Thousands attend funeral of slain family
By MARGOT DUDKEVITCH

A pregnant mother and her four daughters were shot dead on Sunday by
terrorists as they drove on the Kissufim road in the Gaza Strip shortly after
noon.

Tali Hatuel, 34, who was 8 months pregnant, and her daughters, Hila, 11,
Hadar, nine, Roni, seven, and Merav, two, were shot at point-blank range,
after initial gunshots brought their car to a halt. The terrorists then
sprayed the car with bullets to ensure that all the occupants were dead.

Hatuel was driving to Ashkelon, where she was planning to join her husband,
David, in campaigning against the Gaza disengagement plan.
Three other Israelis were wounded in the attack: motorist Haim Aharon, a
resident of the Negev who works in Gush Katif, and two soldiers riding in a
jeep. The wounded were all hit by shrapnel and were airlifted to Soroka
Hospital in Beersheba. Two were reported to be in satisfactory condition and
the third in good condition.

Military sources said four terrorists participated in the attack. Initially,
two fired at IDF posts along the route, while the other two began shooting at
civilian cars. A bomb or grenade also exploded on the road during the
shooting, but caused no casualties.

After several attempts, soldiers shot and killed two of the terrorists. The
others fled.
Following the attack, IAF helicopters on Sunday evening fired a number of
missiles at the Hamas Al-Quds radio station in Gaza City. Seven people were
reportedly wounded in the attack.

A statement issued by the IDF Spokesman said the radio station constantly
broadcast hateful statements and alerted the movement's members to IDF
operations in the area.

Later in the night, four members of the Fatah al-Aksa Martyrs Brigades were
killed in Nablus when an IAF helicopter fired missiles into their vehicle.
Nader Abu Leil, a fugitive wanted by the Shin Bet and security forces for his
involvement in planning and launching terrorist attacks, was killed in the
attack along with Hashem Abu Hamdan.
The IDF confirmed the attack, stating that it was forced to take the action
in order to thwart further terrorist attacks.

President Moshe Katsav was among the thousands who attended the funeral of
the Hatuel family in Ashkelon on Sunday evening. Standing over the graves of
his wife and daughters, a sobbing David Hatuel said that he and his wife had
expected a son.

"Tali, I love you so much. I already miss you and feel lonely. All my family
has gone. At least one could have remained," he said. "I want to ask you and
the girls to forgive me for not being around enough."

David said that in recent weeks he would leave home early in the morning for
work and then participate in activities against the referendum on the Gaza
disengagement plan.

"I hardly saw my daughters," he said.
Na'ama Zarbiv, a neighbor of the Hatuel family's, said Tali and her daughters
were on their way to Ashkelon, where she was to undergo an ultrasound test
and then meet her husband, the principal of a local school. Together, they
were to go to polling stations to dissuade Likud members from voting in favor
of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's Gaza disengagement plan.

Tali Hatuel was a social worker for the Gush Katif Regional Council. Part of
her job was to comfort and assist victims of terrorist attacks.

The Islamic Jihad and the Popular Resistance Committee (PRC) took
responsibility for the attack, claiming it avenged the deaths of former Hamas
leaders Sheikh Ahmed Yassin and Abdel Aziz Rantisi. The terrorists were
identified as Ibrahim Hamad and Faisal Abu Naqirah, both from Rafah.
According to Palestinian reports, Abu Naqirah was affiliated with the PRC and
Hamad with the Islamic Jihad.

A CNN crew traveling in a bulletproof vehicle and a jeep on the Kissufim road
came under fire before the attack. None of the crew members was wounded and
they drove to the the Mor Bridge, where they alerted soldiers to the attack
and attempted to warn other motorists. The Hatuel family's car had already
passed by.

On April 27, an IDF officer and three soldiers were wounded several hundred
meters from the site of Sunday's ambush while attempting to thwart a car bomb
attack. Since October 2000, 10 Israeli civilians and five IDF soldiers and
officers have been killed in attacks on the Kissufim road, according to the
IDF. Since the beginning of 2004, terrorists have attempted to launch seven
attacks on the road, the IDF said.

In other incidents: At the Karni crossing on Sunday, Airports Authority
guards discovered a bomb hidden in a truck containing merchandise en route to
Judea and Samaria.

Shots were fired at IDF soldiers deployed near Kadim, close to Jenin. No one
was wounded in the attack. Shots were also fired at IDF soldiers south of
Jenin.

At the Adam junction, southeast of Ramallah, border policemen arrested a
Palestinian woman who attempted to stab an officer.
