Jesus Christ - King of Poland

21.12.06, 11:00
Christians consider Jesus, as their God, to be Ruler of the Whole of Creation.
But now, if those wacky funsters in the Sejm have their way, he'll soon be
Ruler not only of the Whole of Creation, but also of Poland.

This won't solve any of Poland's many problems, but it might distract
attention from them for a few days.

I wouldn't mind if they build huge statue of Jesus, similar to the one in Rio,
which could draw tourist from abroads and translate into something real, namely
profits for folks in Poland..but what is this crowing Jesus as of King of
      Poland going to change??? smile

It is a statement of the obvious that Jesus is King of the World, as it says He
is King of Kings and Lord of Lords. It also says the earth is the Lord's and
        the fulness thereof.

However, one verse springs to mind, and it is what Jesus says to those who come
to arrest him armed - he says "my Kingdom is not of this world".

Jerusalem the golden, with milk and honey blest has yet to appear, and
regrettably it will be after the Vistula has ceased to flow through what used
        to be the Polish countryside.

"These things shall vanish all - the city of God remaineth" wrote Luther, at
the end of the hymn "Ein fester Burg", the battle hymn of the Reformation as it
sometimes affectionately called in Protestant circles.

I am therefore worried that the making of Christ into King of a wordly kingdom
could detract from people thinking of Him as the Everlasting King of the
        Heavenly Kingdom.

I am also worried that the construction of a large statue could result in more
idolatry, as we are not meant to bow down before the works of men's hands - it
is clear in the Bible and is repeated so many times I don't know what is
actually repeated more often - there's far more on the sin of idolatry than
sexual immorality, actually, but a lot of the priestly prudes appear to have
missed that one. Jesus wants people to believe in Him, to worship Him in spirit
and in Truth, and to come to him in prayer looking for salvation and adoption.

I don't think that the externalisation of religion helps people to achieve what
Jesus wants, butI may of course be wrong.

Well, humans are of this world and not some other heavenly one, so we tend to
pay more attention to tangible goods...But generally I do agree, I would prefer
if Poles and other religious folks act according to the Bible rather then
idolize Jesus, his mother Mary and other saints.

Don't know, but if there will be a coronation ceremony, I'll certainly go to
      see it.

well if anyone's going to be King... to be honest Jesus is an incomparably
better example than any politician . yeah, maybe there is room for something
symbolic, even if it shouldn't logically make any real difference... hey, if i -
as an atheist - 'm happy with Jesus being king, then go ahead!

I believe Jesus was a cool guy back front and center. But according to the RP's
constitution the country's a republic. Unless there is some hidden meaning to
      Rzeczpospolita I never knew.

Apparently you did not know that although word "Rzeczpospolita" might be
translated as Republic since, it derives from polish word for; "common" still,
it was called that even when it was Ruled by kings....so it doesn't necessary
means that Poland is a Republic...

          Art. 10.
          1. Ustrój Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej opiera się na podziale i równowadze władzy
ustawodawczej, władzy wykonawczej i władzy sądowniczej.
          2. Władzę ustawodawczą sprawują Sejm i Senat, władzę wykonawczą Prezydent
Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej i Rada Ministrów, a władzę sądowniczą sądy i trybunały.

Rzeczpospolita, republika, patato, potahto- where's the king?

Untill 1795, for several centuries Poland was ruled by kings, first hereditary,
later elected kings, and it was always called "Rzeczypospolita". Often they
used term "Rzeczypospolita krolewska" (Royal Republic) which sounds
contradictory, although kings were elected by the nobility, as commoners didn't
            have a full rights...

Historically Rzeczypospolita was ruled by... kings for centuries, it doesn't
            necessery translates into republic.

If you put IV in front of it, it means "probably not". A bit like the way "in
vitro" fertilisation, or IVF is "probably not fertilisation". By the same
token, this IV Rzeczpospolita is probably not a republic any more.

Then again "rzecz" means "thing" and "pospolita" means "common", and maybe they
take the phrase "common thing" to mean something more prosaic than Plato had in
        mind.

Maybe they mean it to be a place where common people live.
