Terry Venables is the new manager of Leeds United, after the club made an
announcement to the Stock Exchange.
Sky Sports News revealed that Venables would be appointed after the man that
replaced him at Middlesbrough, Steve McClaren, and Celtic boss Martin O'Neill
ruled themselved out of the running.
A statement to the Stock Exchange read: "Leeds United Plc announces the
appointment of Terry Venables to the position of manager with immediate effect.
He has today signed an initial two-year contract.
"Terry Venables has almost unrivalled football management experience, including
spells at Tottenham Hotspur, Barcelona, England and Australia. In making this
announcement Leeds United would like to place on record their thanks to ITV for
releasing Terry from his existing Premiership and Champions League contract."
Venables, who will be publicly unveiled at a press conference on Wednesday,
will have to work quickly to strengthen his Leeds side, with less than two
months before the new transfer deadline on August 31.
He will also have to quieten speculation over Rio Ferdinand, who has been
strongly linked with a move away from Elland Road following his terrific
performances in the World Cup.
El Tel's last managerial role was at Middlesbrough, where he took over as coach
under Bryan Robson in December 2000 for six months and steered the Teessiders
to Premiership safety.
He will be a popular choice with the fans, having had previous experience with
Barcelona, Tottenham, QPR, Portsmouth and Crystal Palace. The only trophy he
has won as a manager in England is the FA Cup with Tottenham in 1991.
David O'Leary was sacked on June 27 after failing to guide the club into the
Champions League.
