quote from casablanca

19.03.08, 10:24
"Here's looking at you, kid!" - spoken by Rick to Ilsa in Casblanca. I've
searched half of the web and I still don't understand this idiom. There are
some suggestions that it is a contraction of "Here's to looking at you, kid!"
but I am not convinced, not in this context and not the way he says it.
Someone help me please!!!

      qe?
The line "Here's looking at you, kid.", spoken by Rick to Ilsa, is not in the
draft screenplays, and has been attributed to the poker lessons Bogart was
      giving Bergman between takes.[68]

...`It’s a compliment to Ilsa’s good looks (Ingrid Bergman’s character). When
Rick says, “Here’s looking at you, kid,” it is a contraction of, “Here’s *to*
looking at you, kid.” It’s supposed to be a toast (in the
“I-drink-this-in-honor-of” sense, not the hot, crispy bread sense smile....`
