Rosyjskie zakusy na Arktyke

03.08.07, 04:07

Dania zeby wymienic glownych graczy. Kanada i Dania prowadza nawet swego

CHARLOTTETOWN — Russia’s actions at the North Pole show the importance of Canada
defending its sovereignty in the Arctic, says Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Harper, speaking after a Conservative caucus meeting today, said he doesn’t know
exactly what to make of Russia’s latest move — placing a Russian flag on the sea
      floor beneath the pole.

However, he said it shows Canada can’t be complacent about the North.

“It shows once again that sovereignty over the North and sovereignty in our
Arctic is going to be an important issue as we move into the future.

“This government has put a real emphasis on northern and Arctic sovereignty and
we will continue to do so and we will move quickly in that regard.”

The government plans to spend $7.5 billion to build and operate up to eight
Arctic patrol ships in a bid to help protect northern sovereignty.

Earlier today, Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay said Canada isn’t
threatened by the Russian actions at the pole.

“This is posturing. This is the true north strong and free, and they’re fooling
themselves if they think dropping a flag on the ocean floor is going to change
      anything.

“There is no question over Canadian sovereignty in the Arctic. We’ve made that
very clear. We’ve established — a long time ago — that these are Canadian waters
      and this is Canadian property.

“You can’t go around the world these days dropping a flag somewhere. This isn’t
      the 14th or 15th century.”

Leaders of an expedition aimed at strengthening Russia’s claim to much of the
Arctic Ocean region cheered today as two mini-submarines surfaced through a hole
in the ice after planting a flag on the seabed floor.

Aside from strengthening Russia’s legal claim to the Arctic and its predicted
wealth of gas and oil, the voyage was also arranged to study the climate,
biology and geology of the area.

But the expedition also reflects the intense rivalry between Russia, the United
States, Canada and other countries whose shores face the northern polar ocean
      for the Arctic’s ice-bound riches.

MacKay said the Law of the Sea protocol, which Russia and Canada have both
signed, “would immediately kick in were there to be any dispute.”

“And there is no dispute. This is Canadian territory, plain and simple.”

MacKay said recent announcements about new frigates for Arctic patrols show the
government’s commitment to the sovereignty of the north.

But New Democrat MP Dennis Bevington said the government isn’t doing enough to
defend Canada’s interests in the North.

“It shows just how far behind Harper and the Conservatives are when it comes to
asserting our legitimate claim to Arctic sovereignty,” said Bevington, who
represents the riding of Western Arctic.

He called for a debate in the House of Commons on Arctic sovereignty and
Canada’s claims to northern land and water.

          morskiej jeszcze kawalek

czytalam pare dni temu, ze jednymi z decydujacych czyn nikow maja byc wyniki
badan geologicnych formacji skalnych na dnie oceanu -
pierwsze wzmianki konfliktu pamietam sprzed jakis 5 lat, gdy w kanadyjskiej
