Four US troops killed in Iraq, Bush concerned by civil war threat
BAGHDAD (AFP) - Iraqi insurgents have killed four US soldiers, the US
military has said, as President George W. Bush said he was worried that Iraq
might be sliding into civil war.
One American soldier was killed Monday when his vehicle struck a roadside
bomb in Baghdad, which is at the centre of mounting sectarian fighting and
insurgent attacks, a statement from US headquarters said.
Earlier two US marines and a navy sailor "died from wounds sustained due to
enemy action while operating in Al Anbar Province on August 20," the
statement said. Anbar is in Iraq's lawless west and a hotbed of anti-US
attacks.
The deaths brought the total number of US service personnel killed since
March 2003 in the Iraq campaign to 2,612, according to an AFP tally based on
Pentagon figures.
In Washington, when asked about the mounting toll, Bush told reporters: "I
hear a lot of talk about civil war. I'm concerned about that, of course."
He also ruled out an immediate US withdrawal from Iraq, saying it would be
a "huge mistake" to bring the troops home now.
The US deaths came as Iraqi security officials said that six Iraqis — three
of them soldiers — had been killed in a series of gun attacks in Baghdad and
the nearby flashpoint town of Baquba.

w końcu dotarło do morona
