WORLD CUP: BRAZIL WINS GAME WITH ENGLAND FOR THE THIRD TIME ALREADY
As soon as another pair of teams for the World Cup quarter-finals outlined, we
mean England and Brazil, football experts said at once that it would be nice
for the rivals to meet at the final match. But the forecasts failed. A new
world champion was to become clear after a game of the two teams.
Brazilian and English teams played three times with each other in final matches
of world championships: in 1958 in Sweden they drew; in 1962 in Chile Brazil
won with the score 3:1 and England was beaten once again with the score 1:0 at
the 1970 world cup in Mexico. Thus, English team never succeeded to beat Brazil
squad at final matches of the world cups.
British forward Michael Owen scored the first goal at the 23rd minute of the
match, no chances for Brazilian goalkeeper were left when he met face to face
with Owen. The second added minute of the first period brought a response goal
scored by Brazilian forward Rivaldo. The teams left for the break with a 1:1
tie.
The second period began rather successfully for Brazilians: Ronaldino
wonderfully performed a penalty kick and the score became 2:1. However, at the
57th minute of the match the senior referee Felipe Ramos Rizo, Mexico, sent
Ronaldino off the field. The gesture inspired the British squad, but the score
remained unchanged till the end of the match. Brazilians have defeated English
team for the third time.
The match was played at the Shizuoka stadium (Japan) where 50,600 people
gathered to watch the game.
