      Elementy Euklidesa

Elementy to niewątpliwie najważniejsza książka naukowa wszechczasów. Dowodzi
dziś jeszcze swego znaczenia ani w historii nauki, ani w samej matematyce.
Przedstawiony w niej system geometrii euklidesowej obecnie jeszcze jest
przedmiotem nauki we wszystkich szkołach świata i stanowi podstawę niemal całej

elementy? Były nimi planimetria i stereometria, algebra geometryczna i
rozwiązywanie równań kwadratowych, teoria liczb, nauka o stosunkach liczb i
stosunkach wielkości, klasyfikacja niewymierności kwadratowych, metoda
      wyczerpywania.

wielotomowe Elementy matematyki, mianowicie: podać opis tych podstawowych
bezpośrednio do Euklidesa (w języku francuskim księga Euklidesa nosi tytuł Les
      elements).

Hipokrates z Chios, a następnie Leon i Theudios, należący do szkoły Platona.
zakasowały i wyparły z obiegu.

      czyniących zadość równaniu Ax+By+C = O, itd.

pomocą cyrkla i liniału. Czwarty postulat zabezpiecza jednotliwość przedłużenia
prostej. Wreszcie piąty postulat - to sławny postulat o równoległych .
      warunki.
"Piąty postulat zadziwiał uczonych swym skomplikowanym sformułowaniem. Podobny
był raczej do twierdzenia, niż do postulatu. Już w starożytności próbowano
zastąpić go innym, bardziej oczywistym stwierdzeniem. U Proklosa (V w. n.e.),

aksjomatom Eudoksosa. Czwarty aksjomat - \"przystające są sobie równe\" - jest
jedynym, w którym mowa jest o możliwości ruchu - przystawania.

Wybór postulatów i aksjomatów jest bardzo trafny. Prawie wszystkie weszły one
do nowoczesnej aksjomatyki. Postulaty i aksjomaty Elementów nie wystarczają
jednak do dedukcyjnego zbudowania geometrii. Euklides nie sformułował wielu
stwierdzeń, z których w dalszym ciągu korzysta. Nie ma w Elementach, na
przykład, postulatów stereometrycznych. Z wyjątkiem aksjomatu czwartego, nie ma
w nich także aksjomatów ruchu. Niemniej w geometrii Euklidesa bada się w
      istocie niezmiennik

Euklides NIE byl ani Arabem, ani tym bardziej muzulmaninem.

Euklides, podobnie jak Pitagoras, Tales, Archimedes byl Grekiem. G-r-e-k-i-e-m.

Aleksandria w III w. p.n.e. byla miastem greckim, zalozonym na czesc Aleksandra
Macedonskiego, zwanego Wielkim, najwiekszego wodza i przywodcy starozytnosci.
Podobnie Akademia Aleksandryjska, byla uczelnia grecka, a dzialajaca przy niej
Biblioteka Aleksandryjska zostala zniszczona i spalona spalona przez... Arabow.
To byl ich wklad naukowy, jaki wniesli do aleksandryjskich przybytkow akademickich.

Zanim cos sie przepisze bezmyslnie z portalu, na ktorym dzieci z podstawowek i

      • exxon EUKLIDES BYL GREKIEM!!! 18.11.05, 18:07
Nie mial nic wspolnego z Arabami, ktorych zreszta wtedy w ogole tam nie bylo -
siedzieli na Polwyspie Arabskim. Aleksandria to bylo jedno z najpotezniejszych
greckich miast - zalozone przez Aleksandra Wielkiego.

        Za encyklopedia PWN:
        EUKLIDES (IV/III w. p.n.e.), matematyk gr., działający w Aleksandrii; w dziele
Stoicheia geometrias [‘elementy geometrii’], składającym się z 13 ksiąg,
        usystematyzował całość ówczesnej wiedzy mat. w postaci aksjomatycznego wykładu;
        dzieło to, tzw. Elementy, wywarło olbrzymi wpływ na dalszy rozwój matematyki;
divisionibus, z optyki Catoptrica i Optica (prawo odbicia światła, zasada
prostoliniowego rozchodzenia się promieni świetlnych), z astronomii Phaenomena

Western writers have often used the word Arabs or Muhammadans for Muslims and
Arabic civilization for Islamic Civilization. In other instances, the words
Saracen(ic) and Moor(ish) are also used for Muslims (Arabs and non-Arabs) from
various parts of Europe, Africa, Arabia and Asia. According to a tradition of
the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) anyone whose primary language is Arabic is an Arab
despite his ethnic origin, place of birth, or national origin. Arabic was the
medium of communication throughout the Muslim world until a couple of centuries
ago, regardless of the type of activity whether religious, social or
scientific. During 800-1500 C.E. essentially all scientific works were written
in Arabic. It is only after colonization of Muslim lands that this practice
became less prevalent and in many instances was eliminated.

George Sarton's Tribute to Muslim Scientists in the "Introduction to the
              History of Science," I

"It will suffice here to evoke a few glorious names without contemporary
equivalents in the West: Jabir ibn Haiyan, al-Kindi, al-Khwarizmi, al-Fargani,
al-Razi, Thabit ibn Qurra, al-Battani, Hunain ibn Ishaq, al-Farabi, Ibrahim ibn
Sinan, al-Masudi, al-Tabari, Abul Wafa, 'Ali ibn Abbas, Abul Qasim, Ibn al-
Jazzar, al-Biruni, Ibn Sina, Ibn Yunus, al-Kashi, Ibn al-Haitham, 'Ali Ibn 'Isa
al-Ghazali, al-zarqab, Omar Khayyam. A magnificent array of names which it
would not be difficult to extend. If anyone tells you that the Middle Ages were
scientifically sterile, just quote these men to him, all of whom flourished
              within a short period, 750 to 1100 A.D."

John William Draper in the "Intellectual Development of Europe"

"I have to deplore the systematic manner in which the literature of Europe has
continued to put out of sight our obligations to the Muhammadans. Surely they
cannot be much longer hidden. Injustice founded on religious rancour and
national conceit cannot be perpetuated forever. The Arab has left his
intellectual impress on Europe. He has indelibly written it on the heavens as
any one may see who reads the names of the stars on a common celestial globe."

Robert Briffault in the "Making of Humanity"

"It was under the influence of the arabs and Moorish revival of culture and not
in the 15th century, that a real renaissance took place. Spain, not Italy, was
the cradle of the rebirth of Europe. After steadily sinking lower and lower
into barbarism, it had reached the darkest depths of ignorance and degradation
when cities of the Saracenic world, Baghdad, Cairo, Cordova, and Toledo, were
growing centers of civilization and intellectual activity. It was there that
the new life arose which was to grow into new phase of human evolution. From
the time when the influence of their culture made itself felt, began the
              stirring of new life.
"It was under their successors at Oxford School (that is, successors to the
Muslims of Spain) that Roger Bacon learned Arabic and Arabic Sciences. Neither
Roger Bacon nor later namesake has any title to be credited with having
introduced the experimental method. Roger Bacon was no more than one of
apostles of Muslim Science and Method to Christian Europe; and he never wearied
of declaring that knowledge of Arabic and Arabic Sciences was for his
contemporaries the only way to true knowledge. Discussion as to who was the
originator of the experimental method....are part of the colossal
misinterpretation of the origins of European civilization. The experimental
method of Arabs was by Bacon's time widespread and eagerly cultivated
              throughout Europe.

"Science is the most momentous contribution of Arab civilization to the modern
world; but its fruits were slow in ripening. Not until long after Moorish
culture had sunk back into darkness did the giant, which it had given birth to,
rise in his might. It was not science only which brought Europe back to life.
Other and manifold influence from the civilization of Islam communicated its
              first glow to European Life.

"For Although there is not a single aspect of European growth in which the
decisive influence of Islamic Culture is not traceable, nowhere is it so clear
and momentous as in the genesis of that power which constitutes the permanent
distinctive force of the modern world, and the supreme source of its victory,
natural science and the scientific spirit.

"The debt of our science to that of the Arabs does not consist in startling
discoveries or revolutionary theories, science owes a great deal more to Arab
culture, it owes its existence. The Astronomy and Mathematics of the Greeks
were a foreign importation never thoroughly acclimatized in Greek culture. The
Greeks systematized, generalized and theorized, but the patient ways of
investigation, the accumulation of positive knowledge, the minute method of
science, detailed and prolonged observation and experimental inquiry were
altogether alien to the Greek temperament. Only in Hellenistic Alexandria was
any approach to scientific work conducted in the ancient classical world. What
we call science arose in Europe as a result of new spirit of enquiry, of new
methods of experiment, observation, measurement, of the development of
mathematics, in a form unknown to the Greeks. That spirit and those methods
were introduced into the European world by the Arabs.

"It is highly probable that but for the Arabs, modern European civilization
would never have arisen at all; it is absolutely certain that but for them, it
would not have assumed that character which has enabled it to transcend all
              previous phases of evolution."

Arnold and Guillaume in "Lagacy of Islam" on Islamic science and medicine

"Looking back we may say that Islamic medicine and science reflected the light
of the Hellenic sun, when its day had fled, and that they shone like a moon,
illuminating the darkest night of the European middle Ages; that some bright
stars lent their own light, and that moon and stars alike faded at the dawn of
a new day - the Renaissance. Since they had their share in the direction and
introduction of that great movement, it may reasonably be claimed that they are
              with us yet."

George Sarton in the "Introduction to the History of Science"

"During the reign of Caliph Al-Mamun (813-33 A.D.), the new learning reached
its climax. The monarch created in Baghdad a regular school for translation. It
was equipped with a library, one of the translators there was Hunayn Ibn Ishaq
(809-77) a particularly gifted philosopher and physician of wide erudition, the
dominating figure of this century of translators. We know from his own recently
published Memoir that he translated practically the whole immense corpus of
              Galenic writings."
"Besides the translation of Greek works and their extracts, the translators
made manuals of which one form, that of the 'pandects,' is typical of the
period of Arabic learning. These are recapitulations of the whole medicine,
discussing the affections of the body, systematically beginning at the head and
              working down to the feet."

"The Muslim ideal was, it goes without saying, not visual beauty but God in His
plentitude; that is God with all his manifestations, the stars and the heavens,
the earth and all nature. The Muslim ideal is thus infinite. But in dealing
with the infinite as conceived by the Muslims, we cannot limit ourselves to the
space alone, but must equally consider time.

"The first mathematical step from the Greek conception of a static universe to
the Islamic one of a dynamic universe was made by Al-Khwarizmi (780-850), the
founder of modern Algebra. He enhanced the purely arithmetical character of
numbers as finite magnitudes by demonstrating their possibilities as elements
              of infinite man

              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Recent research paints a new picture of the debt that we owe to Arabic/Islamic
mathematics. Certainly many of the ideas which were previously thought to have
been brilliant new conceptions due to European mathematicians of the sixteenth,
seventeenth and eighteenth centuries are now known to have been developed by
Arabic/Islamic mathematicians around four centuries earlier. In many respects
the mathematics studied today is far closer in style to that of the
Arabic/Islamic contribution than to that of the Greeks.

There is a widely held view that, after a brilliant period for mathematics when
the Greeks laid the foundations for modern mathematics, there was a period of
stagnation before the Europeans took over where the Greeks left off at the
beginning of the sixteenth century. The common perception of the period of 1000
years or so between the ancient Greeks and the European Renaissance is that
little happened in the world of mathematics except that some Arabic
translations of Greek texts were made which preserved the Greek learning so
that it was available to the Europeans at the beginning of the sixteenth
              century.

That such views should be generally held is of no surprise. Many leading
historians of mathematics have contributed to the perception by either omitting
any mention of Arabic/Islamic mathematics in the historical development of the
subject or with statements such as that made by Duhem in [3]:-

... Arabic science only reproduced the teachings received from Greek science.

Before we proceed it is worth trying to define the period that this article
covers and give an overall description to cover the mathematicians who
contributed. The period we cover is easy to describe: it stretches from the end
of the eighth century to about the middle of the fifteenth century. Giving a
description to cover the mathematicians who contributed, however, is much
harder. The works [6] and [17] are on "Islamic mathematics", similar to [1]
which uses the title the "Muslim contribution to mathematics". Other authors
try the description "Arabic mathematics", see for example [10] and [11].
              However, certainly not all the mathematicians we wish to include were Muslims;
some were Jews, some Christians, some of other faiths. Nor were all these
mathematicians Arabs, but for convenience we will call our topic "Arab
              mathematics".

The regions from which the "Arab mathematicians" came was centred on Iran/Iraq
but varied with military conquest during the period. At its greatest extent it
stretched to the west through Turkey and North Africa to include most of Spain,
and to the east as far as the borders of China.

The background to the mathematical developments which began in Baghdad around
800 is not well understood. Certainly there was an important influence which
came from the Hindu mathematicians whose earlier development of the decimal
system and numerals was important. There began a remarkable period of
mathematical progress with al-Khwarizmi's work and the translations of Greek
              texts.

This period begins under the Caliph Harun al-Rashid, the fifth Caliph of the
Abbasid dynasty, whose reign began in 786. He encouraged scholarship and the
first translations of Greek texts into Arabic, such as Euclid's Elements by al-
Hajjaj, were made during al-Rashid's reign. The next Caliph, al-Ma'mun,
encouraged learning even more strongly than his father al-Rashid, and he set up
the House of Wisdom in Baghdad which became the centre for both the work of
translating and of of research. Al-Kindi (born 801) and the three Banu Musa
brothers worked there, as did the famous translator Hunayn ibn Ishaq.

We should emphasise that the translations into Arabic at this time were made by
scientists and mathematicians such as those named above, not by language
experts ignorant of mathematics, and the need for the translations was
stimulated by the most advanced research of the time. It is important to
realise that the translating was not done for its own sake, but was done as
part of the current research effort. The most important Greek mathematical
texts which were translated are listed in [17]:-

Of Euclid's works, the Elements, the Data, the Optics, the Phaenomena, and On
Divisions were translated. Of Archimedes' works only two - Sphere and Cylinder
and Measurement of the Circle - are known to have been translated, but these
were sufficient to stimulate independent researches from the 9th to the 15th
century. On the other hand, virtually all of Apollonius's works were
translated, and of Diophantus and Menelaus one book each, the Arithmetica and
the Sphaerica, respectively, were translated into Arabic. Finally, the
translation of Ptolemy's Almagest furnished important astronomical material.

The more minor Greek mathematical texts which were translated are also given in
              [17]:-

... Diocles' treatise on mirrors, Theodosius's Spherics, Pappus's work on
mechanics, Ptolemy's Planisphaerium, and Hypsicles' treatises on regular
polyhedra (the so-called Books XIV and XV of Euclid's Elements) ...

Perhaps one of the most significant advances made by Arabic mathematics began
at this time with the work of al-Khwarizmi, namely the beginnings of algebra.
It is important to understand just how significant this new idea was. It was a
revolutionary move away from the Greek concept of mathematics which was
              essentially geometry.

Algebra was a unifying theory which allowed rational numbers, irrational
numbers, geometrical magnitudes, etc., to all be treated as "algebraic
objects". It gave mathematics a whole new development path so much broader in
concept to that which had existed before, and provided a vehicle for future
development of the subject. Another important aspect of the introduction of
algebraic ideas was that it allowed mathematics to be applied to itself in a
way which had not happened before. As Rashed writes in [11] (see also [10]):-

Al-Khwarizmi's successors undertook a systematic application of arithmetic to
algebra, algebra to arithmetic, both to trigonometry, algebra to the Euclidean
theory of numbers, algebra to geometry, and geometry to algebra. This was how
the creation of polynomial algebra, combinatorial analysis, numerical analysis,
the numerical solution of equations, the new elementary theory of numbers, and
the geometric construction of equations arose.

Let us follow the development of algebra for a moment and look at al-
Khwarizmi's successors. About forty years after al-Khwarizmi is the work of al-
Mahani (born 820), who conceived the idea of reducing geometrical problems such
as duplicating the cube to problems in algebra. Abu Kamil (born 850) forms an
important link in the development of algebra between al-Khwarizmi and al-
Karaji. Despite not using symbols, but writing powers of x in words, he had
begun to understand what we would write in symbols as xn.xm = xm+n. Let us
remark that symbols did not appear in Arabic mathematics until much later. Ibn
al-Banna and al-Qalasadi used symbols in the 15th century and, although we do
not know exactly when their use began, we know that symbols were used at least
              a century before this.

Al-Karaji (born 953) is seen by many as the first person to completely free
algebra from geometrical operations and to replace them with the arithmetical
type of operations which are at the core of algebra today. He was first to
              define the monomials x, x2, x3, ... and 1/x, 1/x2, 1/x3, ... and to give rules
for products of any two of these.

      i jeszcze lepszy:
"Biblioteki muzułmańskie posiadały specjalne gmachy względnie pomieszczenia z
katalogami, w których książki ułożone były według działów. Tomy nie były

honorowe miejsce. Biblioteki były otwarte i dostępne dla każdego bezpłatnie.
Papier, atrament i pióra również dostarczano bez opłat. Niektóre biblioteki

A brief on the ancient library of Alexandria

The Ancient Library of Alexandria was established by Ptolemy I (Soter) in the
year 288 B.C. It was intended as a meeting place of the most eminent minds of
the time who would gather in the temple of the muses or the Museum. This was
the first research center in the world. It was a sort of scholarly academy
attracting prominent scientists and intellectuals, with a library annexed to
it. Several buildings were involved of which the most famous were the museum,
and the library by the waterfront (both in the royal district called the
Brucheion) and the daughter Library in the Temple of Serapis (the Serapeum).

The Library expanded to include all the knowledge in the ancient world. The
library at its zenith may have had over 700,000 scrolls, and attracted men of
letters, intellectuals, scientists and scholars, inter alia:

-Aristarchus, the first to proclaim that the earth revolves around the sun.

-Hipparchus, the first to measure the solar year with six and a half minutes
accuracy. -Eratosthenes, the first to measure the circumference of the earth.

-Euclid, who wrote the elements of geometry.

-Archimedes, the greatest mathematician of the Ancient World.

-Callimachus, a poet, and the first to write a catalogue for books classified
by topic and author, thereby becoming the father of Library Science.

The Ancient Library of Alexandria was open to all civilizations. Systematic
efforts were made to collect the best works from all over the world, and any
ships that docked in Alexandria were searched, and any books on board were
copied. Scholars from all over the world were invited to come. The Old
Testament was translated for the first time from Hebrew to Greek.

Thus, the Ancient Library of Alexandria in its first centuries was a mixture of
all civilizations, and languages, however the Greek language was most dominant
(as English is today). No doubt, the role of Greek thought and philosophy was
remarkable in formulating the Hellenistic civilization, for which Alexandria
with its great Library was the intellectual capital.

The genius of the Hellenistic Culture was to combine the glory of Ancient Greek
(Hellenic) cultures with Egyptian and Asian cultures. It was an enriching
result. To the question: Was Alexandrian culture and scholarship Greek or
Egyptian? The answer is both. Both peoples should be proud of it.

The Library was not destroyed by the invading Arabs as some stories would have
us believe. It was destroyed much earlier, through a long decline punctuated
with fires and destruction over four and a half centuries. The first fire came
about during the Alexandrian War, when Julius Caesar burnt the Egyptian fleet
in 48 B.C. and the fire inadvertently spread to the library buildings near the
docks. During the upheavals of the Roman Empire in the third century of our
era, Alexandria suffered many upheavals and suppressions which led to the city
being invaded by roman armies several times and the whole royal district where
the old Library and Museum were located was destroyed. Alexandrian scholarships
moved to the daughter library in the temple of Serapis (the Serapeum) in the
southwest corner of the city. That too succumbed to destruction in a wave of
anti-pagan actions and the rest of the Library was burnt in the Serapeum in 391
A.D. Hypathia (the Mathematician) and the daughter of the Library's last
recorded scholar was brutally murdered by the mob in 415 AD bringing a final
stop to the seven centuries of Alexandrian scholarship. That was 230 years
before Arnr Ibn El Aas entered Egypt at the head of the first Arab Muslim army.

Though 1600 years have elapsed since the age of the Ancient Library of
Alexandria came to an end, all scholars and scientists still acknowledge their
debt to that remarkable institution and look with admiration on the role played
by the Ancient Library as a center for dialogue and tolerance as well as
                                        science and learning.

A brief history of Alexandria across the ages

Alexandria was built in the shape of a chessboard. It was divided into five
districts, the most important was the Royal District, which holds the Museum,
the Great Library of Alexandria, the lighthouse and the Sema, which is the
funerary temple where Alexander the Great was buried.

Dar El Hekma, and the library were centers spreading culture to the Hellenistic
world. They were also a meeting point for scientists, great philosophers and
men of letters from various countries. Among Alexandria's scientists we find
Hermophilus, the great surgeon and Hipparchus considered father of astronomy,
and Archimedes of Syracuse the physicst and others. The fame of Alexandria's
Library surpassed that of Dar El Hekma as it contained about 700 thousand
                                        biblia.

It was the first public library owned by the state in the ancient world. We can
definitely state that Alexandria was the center of science, literature and art
in the Hellenistic world during the three centuries of the Ptolomaic rule.

This page of history was folded when the Ptolomaic state ended at the hands of
Emperor Augustus, following the battle of Actium in 30 BC, when Alexandria
became the headquarters of the Roman Prefect until the Arab conquest in the 7th
century AD. Alexandrians role did not stop at revolutions and sarcasm, they had
a vital role in supporting rebels and those who wanted to defy the Emperor.
They helped Vaspasion to reach the throne in 69 AD. Failure of the rebels led
the Roman emperors to avenge themselves on the Alexandrians, an example is what
happened during the rule of Marcus Orerllius (161 -180) and Sipherios (193 -
                                        2110).

Greek influence prevailed during the Roman rule. Greek was the official
language of Egypt. From the religious perspective the Alexandrian triad made up
of Serapis, Isis and Harpocratis deified by the ptolemies remained the most
prominent among the Gods during the Roman era.

Christianity spread in Egypt at this period and Copts, experienced religious
persecutions which were at their worse during the rule of Diocletion, which was
referred to as The Age of Martyrs.

Canope bath water cisterns, Roman cemeteries, El Anfoushi cemetery, Koum El
                                        Shogafa.

In the second half of the 7th century following the Arab conquest of Egypt,
when the country was beginning a new era, Alexandria was no longer the capital
of the country due to the foundation of Fostat. Accordingly, Alexandria lost
its old importance as it broke off from the Roman World.

It also retained its commercial prominence because of its outstanding location
that made it the most substantial trade point between the east and the west.
The number of mansions, palaces, mosques, schools, famous shrines increased,
Alexandria, persisted as the core of knowledge, culture and the sciences
through her scholars and scientists who came from the east and the west.

During the period of independence as from the Abassid State, the Tulunid State
                                        (254 -282 HD -868 -905 AD), the Akshid State (323 -357 ~D I 995 -968 AD),
Fatimid State (358 -567 HDI 969 - 1172 AD), Egypt managed to formulate its own
independent identity which reached its peak during the Fatimid period.
