ARCHBISHOP ZYCINSKI SPEAKS AT UNSW
The Chancellor of the Catholic University of Lublin, Archbishop Jozef
Zycinski, spoke at UNSW on Friday night about his country's bid to join the
European Union (EU).
The author of over 30 books and more than 350 papers published in 9
languages, Archbishop Zycinski is a philosopher of science, a physicist, a
theologian and a leading participant in Polish public debate.
In an address to the European Law Centre, the Archbishop said that Poland,
which is slated to enter the EU by 2004, was divided between 'euroskeptics'.
who feared contagion by western social and moral problems ,and
'euroidealists'. A national referendum on the accession is due as soon as
March 2003, but swelling opposition threatens the 50 per cent turnout
required to validate the poll.
The free lecture was organised by The European Law Centre in conjunction with
the Institute for Polish Affairs. Co-director of the Centre, Professor Martin
Krygier, said the lecture is one of a number addressing Australian-European
legal issues and European Law, which are planned to take place in the next
few months.
