Zalaczam komentarze kanadyjczykow.
W wiekszosci sa pozytywne. Przeciwne temu co sie stalo.
Malo kto moze uwierzyc, ze 4 zdrowych "bykow" nie moglo poradzic sobie z
zdezorinetowanym i sfrustrowanym Polakiem.

Soundoff: Should police use tasers?
Published: Wednesday, November 14, 2007

Police say tasers save lives because they save officers from resorting to
deadly force. Others say tasers are dangerous and should be banned.

What do you think?

How sad....I'd rather be shot in the leg or arm with a bullet than go through
being shot with electicity. The public needs to make a stand and get the
tasers banned. For the RCMP to say no more tasers, would be admitting that
they kill and that they are liable.

Another fine RCMP blunder, from what I could see there was no attempt at
verbal (obviously could not), and non-verbal communication to try calm an
agitated and distressed man who posed no threat. its nice to see these are
supposed to security proffessionals at there height of ignorance, poor guy is
there to pick up his mom and ends up dead. couldnt possiblty imagine what
these cowboys act like in a real emergency.

all our police and all of us canadians for not speaking up on this matter
before and as for the airport administration for not helping the poor man, at
this i am very sad and appalled david camp delta bc

The issue of using tasers in a dangerous situation is a topic unto itself. In
this instance it is clear that the actions of the RCMP were highly
inappropriate and aggressive. Furthermore, Vancouver International Airport
security and immigration need to get it "right" in dealing with immigrants and
foreign visitors to Canada. Shame on Canada and the RCMP , and Vancouver, BC.

It is quit obvious that until the complete story is released there will be
speculation and second-guessing about the actions taken by the police
officers. Upon reading the different stories in the news it is appalling that
reporters are stating conclusions without having the complete story. Ian
Mulgrew severally criticizes the police's actions, even comparing their
actions to those in the Rodney King beating. Mulgrew states many conclusions
yet he does not know the complete details of the incident. He states that the
sound on the video is poor and then contradicts himself by saying that it
sounds like the deceased was pleading. Lets wait for the investigation and the
coroner's inquiry to be completed before we start to point fingers. It's
obvious that Mulgrew has never been placed in such a situation, as the police
were that day and which police face on a daily basis. Tasers have
significantly help police to subdue aggressive suspects, thus increasing the
safety of the officers. Tasers have been proven safe. When a death occurs
during the use of a taser a contributing factor is usually present, so once
again lets wait for the investigation to be complete before making judgment.

After seeing the polish man collapsed and struggled, my tears fell, so I
strongly agree that the tasers should be banned becacause it will be 2010
soon, the winter olympic, and the athletes will come here for compete, but the
way i see it , nobody gets to comptete unless they speak English at the
airport, or they get tesered just because they don't speak English?? I don't
about rest of you, but when I came to canada, it was very friendly, but now
the person who doesn't speak English at the airport, or anywhere, that person
gets tesered?? Ok then, I'd better learn French,or I'd get tesered... I wish
that the polish man could forgive RCMP police officals who attacked, and may
him rest in peace... He will be in my prayer always...

The taser was the weapon of choice in this case, but I have to seriously
question the root cause of the event: officer training and selection. Namely
why didn't the officers stop to speak with airport security prior to
approaching Robert to get a full understanding of the situation? why not spend
more than 20 seconds to establish communication? why did they behave like the
aggressors? On the video they look like arrogant, ignorant cowboys. nice work
RCMP. and.. wait for the investigation before making a judgment? what a joke,
the RCMP investigates themselves so I know what their investigation will find.
The video shows everything.

I always though a tazer was for use instead of a gun, hence less than lethal
force. Its seems as of late the police are using it in situations where it is
CLEARLY not warranted. Of all the tazer videos on the net i have seen as of
late not once did I say to myself "that was a situation where a gun was
warranted" I cant see cops before the tazers pulling out handguns to solve
riots that's what pepper spray and some maybe some brute force was to be used.
I think because of the quick and easy results the tazers bring law enforcement
may be to trigger happy with it to solve the problem when perhaps more common
sense would have come in handy and this poor man would still be alive today.

know when it is appropriate to use a taser. This shows a student who is pinned
down by several officers and then tasered, luckily for everyone involved he

It is very disapointing the very one-sided media coverage on this event, and
as usual, the mostly un-informed, misguided, and anti-police backlash that
follows any unfortunate outcome in a use of force encounter. What the public
does not realize or wholly appreciates is that an officer has to make life or
death choices on a split second decision every day, and then live with the
second guessing that follows, in situations that the general public never want
to be in in the first place. In this brief video, clearly this is a highly
agitated, unstable, unpredictable, combative individual. Whether people like
it or not, the reality of life is that sometimes force is required for the
safety of the individual, officers and the public to bring a resolution to a
situation, and I can guarantee you that none of those officers there wished to
be hit by a table or chair that the male had in his hands. Before you so
clearly state your opionion, which you are entitled to, why don't you stop and

How did it get to the point that this poor disoriented or unstable man was in an
airport for hours without intervention? In the video he is clearly unstable and
disoriented but not threatening and has no weapon. He might be guilty of some
minor property damage at worst. Why do four physically fit RCMP officers have to
taser one man repeatedly when he could be cuffed and taken away? We need some
really serious answers here from the airport and the police.

For some reason the RCMP seem to believe that they can use whatever force they
deem necessary, and do whatever they see fit when dealing with members of the
general public. Being a police officer is a privlage and it is not a licsense to
do whatever whenever without regard for another humans well being. I have seen
it time and time again, police officers acting like they are above the law, and
treating the public without any respect. Shame on the RCMP. Maybe it should take
more than a few months training before we let these ego maniacs loose on the
streets. In saying this I realise that there are good officers out there, and I
respect the job that these people do. But more and more you are hearing about
police using excess force and generaly acting like they are untouchable, and
this whole idea of police investigating and disciplining themselves, is
ridiculous and needs to stop immediatly.

Why aren't the names of the 4 RCMP officers involved in this incident named? As
well, all 4 RCMP officers should be charged with homicide, which is a criminal
offense.I question the training these 4 RCMP cops had previous to this
incident.Nonetheless, they should all be charged with homicide and be dismissed
as RCMP officers. They all acted as bullies, thugs. If the 4 RCMP cops cannot be
named becaise of the law, well then, our laws should be changed to enable the
public to identify rogue RCMP officers.I smell a cover-up from the RCMP re:this
incident.I don't believe a word the RCMP says. The RCMP lie through their teeth
      to justify their actions.

What a sad state the world is in when our 'highly trained' police force acts
like a scared cowardly violent gang of homicidal thugs against a confused and
distraught man who only needs help. He was not aggressive towards those officers
in the slightest, and was co-operative, yet their first response was attack. The
taser is proven again to be much more lethal than a gun, yet it is carried and
utilized so carelessly. I hope those officers are tried to the fullest extent of
the law for their murder of this poor innocent person. I'm sick of internal
police coverups of their blatent misconduct. If it were not for the public
insistence to make this video public, this incident would have been buried by
the police to protect their own yet again I have no doubt. I for one am carrying
my cel phone camera with me everywhere. It's time for the public to hold our
public servants accountable for their actions. What an international
embarrassment, and tragedy. I used to be proud of this country my family has
called home for many generations... What a sorry joke it has become.

I think it is painfully obvious Tasers are not a Non Lethal weapon. Since they
kill they must be a Lethal weapon. Therefore, the only time they should be used
is when officers lives are under direct threat, and any discharge must be
accounted for. The airport assault and murder of an unarmed out numbered 3 to 1,
by professionally trained officers, and they chose to kill him. He was scared
and confused, and had one person approached him calmly and gave him a hug, all
      of this doesn't happen, INEXCUSABLE.

I just don't see why the RCMP had to use the taser here. The most ridiculous
thing is the RCMP not just triggered the taser once but twice until the guy
completely collapsed. There will be no more crimes if the RCMP can do the same
      on the criminals.

suspended until after the investigation is complete. As far as I,m concerned

Unbelievable that the police cannot take responsibility for their own
actions--which were criminal. To add insult to injury, we now have the same
police department investigating this incident. Does this seem right to anyone?
Also, the Vancouver Airport staff need to take some responsibility here as well.
How could this poor man have been so badly taken care of in an international
airport? Weren't there any translators available? One more thought . . . would
this have happened if he were wearing a suit . . . or if he was a woman . . .

I suggest you read about excited delirium - this poor fellow would have likely
died regardless of whether he was Tasered or not. Most of the respondents thus
far seem to have very little regard for police, and even less for the work they
do. This man was breaking the law, and was exhibiting combative behaviour - he
was clearly not holding his hands up and surrendering. Yes, it is tragic that a
man lost his life. But that loss did not result from excessive force. In my view
the response was measured and appropriate in the circumstances.

      Wed, Nov 14, 07 at 11:25 PM
Give me a break. Did you actually expect the officers to stand back and let this
upset man destroy property and possibly injure someone? The intent of the taser
is to temporarily stun someone so that they can be apprehended without having to
resort to more extreme physical measures. Would you prefer the officers use
batons and beat him. How about the four officers just pile on him like a rugby
match and all of them, including the subject end up injured. There was no intent
to kill this man. It was an unfortunate and tragic result when this non-lethal
attempt to bring a violent incident to a quick conclusion. Nobody, including
these four officers, wanted this man to get injured, let alone die.

      Wed, Nov 14, 07 at 11:27 PM
The issue here is not just the taser. The police in BC seem to be out of
control. The mountie who shot that guy in the head in Houston. The RCMP officers
in the Fraser Valley who went drinking and driving and bet up three people etc.
Now this. We don't need the RCMP investigating themselves. Since the death on
Oct 14th the RCMP has been waging a misinformation campaign about what happened.
They seized the video and tried to prevent it's release. I don't trust the RCMP
at all...they are all party to this misfeasance.

Perhaps everybody that thinks the RCMP are wrong should stand in their place and
see what they would do when in that same kind of situation. An RCMP member (or
any police) can get shot to death in their police vehicle driving up to an

everybody to say what should have happened and that it was handled wrong, that
the RCMP should have done differently. What would all of those same people, who

If there had been communication with this Polish man this would not have
happened. I find it hard to believe that an airport that considerates itself
international has not got access to people with language skills. He was carrying
a passport, so they knew he was Polish and there are many Polish people in this
city. We live along the Pacific but we have many Eastern European people in this
province. Can you imagine the fear for this man who lived in a communist country

The video clearly shows lack of training and experience on the part of the
officers. After spending some years as a correctional officer, we were trained
on how to restrain a hostile individual without tasers on a daily basis. Why did
the officers not use the same training? Why was the use of force continuum
carelessly skipped over? Most law enforcement agencies use the conitnuum to
defuse the level of aggression to prevent injury/death of the INDIVIDUAL. It
takes time. What was the hurry? Why wasn't he talk down or redirected somewhere?
What was wrong with the security guard just standing there looking at him?
Doesn't he get paid? As well, where were the attempts to save the gentlemen's
life? No CPR was attempted, first aid, or other assistance from anybody! Why was
he still restrained while inconscious? THEY DO NOT NEED TASERS! They all need
proper retraining in use of force and I hope they are all suspended without pay???

While this man's situation is sad, the police had no part in putting him in that
agitated state. But of course they were called in to control him. It is somewhat
sanctimonious of those who blame the police for this man's death when they
themselves have never had to put themselves at risk at the hands of one who is
acting bizarre. Only an idiot would suggest that the police should have tried to
overpower him without trying to subdue him first in a manner which would
normally have protected both the subject and themselves.

Am I the only one who actually watched the video? You can clearly see that the
suspect had nothing in his hands when police were talking to him at the door and
when he put his hands up. Then the suspect walks over to the desk and picks up a
weapon (stapler). The suspect puts the stapler into his right hand and becomes
more aggresive. Look at his body language. The officer on the right actually
dashes out of the way when the stapler is picked up. The suspect went from
passive to aggresive. The supect was tasered and you can now see the stapler in
his right hand as he hits himself on the head. CTV was advised of this and
refused to give that side of the story.I hope global will give the whole story.

I am suprized that the police haters posting on here aren't celebrating the
murders of the two RCMP officers in the north in the last month. They would be
the same people crying for help if they ran into a crazy or dangerous person.
Officers are damned if they do and damned if they don't do anything. As the old

Tasers don't kill people. I don't know how much clearer this can be.
Historically all those who have died after being subjected to a Taser have had
some kind of underlying urgent medical condition. Sad and unfortunate, but
perhaps if the fellow hadn't been smashing chairs and raging from the moment
Security arrived, and behaving aggressively towards the Mounties, he wouldn't
      have been Tased.

I'm a Police officer, not with the RCMP. You'll find out later, very unseasoned
and more likely fairly new RCMP members. The red headed one still is learning
how to collapse his extended baton, you can see that at the end of the video.
These officers are suffering from tunnel vison. Very sad... the RCMP training
created this mess... they need to be out of urban policing, Regina is not set up
for this. Thank god for this video, or it would have been brushed off like

WOW...did every one else see the same video as me? The man was throwing things
at the window, acting erratically, breathing heavy, sweating profusely...all
signs of phsycotic behaviour or someone who is high on drugs. Did you hear the
peoples comments in the backgroung? They were saying call the police because
they didnt know what the heck he was doing but knew that he appeared
threatening. How were the police to know that he wasnt going to come at them or
an innocent bystander? They also didnt know that tasering him to subdue him
would kill him...if that was there intent they would have shot him. The
gentleman filming even said "why is he still struggling with them"...in other
words they had to hold him down to further subdue him because he was fighting
them. It is a very tragic situation no doubt and my heart goes out to his family
but we all know his story now and that is what makes it so emotional. Remove all
that you now know and put your selves in the position of the police. How many of
you have had to face a person who is aggressive and potentially high on drugs?
How would you react? I am so tired of people slamming the police when they are

The police are not to blame here, its the people that classified these weapons a
none lethal weapon. The police are trained to take action and reduce the problem
as quickly as possible. That is what they did and in the result the man dies.
The respondents at the airport were more responsible than the police, if the

Ban the lethal weapons. The police have an arsenal of tools at their disposal.
There are 3 police officers and one unarmed fellow who doesn't speak English in
an airport (of all places!) and they don't have the necessary skills to deal
with this situation? Shame on the police. Shame on Canada!

To all the dozens of people who stood by watching this man (and those that video
taped him) without bothering to approach him to offer help, shame on you!!!
Clearly the man was tired, confused and frightened and none of you had the heart
to help. It is not surprising then that those same people are so quick to blame
the very RCMP force that protects them. These people clearly have very little
understanding of what it is like to be in a alien environment and be frightened
and alone and not have anyone to communicate with. Yes, it is sad that the man
died, but lets give the RCMP the respect that they DO deserve and complete a
full investigation with all the facts. I can tell you that there are many facts
that have yet to be made public that will shed quite a different light on what
really happened and particularly the role that those that stood by and did
nothing ultimately had in this mans death.

It is obvious that the RCMP did not follow thier own 5 point program on
aggresive behaviour, soft talk first, if that does not work hard talk and after
that a more aggressive approach can be made but they were only there for 24
seconds obviously policy was not followed in this situation.

Question: what was the Officer striking at 7:11 and 7:12 of the video?; Did he
actually die of the taser or?? I would rather be shot with a taser then firearm
simply because the police can't hit the broadside of a barn with firearm let
alone a leg or arm; they're taught to shoot at the largest body mass which just
happens to contain the heart and most of our vital organs - even at 10 feet
away! Shooting in arms and legs happens in movies not real life, Police are
people too, they react just like everyone else, when they're in a situation -
thier hands quiver and move. The taser is simply a tool that should be used as a
situation escalates, as is batons, pepper spray and in extreme situations a
firearm. The primary tool that every one (including Police) is supposedly
taught, including in our schools to prevent bullying, is communication. The
speed at which the Police surrounded and dealt with the individual doesn't
appear to indicate that there was much of an attempt to communicate with him
from the video. No negotiation, no attempt at 1 to 1, no PA system; just what
information had been passed onto the Police from Security - a wacked out
foreigner (terrorist) on drugs threatening staff, passengers, and the security
of Canada? Too many questions? - the coroner (forensic examiner) is going to
have a lot to answer to on this one; as are the Police and their training in the
      use of their tools!.

I feel badly for this man's mother, who unwittingly told her son to wait for her
in the "baggage area" , which in Kamloops and most smaller airports is in a
public area. Unfortunately, she did not realize he would wait so long for her in
customs, (which in Vancouver is where the baggage area where she could not go -
Not speaking english, he would not realize she could not come into the baggage
area and by the time he came out, she had left. An unfortunate collection of
mistakes by all parties involved led to a tired , confused man dying.

If one is to actually carefully scrutinze the actions of the male, you can
clearly see that something is wrong. He's obviously disoriented, breathing very
heavily and exhibiting some violent tendencies by throwing things around. As
mentioned previousy, excited delerium is a possible explanation, which means
that he likely would have died no matter what. When police approached he tried
to move away, and given his outbursts, was tasered, which is congruent with the
nationally accepted use of force model. You can hear one of the observers say,
"He's still fighting with them." Further, a taser delivers 1/1000th the current
of a defribulator, and no medical diagnosis has ever stated that a taser has
caused the death of anyone. This is pure fear-mongering by people who don't
choose to educate themselves on actual facts.

I am outraged and deeply saddened after watching the video clip of Robert
Dziekanski being tasered. The 4 police officers clearly used excessive force and
showed an abuse of power. They should be held responsible for causing Mr.
Dziekanski's death. I see no difference in the gun and the taser, as their
results are the same. Therefore, the same rules should apply for the use of
these weapons. We the public must take a stand against the use of the tasers.

danger at any time. This is cold blooded murder. The police action is
reprehensible. I wonder what is the policeman, who used the taser, thinking
about his action? I am very disturb by Rob's comment. This is not the place to
bring up public disregard for police force work. We all know how dengerous job
they do every day. The criticism is directed to this particular action by
police. If use of taser in this case is not an axcessive force, what is. Who

After seeing the video I do feel the RCMP acted to quickly. If I was being held
for 10 hours and didn't know why, I would panic as well. Especially not being
able to speak the language. It also showed how one of the 4 officers put his knee
on the mans throat, after he was tasered and down on the floor.Four officers
couldn't handcuff him.I am apauled by this.If they needed help, there was
security there as well. Those 4 officers didn't have a clue how to handle the
situation. They never gave the poor guy a chance. Now he's dead. The RCMP should be
so proud of themselves.Just another screwup by the Mounties, they are getting a
great reputation for using to much force.Clearly that's what happened. They
should be charged with MURDER (if there is any justice). That video shows
everything very clearly. There was no need to take such agressive action, they
should have restrained the man with help if needed, NOT KILL HIM.Coming from a
Police family we all feel the same after watching that.If charges arn't laid
against these officers then a great miscaridge of justice is obvious. My thoughts
and prayers are with the man's family. Yes we need Police but we don't need
vigilanties like those 4.As a Canadian I demand that an inquirery be held
immediatly. They should be relieved of there duties ( without Pay) until this
matter has been brought before the courts. Then again, with the judges we have
they will get a slap on the hand, told to be more careful next time. What a
great country we live in.One must be scared of Police Officers. That's something
that happens in Mexico.I hope these officers can sleep at night. How dispicable
they are. I can't find the right words to use on how disgusted I am with this
whole matter. God help us all especially when your being pulled over by the
RCMP, you may end up DEAD. Why do they bother to train these guys, once they
leave depot there free to do what they feel is justified. I think those taser
guns should stay for serious matters, but nothing like what happened at the
airport. Four officers and not one with any brains. How shameful. Lots of
training is needed in using those taser guns.WOW this makes me sick.

While he did vandalize a few things, at the time the 4 "police" surrounded him,
he was not posing any threat. It was repeated over and over again that they
needed a translator (even if they got the language wrong), yet these keystone
cops just pulled out the taser and shot him. Dead. There's no going back here,
there's no payoff to compensate anybody. These cops should be charged with
manslaughter, and regardless of the outcome, immediately terminated with no
benefits and forfeiting their pensions. And the people in charge of YVR security
who let this continue before any intervention should be fired as well.

Embarassing....What goes around, comes around. Next time I hear about a cop
getting killed I'll remember that, being armed, they had a fighting chance -
unlike this poor man that FOUR trained officers couldn't physically contain, or
even try. If the police had their way this video would have never been released
and their internal review would clear any wrongdoing. I have two officers in my

what we have heard and seen so far.

people? Why do they have to behave so aggresively like cowboys that many have
mentioned below? I've seen the brutality of the police in this country many
times, and most of the time was needless. See Euro 2004 at the Danforth,
Toronto. See U20 World Cup in Toronto with Chilean team and fans. See peacefull
demonstrations in Toronto. Why all this aggresion? Obviously most police cannot
handle situations in a more peacefull manner. Their first choice is force. Why
in other countries police can handle more difficult situations without using the
force as their first choice? SHAME on Canada, SHAME to RCMP, SHAME to the

If Police are trained to use a Taser then they should also be trained to check

As Rob said we don't have much regard for the police and in my veiw it's totally
justified. They have brought it on themselves by lowering the criteria for being
an officer and keeping power seekers and cowards on the force as these four
numbskulls have clearly shown us in this viceo. The RCMP used to command respect
because they had people that used common sense. Now we seem to have tax
collectors with guns (and tasers) Heaven forbid that someone other than
themselves investigate what they do ,after all we must protect each other at all
cost. If the complaint that they seem to cling to is "we have a dangerous job
and should be allowed to do what we want" I suggest you hang up your guns and go
flip burgers unless of course you think it's too hot in that kitchen. Ban the
taser until someone with brains learns when and where and how to use it.

Combative? The man was backing away with his hands up when they tasered him?
What do you want? Shot in the back of the head, the 4 police officers claimed
self-defense. What kind of atrocities do we need to see on "video" before some
people here can actually show some human decency and agree with the truth? No
wonder the RCMP didn't want the video returned to Paul Pritchard. It bares
striking similarity to the LA Rodney incident which resulted in the LA riot of 92.

This is a very difficult one. Clearly the man was in a total state of mental
derangement, completely agitated. The Police did their thing in accordance with
a process for anyone that displays such irrational behaviour. Whether the police
use a baton, or whatever, the result likely could have been the same. The man
went into shock. I do not think the whole story has been told yet.

It's quick and easy to jump on the bandwagon and criticize, but it's important
to stop for a minute and consider the situation from the officer's perspective.
Here was an agitated and belligerant man who was yelling and waiving his hands
around in an airport. Nobody could possibly know who he was nor what his
intentions were. When faced with that situation, the officers had no way to know
he did not, for example, have a bomb vest or other hidden weapon. Their purpose
there is to protect the hundreds or thousands of people at the airport from
threats. This man was a potential threat. They had no information to suggest
otherwise, and had to treat him as such until they could know more about him.
Therefore, it is critical to wait for the investigation. If moved his hand
towards his jacket, then they could have been in fear he was about to trigger
explosives. We don't know. A gun in the hand is not the only way to pose a
lethal threat. If the officers felt there was a threat, an attempt to use
non-lethal force that would IMMEDIATELY immobilize him could very well be
justified. Perhaps they felt that trying to rush and tackle him may give him the
opportunity to trigger an explosive device. Maybe this wasn't the case. I don't
know. But neither does anyone else who has criticized their actions either. But
since we know absolutely nothing now, the last thing people should be doing is
rushing to judge the officers. Maybe the investigation will show that they
should have acted differently, and maybe this will simply prove to be a horribly
      tragic misunderstanding.

      Thu, Nov 15, 07 at 07:51 AM
Police are not all thugs, but this video makes one thing clear: we cannot
generalize. The same goes for the taser, it is clearly more lethal than the
moderate approach warranted by this particular situation. Don't allow those who
support tasers generalize its usefullness in order to make it sound like its use
is always appropriate. These officers were wrong. What is sad, is they will
likely face consequences for their poor security decisions. That's right,
officers are one of the few professions that rarely have to answer for their
misconduct due to their position of authority. That in itself is why tasers
should be illegal weapons even in the hands of an officer. The difference
between lethal and non-lethal force should be clear, (fisticuffs vs gun) and the
taser can fall on either side due to additional considerations. Officers
themselves have to make "split second life or death situations everyday", so by
their own admission the taser does not fit this classification as it clearly
does not allow officers to take into account all considerations before usage.
How can they truly protect, if you are zapped until proven innocent? That is not
the Canada I grew up in.

Police should use whatever force necessary to apprehend individuals that believe
they are above the laws of this country and feel they do not have to yield to
police when told to do so. I feel that capital punishment should be reinstated
for anyone taking the life of a law enforcement officer including correctional
officers, RCMP and City Police. These people put their lives on the line
everyday to protect us and all I've heard and seen in the news lateley is the
cold blooded murder of those who serve us. There is no greater gift than to lay
down your life for your fellow man, However when that life is taken in such a
casual way of late my motto for law enforcement is shoot first ask questions later.

      Thu, Nov 15, 07 at 09:03 AM
Call him aggressive or call him "distraught", it doesn't matter, the police had
an obligation to get him under control before he hurt people or damaged
property. They DIDN'T have an obligation to go "hands-on" with an obviously
irrational person, which would have exposed their guns to him, and very possibly
would have resulted in one or more of them being assaulted. The taser, or pepper
spray, was the best choice, and that will likely be the result of the
investigation. Of course, the anti-authority 60's throwbacks will then cry
"cover-up", but nothing would make them happy anyways.

Tazers are deadly and the cops are proving it. They should only ever be used in
a life or death situation. I saw cops taser local boys fighting over a girl.
They were on the ground fighting and the cop made no effort to break them up
physically or even verbally. The cop showed up without hat on or ID out and
tazered these guys. Further, cops do not have CPR training or protocool in place
and no defibrillators in their cars. Tazers should be pulled immediately.

Until ALL the facts are made public, until those who criticize the actions of
the police officers walk a mile in their shoes, until society comes to grip with
the fact that there are NO safe calls for police who attend them and finally,
until someone tells me why any of the bystanders did not even try to intervene
in this case BEFORE the police were called I refuse to condemn these officers
who were only trying to do their job and at the same time stay safe. This is
tantamount to convicting a paramedic for assault after breaking a bone in
someones' chest after doing CPR. Damned if you do, Damned if you don't. Society
needs to get a grip on the criticism they are doling out to police. Pretty soon,

Tasers are lethal force. Right up there with shooting someone. Why are police so
quick to use pepperspray and tasers to defuse situations, instead of
conversation? I understand if situations are out of control, but pepperspraying
women and children (Sechelt Band)and tasering obviously frightened immigrants
definitely doesn't seem like out of control situations. If they can't use common
sense to deal with situations, they shouldn't be police officers. And there need
to be severe guidelines for the use of tasers. And as long as the police are
allowed to investigate themselves; there will always be situations where they
lie to protect themselves and their fellow officers will back them up.

I think our RCMP need to review the it's raison d'etre and the ethos that is
instilled during training. This appears to be an American-style takedown,
committed without thought or compassion. Canada should not ape our neighbour's
unreasoning fears and panic about security. These officers were probably acting
within guidelines that were set out by their superiors. That is truly frightening!

This is once again a horrible example of the increasing misuse of a 'non-lethal
device' by police. There have been recent cases of taser abuse but this is
obviously the worse one so far. 4 large, fit RCMP cops should be able to easily
handle a distraught man who is clearly unarmed with out resorting to the taser.
If cops are afraid to get physical with subjects then they should not be cops in
the first place. They come across as nothing but redneck cowboy thugs.
