Joy echoes at discovery that Jenolan Caves are world's oldest
      Deborah Smith - Science Editor
      July 26, 2006

THE Jenolan Caves in the Blue Mountains have been dated at 340
million years old, making them the oldest known open caves in the
      world.

In a five-year study, a team of Australian scientists tested clay
from caves regularly visited by tourists, such as the Orient Cave
and Temple of Baal Cave, to determine their ancient origins.

Team member, ArmstrongOsborne, of the University of Sydney, said it
had been thought for many years that the limestone caves were only a
      few thousand years old.

Then, about six years ago, geologists estimated they could have
formed as long as 100 million years ago.

The new finding was a shock.

"The dates we got are much older than anticipated. It is quite
      dramatic," Dr Osborne said.

The second oldest known open cave is in the Guadelupe Mountains in
New Mexico, US, which is 65 million years old. Most other famous
caves, such as Postojna Cave in Slovenia, are thought to be only
about 5 million years old, he said.

For the study, CSIRO scientists, led by Dr Horst Zwingmann, used a
method they had developed to help oil exploration companies find oil
deposits. By testing minerals in mud samples from the floors of the
caves at Jenolan, they were able to show that the clay had formed in
the distant past from ash blown in from a nearby volcano.

Dr Osborne said 340 million years was a long time, even in
geological terms. "To put it in context, the Blue Mountains began to
form 100 million years ago; dinosaurs became extinct 65 million
years ago and Tasmania was joined to the mainland as recently as
      10,000 years ago."

He said the discovery, published in the Australian Journal of Earth
Sciences, could assist in a push for Jenolan Caves to gain world
heritage listing in their own right, not just as part of the Blue
      Mountains listing.

"They deserve it. They are one of the world's most complicated cave
      systems," he said.

Most ancient caves around the world have filled up with rock, and
are no longer accessible, Dr Osborne said.

    • luiza-w-ogrodzie Australia - the largest intact wilderness on Earth 07.01.09, 01:32

Pozna wiosna i latem (listopad-luty) oglada sie Sydney, Melbourne i Tasmanie.
Zima (czerwiec - sierpien) nurkuje sie na rafie, jezdzi na nartach, zwiedza centrum Australii.
Pora deszczowa i cyklony (listopad-marzec) wykluczaja tropikalna polnoc ze zwiedzania.

A STUDY has identified 40 per cent of Australia - 3 million square kilometres - as the largest intact wilderness on Earth, ranking in quality with the Amazon forest, Antarctica and the Sahara desert

"Few Australians realise the extent and quality of their own wilderness," said Barry Traill, a wildlife ecologist who co-authored the study identifying 12 regions of Australia that "remain almost completely untouched by humans".

"As the world's last great wilderness areas disappear under pressure from human impact, to have a continent with this much remaining wilderness intact is unusual and globally significant," Dr Traill said.

The study, which will be made public today, was conducted by international conservation organisations the Pew Environment Group and The Nature Conservancy, which joined forces to scan the world for the last great wilderness areas.

The organisations are spending $12 million over three years to help Australian organisations improve protection of the areas, which range from the treeless plains of the Nullarbor to northern Australia's savannahs to lush rain forests on Cape York Peninsula.

They want at least 5000 Aboriginal rangers employed full time to manage and care for the land.

The Wild Australia Program Study found that while Australia's wilderness areas support some of the world's richest concentration of flora and fauna, they face serious threats, including feral animals, such as pigs and buffaloes, and invasive noxious weeds.

Dr Traill, in Queensland, cites the work of Djelk indigenous rangers in the Northern Territory community of Maningrida as an example of how to preserve areas the way they existed for centuries.

A group of the rangers took the Herald to a vast flood plain where each dry season they cut and burn the noxious mimosa weed that was brought to Australia from South America. The weed would cause enormous environmental damage if allowed to spread.

Dr Traill said that over 50,000 years Aboriginal people had managed the land in a sustainable way. "If the land is left empty, it will degrade over time. That's why one of our focuses is to encourage the employment of indigenous rangers."

Most of Australia's 700 indigenous rangers are employed under a work-for-the-dole scheme that the Government is reviewing.

"We believe these should be full-time jobs, with the rangers having increased resources like four-wheel-drive vehicles and where necessary, helicopters … 700 is just not enough for these vast areas," he said.

Twenty-four per cent of Australia is indigenous freehold land.

The study found that Australia has the highest number of endemic mammal and reptile species in the world but also the worst rate of species extinction.

"By marrying overseas resources with local expertise, we aim to make a big difference in looking after our outback," Dr Traill said.

Areas identified in the study include the Kimberley, Carpentaria, Cape York, Arnhem Land, Gibson Desert, Simpson Desert, Sturt Stony Desert, Nullarbor, Great Victoria Desert, the Great Sandy Desert, and the Tanami Desert.
