give someone the blink

I came across this expression used in two different situations.
In one a person uses it in what seems to be a negative context: "Gave him the blink. Who does he think he is?"
and in the second a positive one: "I gave her the blink. Well, I tried. But she wasn't having any".
can someone help explain?

it sounds kinda weird to me.I never heard it before.

as for sentence #1 I would say: Gave him the look.
Sentence #2 sounds odd as well. I gave her a wink is what I would say.

there is a very similar saying "to tip sb the wink" and means dac cynk so another words it's an idiom, isn't it?
nevertheless worth remembering!!
