have a run at goal after a sloppy pass by Scholes, he also failed to test the goalkeeper in what was becoming an increasingly fragmented game. The United supporters began to air their displeasure at the number of times that the ball was passed away from the Liverpool goal. Beckham went close with a chip from 25 yards but this was a game in which defenders were the stars with Laurent Blanc, so derided during United’s poor run, also in increasingly impressive form. So limited were the chances that Owen found himself hauled to the bench in the 77th minute, which was a surprising move by Thompson given that Emile Heskey has scored only once since England’s 5-1 victory in Germany and a volley last night almost hit the corner flag rather than the goal. When Nicolas Anelka almost scored with his first touch and Barthez had to save from Riise, the game appeared to be heading for a rare goalless draw involving United but then Murphy popped up with five minutes to go. Trochę wyżej oceniłbym Gerarda - chyba najwięcej mieszał, poza tym piękna asysta, no i potrafił czasem zastępować obrońców. Pozdr Odpowiedz Link Zgłoś
