Dear Mr de Burca,
please accept my deepest sypathy: you couldn't afford for Benetton winter coats for kids, thats is horrible. Obviously, as everyone around the world knows, accessability to Benetton winter coats is objective indicator of minimum living standards.
But actually, c'mon, why Benetton? Please, go ahead, why not Yves Saint Laurent? D&G?
How Do The Poles Survive? And how do two times poorer Ukrainians survive? And how about Kyryz people being even poorer than them, and Vietnamese, much poorer than them, not mentioning Africa?
(time to appreciate wise choice of Polish, not for example Zambian, wife?)
It is simple - you do whatever it takes to survive.
For most of the time while I was reading your letter, I was accomanied by a though that it is written by some alien who suddenly landed on this planet and found out that people living on some parts of the globe (its nothern-western parts) are far more privilaged than the rest of its inhabitants.
Up to the last line ("And most of all, how do you put up with the feeling of being screwed by your country?"), because than I realised that it has been writen by a sheer idiot. Such level of demagogy and stupidity doesn't event deserve for a commentary.
With best regards, and wishing you more understanding to the place you live in,
Stranger
