Hi Guys, let me take this opportunity to enlighten a little about marriage
rights in my country and how this Mister could afford to have so many wives. But
        first some myths to de-mystify

        1. When u get a wife in Kenya, "Tesciowe" are not a problem. This is because you
pay something we call dowry, it's like a thank you token that can amount to
thousands of dollars ( or equivalent of livestock in exchange - Cows, goats,
chicken, whatever moves iin your compound). Whilst it understood as a token of
gratitude, it has a much wider and deeper raminifications. In retropsect, it's
like you have "bought her". She is part of your property as a man. She cannot
return home and if she does, under domestic violence, she has to return to her
husband, because she has been "sold off". The only reason she can return to her
marternal home is if the husband cannot keep up with the "raty". (You can opt
for a down-payment and monthly or semi-yearly payments. If not, the brothers and
uncles of your wife come for her until you can afford extra cows to keep up)

Thus , there is no problem with "tescoiwe". Infact, all deals are done by the
men, the Father of the girl and the potential dowry the groom can afford. If he
can't afford the bride price, there are other candidates on the line. Based on
the fact that he had so many wives, he must be a wealthy man by his tradiitional
        standpoint.

To illustrate this point, My grandfather had 7 wives in the 50's because he was
well-up. But he lost all of them (The were reclaimed back by their brothers)
when he couldn't keep up with the "raty". Now, this might sound "different" and
has raised a lot of cultural clashes between the European view of marital
        relationships vs. African.

        2) Having many wives doesn't translate into being such a lucky dude. It's
responsibility first and foremost. The other reason that you can loose your wife
after dowry is , if you don't perform to satisfaction. She will approach the
elders and they will strip you off the village titles (Mr. Akuku must be an
elder to have so many wives) as well as your wife. THis is great shame in
African context. YOu have to perform on all your wiives to satisfaction. Now,
how he does it, I don't know. Each wife as a hut where the husband visits every
night or every other night. No wonder the wives serve big breakfasts for their
husbands the morning after - maybe after visiting 7 huts one nite!!!

        3) The polygamous nuptual setup was meant to avoid "kochanki" situation. In
appreciation of women's libido, I guess that's how ceremonies like FGM (Female
Genital Mutilation) came about, thus keeping your herd "Under control"... no man
        is superman

        4) Since the coming of Christianity and Colonization, a lot of pure African
Rituals (Besides Male Circumsition which is a must) were dropped by the
converted Christians. KEnya constitues of 75% Christians, 10% Islam and African
Religion, so you won't find a lot of polygamous situatiions. In substitution, we
        have "kochanki" coming up.

        5) The larger the family (wives and Children), the more respectd you are and the
more you are likely to prosper in the future ( The dowry of your daughters). For
example, My brother had to drop a BMW 3 -series before even negotiations started.

        6) Someone mentiioned the issue of AIDS. ANd yes, this has started being a
problem, esp. on issues of wife inheritance. It's not so dominant in many
African tribes , but some practice. If the late husbad was HIV infected and his
brother inherits her (Due to the magic of dowry), then he goes down too. n my
own opion, these are the issiues which have to be addressed very urgently

I hope this small extract has educated you a little why we don't have some of
the problems poles face, np. 130 tesciowych!!!!! smile)
