Russians help Iran with missile threat to Europe

Former members of the Russian military have been secretly helping Iran to
acquire technology needed to produce missiles capable of striking European
capitals.

The Russians are acting as go-betweens with North Korea as part of a multi-
million pound deal they negotiated between Teheran and Pyongyang in 2003. It
has enabled Teheran to receive regular clandestine shipments of top secret
missile technology, believed to be channelled through Russia.

Western intelligence officials believe that the technology will enable Iran
to complete development of a missile with a range of 2,200 miles, capable of
hitting much of Europe. It is designed to carry a 1.2-ton payload, sufficient
for a basic nuclear device.

The revelation raises the stakes in the confrontation between Iran's Islamic
regime and the West - led by the United States and European countries
including Britain.

Condoleezza Rice, the US secretary of state, clashed with Russian officials
over Iran's nuclear programme during a visit to Moscow yesterday, saying that
Teheran must fulfil its obligations under the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty.

She was later expected to urge President Vladimir Putin to back a referral of
Iran to the United Nations Security Council.

A senior American official said Iran's programme was "sophisticated and
getting larger and more accurate. They have had very much in mind the payload
needed to carry a nuclear weapon.

"I think Putin knows what the Iranians are doing."

Iran is believed to be hiding its weapons development behind its nuclear
power programme, for which it receives Russian support, and has refused to
suspend uranium enrichment or to allow full UN inspections.

John Bolton, the US ambassador to the UN, told BBC2's Newsnight that Iran
was "determined to get nuclear weapons deliverable on ballistic missiles it
can then use to intimidate not only its own region but possibly to supply to
terrorists".

Iran's longest-range missile is the Shahab 3, which, with an 800-mile range,
could hit Israel. The North Korean deal will allow the Iranian missile to
reach targets far into Europe - including Rome, Berlin, and much of France.

North Korea has developed a missile, the Taepo Dong 2, that could reach
America's west coast, based on the submarine-launched Soviet SSN6.
Modifications allow it to be fired from a land-based transporter and this
technology is being smuggled to Teheran with Russian help.

Russians have provided production facilities, diagrams and operating
instruction so the missile can be built in Iran. Liquid propellant has been
shipped to Iran. Russian specialists have also been sent to Iran to help
development of its Shahab 5 missile project, which the Iranians hope to have
operational by the end of the decade.

Europejska bedzie szantazowana (bezwzglednie) z dwoch stron:
1) Przez ruskow grozba zakrecenia ruskiego kurka z gazem (aby miec pieniazki na
przezycie Putana bedzie sprzedawal gaz Chinczykom).
2) Przez ajatollachow rakietami "Shahab 5" (budowanymi przy pomocy ruskow) z
nuklearnymi glowicami.
Czeka nas w Europie "ciekawa" przyszlosc i to dzieki durnocie europejskich

drani (wystarczy poczytac chociazby wypowiedzi niektorych naszych
forumowiczow). Na miejscu jankesow nie robilbym nic - zgodnie z zasada "jako
Kuba Bogu, tak Bog Kubie" i "Europko" bron sie sama, na wlasny koszt, swoimi
ludzmi i za wlasne pieniazki.

Germany's business leaders are warning that the continuing exodus of young
scientists, in spite of government programs to entice them back home, is now
threatening the future of the country's biotechnology industry.

Like elsewhere in Europe, many of Germany's brightest science graduates in all
disciplines seek their fortunes abroad—but the stream flows fastest in the
life sciences. Biotechnology companies badly need these well qualified
researchers, Christoph Anz from the Confederation of German Employers';
Associations told The Scientist.

“The trouble is that we are losing our highest achievers,” Anz said. “We have
reached the point where we will no longer be able to compete in the booming
biotechnology sector.”

Every seventh person with a doctorate in science leaves Germany for the United
States. And three of the four Germans who have won a Nobel Prize are currently
working in the United States, noted Markus Albers in Die Welt am Sonntag.

“The top scientists know their own value, and they rightly insist on excellent
working conditions and an appropriate level of pay. These two together can
hardly ever be found in Germany,” said Helmut Schwarz, vice president of the
German Research Foundation, a body that promotes research at universities and
other publicly financed research institutions in Germany.

“We don't have proper career paths, people are paid according to set bands and
not according to their performance. In America, scientists can earn three
times as much,” Schwarz said. He added that money was not the only problem;
young German researchers are hampered by government regulations.

“A passion for science and a stimulating international campus atmosphere” are
also missing in Germany, he said.

However, Barbara Dufner from the German Ministry for Education and Research
told The Scientist that the government's campaign to reverse the exodus of
young researchers was bearing fruit. The government has spent 110 million
euros in the past 3 years on a “brain gain” campaign, including offering
special funds to lure back young expat researchers. Furthermore, a new
academic position of junior professor has been created in universities.

“The junior professorship goes some way to offering young researchers freedom,
flexibility, and independence,” Dufner said. Until now, postdocs in Germany
have had to do a second doctorate, called the Habilitation—lasting up to 6
years—before being able to apply for full professorships.

But Michael Madeja from the nonprofit Hertie Foundation, which has started a
special 1.2 million euro program to keep young brain researchers in Germany,
said he was doubtful that the creation of a limited number of underfunded
junior professorships would be enough to tempt young researchers to stay.

Christoph Anz also said that the government's moves were a step in the right
direction but that more action was needed.

“Sweden has shown that it is possible for a country to create attractive
conditions for researchers in spite of high taxes,” he said. “It will be a
long haul before Germany has anything like the same conditions.”
