Sex scandals may lead Catholics in US to defy Rome

FATHER Phil LaPlante is scared of children nowadays. He does not want to be
left alone with them. He shies away from giving Confirmation classes, and God
forbid that one of them might want a hug. That is because the 81-year-old
priest of Our Lady of Victories Catholic Church in Boston is terrified of being
accused of sexual abuse.
Lawyers revealed yesterday that more than 450 people have said that they were
sexually abused by priests in the Boston area alone. Across the country, at
least 62 priests have been suspended in sexual abuse cases in 17 different
dioceses since January.

With new allegations emerging every day, the pressure for fundamental changes
in the Roman Catholic Church, most notably an end to compulsory priestly
celibacy, is building rapidly.

More Americans have lost confidence in the leadership of the Catholic Church
than in any other institution, even the bankrupt energy company Enron,
according to a poll by The Wall Street Journal. The scandal has become so big
that some commentators believe that the world’s biggest, richest national
Catholic Church could split from Rome.

In his soft Irish lilt Father LaPlante explained that he loves children and has
never been suspected of any transgressions, but he is taking no risks. So he
sticks doggedly, and sadly, to a new set of strict Church rules on contact with
children. That rulebook, which warns priests never to be alone with children,
is only the short-term consequence of a scandal that is being called the
greatest crisis in the Catholic Church since the Reformation five centuries
ago.

The long-term repercussions are likely to be far more radical and affect the
core tenets of the Catholic faith. Most of America’s 64 million Roman Catholics
are demanding huge and revolutionary changes in the Church’s structure. That
could include everything from a shake-up of the Church hierarchy to a greater
role for the laity, an end to obligatory priestly celibacy and permission for
priests to marry.

No one underestimates the seriousness of this sexual abuse scandal — in
particular, the damning revelations of the Church’s role in covering up for
priests who routinely raped and molested young children.

“It is undoubtedly the greatest crisis in the modern Catholic Church since
Henry VIII split from Rome,” said Father Richard McBrien, a liberal theologian
at the Catholic University of Notre Dame in Indiana.

Documents prised by prosecutors from reluctant dioceses have proved that
bishops commonly protected priests who sexually abused children by moving them
from parish to parish when scandals broke. They failed to warn the new
parishioners and so put more children at risk.

That systematic cover-up is why most Catholics believe that this crisis will
lead to changes that go beyond the issue of abuse to address questions of
structure and government. It is why many Catholics are wearing badges bearing
the slogan: “Reform to Survive.”

The biggest change could be an end to the 900-year-old discipline of compulsory
priestly celibacy, a rule that is 900 years old and one that 70 per cent of
American Catholics now want changed because they link child abuse in the Church
with depriving priests of a healthy sex life. They also believe that if at
least some priests were parents, they would do far more to protect the welfare
of children and would not countenance this kind of official cover-up.

What seemed to be a far-fetched populist wish acquired formal support when the
official newspaper of the Archdiocese of Boston, the centre of debate on the
scandal, discussed the issue in positive terms in an editorial. “If celibacy
were optional, would there be fewer scandals of this nature in the priesthood?”
The Pilot asked.

A few days later, Cardinal Roger Mahony, of Los Angeles, the largest Catholic
community in America, suggested that the movement to end priestly celibacy was
quickly gaining momentum. “The Eastern Catholic Churches have always had a
married priesthood and I guess it works out fine. So I think it should be
discussed,” he said.

”Obligatory priestly celibacy is dead,” Father McBrien said. “We’re just
waiting for the funeral.”

The calls for an end to celibacy are also prompted by a huge decline in the
number and quality of priests. Since 1970 the number of men studying to become
priests has fallen from 18,000 to 3,500, while the average age of a priest has
risen from 54 to 62 in just 15 years. Theologians concluded that the demands of
celibacy are thought to play a large part in dissuading young men from joining
the priesthood.

“This scandal is bringing to the surface issues about governance and priesthood
that had to come to the surface anyway,” said Mary Jo Bane, a committed
Catholic and Professor of Public Policy at Harvard’s Kennedy School of
Government.

But this is still the Roman Catholic Church, a famously undemocratic
institution, and Americans are now looking anxiously to the Vatican to see
which reforms will be allowed. Ending celibacy and allowing priests to marry,
for example, are both changes that would have to be sanctioned by the Pope.

Nobody expects much change under the present conservative pontiff, so they are
pinning their hopes on his successor. But if the next Pope does not sanction
the changes so widely demanded by American Catholics, some have said that they
could even contemplate a break with Rome.

That is an extreme position which few see as a likely outcome. What is more
realistic, Catholics say, is that huge numbers could cling to their Christian
faith, but leave the institution.

“If the Vatican decides to clamp down on this uppity Church, numbers will go
down,” Ms Bane said. “We have lots of Churches in America, so there are a lot
of choices. You must remember, Americans are used to making individual choices
when it suits them.”

Events that shaped church scandal:

January 18, 2002: Father Geoghan convicted in a Boston court of sexually
abusing a boy a decade ago. Jailed for 10 years.

March 8: Bishop Anthony O’Connell of Florida resigns after confirming reports
that he sexually abused a teenage male student.

Late March: Reports that Rev Don Rooney, in Cleveland Ohio molested a teenage
girl.

April 4: Rev Rooney kills himself after claims made public.

April 8: Six New York priests suspended.

April 9: Nine priests in Ohio suspended.

April 15: Pope summons American cardinals to Rome. By now some 70 priests
nationwide have been suspended in cases involving allegations of sexual abuse.

iInaczej ludzie ich oleją a bez wpływów finansowych ta instytucja nie
generująca ŻADNEGO produktu poza mętnymi niepotwierdzonymi obiecankami padnie.
