French niche-fragrance brand Institut Très Bien was awarded first prize at
last night’s inaugural Beauty Challenger Awards held at industry trade show
Cosmeeting in Paris, France. The award ceremony was organized by Cosmeeting
in collaboration with the French Federation of Selective Distribution (FFPS)
and Cosmeticnews.com sister publications International Cosmetique News and
Cosmétique Magazine. The annual Challenger prize seeks to recognize best
practices and innovation in the niche-brand category.
Introducing the awards, FFPS president Jean-Pierre Lavigne said, “There is
luxury to be found in niche brands [...] you do not need to be present in
2,500 doors in order to innovate.”
In second place was Italian unisex face- and bodycare products VIA.gg.IO,
followed by French Alps-based skincare brand Fermes de Marie in third. In
fourth place was French organic skincare brand Doux Me. The winners were
chosen from candidates hailing from Australia (1), Austria (1), Denmark (1),
France (40), Germany (2), Greece (1), Italy (7), Luxembourg (1), Morocco (1),
Monaco (1), South Africa (2), Spain (3), Switzerland (1), the UK (4) and the
US (11).
Speaking with Cosmeticnews.com, Frédéric Burtin, ceo of Lyon, France-based
winner Institut Très Bien, defines the brand’s concept as “New Luxe”—moving
beyond the usual design and concept constraints facing larger, more
mainstream brands. “We want to go beyond status and want luxury to depend on
quality and the pleasure of the product,” he adds. The company, founded in
2003, carries four unisex skus: three fragrances called Cologne à la Russe,
Cologne à l’Italienne, Cologne à la Française and an ancillary face-wipe
carrying a derived scent.
Institut Très Bien is present in 12 doors in two markets. In France, they
sell out of Le Bon Marché, Printemps (Paris and Lyon), Franck et Fils
(Paris), the Institut Nickel (Paris), Taizo (Cannes), Urbain (Nantes) and
Intemporelle (Montpellier). In the UK, the brand is available in the Bliss
catalog and through Bliss at the up-market Kensington Spa, London.
