The Tel Aviv District Court released for
publication Thursday that a Lebanese citizen has
been held in administrative detention for the past
year, after having served five years in an Israeli
jail.

The judge enabled only partial
disclosure of the affair,
leaving out many details
still regarded as
confidential.

The detainee, Ibrahim
Abu-Zeib, a Lebanese
Christian, was sentenced to
five years in prison after
being convicted of membership in the Lebanese
Hezbollah militant organization. He was,
however, acquitted of planting bombs aimed at
South Lebanese Army soldiers.

Abu-Zeib was released about one year ago, but
the Israel Defense Forces chief of staff then
issued a decree placing him in the category of
"illegal combatants." Other detainees with the
same status include Mustafa Dirabi and Sheikh
Abdel Karim Obeid, who were both kidnapped by
Israel so they could be used as bargaining
chips for the release of missing IAF navigator
Ron Arad.

Abu-Zeib's attorney, Zvi Reish, claims that the
administrative detention is illegal, and that
his client would never return to the ranks of
the Hezbollah. Reish added that Abu Zeib was a
married clerk with four children.
