Librarian 1: Dear Mr. "..........",
I apologize for the tardiness of this response. Your message arrived just
before I went on leave, and I only now rediscovered it in the active
questions bin.
You probably already have discovered the website of the American Polish
Advisory Council (www.apacouncil.org). They have a nice section on the
Warsaw Uprising, including Frequently Asked Questions. Here is what they
show for German casualties:
Germans: 16,000 killed and missing, 9,000 wounded. Up to 2,000 Germans were
captured by insurgents, 1,000 returned after the Uprising. Material losses:
three airplanes (two outside the city in Kampinos forest ), 310 tanks, self-
propelled artillery, armored cars, 4 rocket launchers, 22 artillery pieces
(caliber 75mm), and 340 trucks and cars.
I think these figures probably are realistic. The "Wielka Encyklopedia
Powszechna PWN" states that the Germans lost "about 26,000 soldiers." The
PWN "Encyklopedia Warszawy" published in 1994 states that the Germans lost
10,000 killed in action, 6,000 missing in action, 9,000 wounded, 290 tanks,
self-propelled artillery, armored cars, 4 rocket launchers, 240 trucks and
cars.
There have been many works published on the uprising in the past few years,
especially in Poland. Perhaps you will find information on losses by
individual units in some of them. You can browse our catalog at www.loc.gov,
and we do participate in Inter-library Loan.
Sincerely,
