"Under the designation Focke Achgelis company 223 developed in Germany end of
the 1930er years a helicopter with tandem rotors, which was produced as the
first German Huschrauber starting from 1941 in series. [ work on ] history the
company 223 V 11 during testing in TravemuendeEntgegen of the common opinion,
the helicopters would have been developed in the USA von Sikorski and Bell, in
Europe already before successfully in this area one worked (see history of the
development). Henrich Focke, one the founder of the company Focke Focke-Wulf,
had already succeeded with the L.G. 61 a large throw. From this more
operationally, larger helicopter was then developed, which received the sample
designation Focke Achgelis company 223 and the surname "Drache". After the
impressing flights of the L.G. 61 with Hanna Reitsch in the realm aviation
Ministry (RLM) Germany-resounds the company Focke Focke-Achgelis the
development of a militarily useful helicopter in the year 1938 assigned, which
should to be able to lift a load of 700 kg. The construction of engine plant,
transmission and rotor hubs should take over the company BMW. Here for the
first time the today still common arrangement with swash plate running in ball
bearings was used, with which the adjustment angle of the rotor blades was
steered cyclically and collectively. The prototype company 223 V1 began
testing in October 1939, whereby first different problems with oscillations
arose. Less than one year later flight captain Carl Bode could begin with free
flight testing. with the L.G. 61, some world records were set up like already
already before, which could be recognized however, because of the state of war,
not internationally. Thus e.g. a speed of 182 was obtained km/h and a rate of
climb of 8,80 m/s with a total weight of 3.705 kg. For series production one
agreed on the version company 223 E for a multi-purpose helicopter. Production
should take place in the work from Focke Achgelis in Delmenhorst, but after a
bomb attack it had to be shifted after Laupheim with Ulm. Toward end of the
war also still the enterprise was included from Weser aircraft construction in
Berlin Tempelhof into the manufacturing. All in all however only approx. 40
copies could be built. After end of the Second World War one of the Englishmen
crossed stressed company 223 as first helicopters the English Channel and in
England was tested and examined, until it fell with a test flight because of
malfunctions and one destroyed. In the Czechoslovakia, with which company Avia
became, still two copies from spare parts installed. Also in France the
helicopter was manufactured as advancement with the designation SE 3000 of
SNCASE. With it the helicopter development began with Aerospatiale. [ work
on ] construction and drive the trunk of the Focke Achgelis was a welded
tubular steel construction, which was covered with material in the rear range.
At the tail was a conventional tail unit with a trimable elevator installed
above. The front range with the cockpit and the engine was disguised with
sheet metal. The crew of 2 men (pilot and observer) was next to each other in
a "greenhouse" accommodated with very good all-round visibility. In the
center, near which emphasis became, the engine gear unit installed. In
addition a BMW Bramo 323 "Fafnir" nine-cylinder radial engine was used. The
two against-intimately running rotors were fastened next to each other on a
lattice tubular structure in a distance from 12,50 m. Everyone had three
sheets from steel cross-beams and timber ribs, with wood front edge and fabric
covering. Between the cockpit and the drive unit there was a loading space
with an electrical hoist. With it either freight or a rescue basket, hanging
on a hook, could be discharged and pulled up. The helicopter could be equipped
additionally still with 300 litres a seizing pylon tank for range enlargement.
