Do you celebrate name days?
Nobody in Upper Silesia does, but they're marked in all the calendars, and on
the display panels on buses it flashes up the date and then "Dzisiaj imieniny
obchodzą Tibor, Horacy i Judasz".
I recently discovered I've got 14 name days every year, so should I get a
cake or something?

In fact I do! Ever since I came to Poland, I've been celebrating my name days
because some of my neighbors and friends here always remind me of it. They
usually break out a bottle of wódka or beers.

as far as i remember, the one (of your 14) you celebrate is the one which comes
      first after your birthday

why not celebrate all 14? that's 14 bottles of vodka and even more beer!

Well, if people need an excuse...
But here folk are too proud of their tradition of not celebrating it.

Yes but, truth be told, my name is David ... and when I was still teaching in
England I used to buy daffs on the first of March to celebrate St David's.
Here there is no Dawidy on that date ...
Who are these dumb calendar writers?

Yes, there is imieniny Dawida on the 1st of March, I've found it here in a
            respectable source:

            kalendarz.pwn.pl/dzien.php?y=2006&m=3&d=1
so you can celebrate your nameday on the right day smile

I knew about that some time ago, but I thought it was up to him to reveal his
              secret, he said smugly.

hi, I"m from upper silesia and and I don't know anybody celebrating name days,
my mum told me it's connected with communism times when was tendency to replace
birthday by nameday, so it's not a case of being too proud but being against
regime. my parents come from different parts of Poland: Mazowsze and Kaszuby
and there are not nameday celebration either. no, in my region is one important
