The House passed an $819bn stimulus package by a 244-118 vote. All Republicans
and 11 Democrats voted against it. The Senate version of the bill, which has
grown to $900bn, includes some Republican pork, which the Administration
expects will attract enough votes to win passage. The Washington Post says
“Buy American” provisions in the bill may be the first shot of a trade war
which could badly damage the world economy. Protectionism was one of the major
factors in turning the 1929 recession into a depression. GE, Caterpillar and
Boeing – which are expected to benefit from the provision – are all opposed to
it out of fear they will lose other business from retaliation.
