Why Do Intellectuals Oppose Capitalism?

The Value of Intellectuals
Intellectuals now expect to be the most highly valued people in a society,
those with the most prestige and power, those with the greatest rewards.
Intellectuals feel entitled to this. But, by and large, a capitalist society
does not honor its intellectuals. Ludwig von Mises explains the special
resentment of intellectuals, in contrast to workers, by saying they mix
socially with successful capitalists and so have them as a salient comparison
group and are humiliated by their lesser status. However, even those
intellectuals who do not mix socially are similarly resentful, while merely
mixing is not enough--the sports and dancing instructors who cater to the rich
and have affairs with them are not noticeably anti-capitalist.

Why then do contemporary intellectuals feel entitled to the highest rewards
their society has to offer and resentful when they do not receive this?
Intellectuals feel they are the most valuable people, the ones with the highest
merit, and that society should reward people in accordance with their value and
merit. But a capitalist society does not satisfy the principle of
distribution "to each according to his merit or value." Apart from the gifts,
inheritances, and gambling winnings that occur in a free society, the market
distributes to those who satisfy the perceived market-expressed demands of
others, and how much it so distributes depends on how much is demanded and how
great the alternative supply is. Unsuccessful businessmen and workers do not
have the same animus against the capitalist system as do the wordsmith
intellectuals. Only the sense of unrecognized superiority, of entitlement
betrayed, produces that animus.

Why do wordsmith intellectuals think they are most valuable, and why do they
think distribution should be in accordance with value? Note that this latter
principle is not a necessary one. Other distributional patterns have been
proposed, including equal distribution, distribution according to moral merit,
distribution according to need. Indeed, there need not be any pattern of
distribution a society is aiming to achieve, even a society concerned with
justice. The justice of a distribution may reside in its arising from a just
process of voluntary exchange of justly acquired property and services.
Whatever outcome is produced by that process will be just, but there is no
particular pattern the outcome must fit. Why, then, do wordsmiths view
themselves as most valuable and accept the principle of distribution in
accordance with value?

From the beginnings of recorded thought, intellectuals have told us their
activity is most valuable. Plato valued the rational faculty above courage and
the appetites and deemed that philosophers should rule; Aristotle held that
intellectual contemplation was the highest activity. It is not surprising that
surviving texts record this high evaluation of intellectual activity. The
people who formulated evaluations, who wrote them down with reasons to back
them up, were intellectuals, after all. They were praising themselves. Those
who valued other things more than thinking things through with words, whether
hunting or power or uninterrupted sensual pleasure, did not bother to leave
enduring written records. Only the intellectual worked out a theory of who was
best.

The Schooling of Intellectuals

What factor produced feelings of superior value on the part of intellectuals? I
want to focus on one institution in particular: schools. As book knowledge
became increasingly important, schooling--the education together in classes of
young people in reading and book knowledge--spread. Schools became the major
institution outside of the family to shape the attitudes of young people, and
almost all those who later became intellectuals went through schools. There
they were successful. They were judged against others and deemed superior. They
were praised and rewarded, the teacher's favorites. How could they fail to see
themselves as superior? Daily, they experienced differences in facility with
ideas, in quick-wittedness. The schools told them, and showed them, they were
better.

The schools, too, exhibited and thereby taught the principle of reward in
accordance with (intellectual) merit. To the intellectually meritorious went
the praise, the teacher's smiles, and the highest grades. In the currency the
schools had to offer, the smartest constituted the upper class. Though not part
of the official curricula, in the schools the intellectuals learned the lessons
of their own greater value in comparison with the others, and of how this
greater value entitled them to greater rewards.

The wider market society, however, taught a different lesson. There the
greatest rewards did not go to the verbally brightest. There the intellectual
skills were not most highly valued. Schooled in the lesson that they were most
valuable, the most deserving of reward, the most entitled to reward, how could
the intellectuals, by and large, fail to resent the capitalist society which
deprived them of the just deserts to which their superiority "entitled" them?
Is it surprising that what the schooled intellectuals felt for capitalist
society was a deep and sullen animus that, although clothed with various
publicly appropriate reasons, continued even when those particular reasons were
shown to be inadequate?

In saying that intellectuals feel entitled to the highest rewards the general
society can offer (wealth, status, etc.), I do not mean that intellectuals hold
these rewards to be the highest goods. Perhaps they value more the intrinsic
rewards of intellectual activity or the esteem of the ages. Nevertheless, they
also feel entitled to the highest appreciation from the general society, to the
most and best it has to offer, paltry though that may be. I don't mean to
emphasize especially the rewards that find their way into the intellectuals'
pockets or even reach them personally. Identifying themselves as intellectuals,
they can resent the fact that intellectual activity is not most highly valued
and rewarded.

The intellectual wants the whole society to be a school writ large, to be like
the environment where he did so well and was so well appreciated. By
incorporating standards of reward that are different from the wider society,
the schools guarantee that some will experience downward mobility later. Those
at the top of the school's hierarchy will feel entitled to a top position, not
only in that micro-society but in the wider one, a society whose system they
will resent when it fails to treat them according to their self-prescribed
wants and entitlements. The school system thereby produces anti-capitalist
feeling among intellectuals. Rather, it produces anti-capitalist feeling among
verbal intellectuals. Why do the numbersmiths not develop the same attitudes as
these wordsmiths? I conjecture that these quantitatively bright children,
although they get good grades on the relevant examinations, do not receive the
same face-to-face attention and approval from the teachers as do the verbally
bright children. It is the verbal skills that bring these personal rewards from
the teacher, and apparently it is these rewards that especially shape the sense
of entitlement.

Here are key quotes from the failed Brussels summit that collapsed before
finalising a first-ever constitution for the expanding European Union:

- Italian Prime Minister and summit chairman Silvio Berlusconi on proposals to
redistribute national voting rights after the EU's forthcoming expansion: "The
disagreement was total."

- Polish Foreign Minister Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz: "If it is not possible to
agree on the change today we shall wait. We really have to give Nice a chance,"
he said, referring to an EU treaty three years ago that gave Poland
disproportionate voting power.

- A diplomatic source: "(German Chancellor Gerhard) Schroeder asked (Polish
Prime Minister Leszek) Miller point blank in their one-on-one, whether he would
be able to agree to anything. He said no."

- Kirsty Hughes, a senior research fellow at the Centre for European Policy
Studies, on Poland's refusal to compromise: "For a new member state before it
even joins (the EU) to be producing one of the biggest crises the EU has ever
faced is quite extraordinary.

"The Poles have dug themselves into a hole domestically with their stark
rhetoric in favour of Nice. How is the rest of Europe supposed to help them out
of this hole?"

- European Parliament President Pat Cox: "There has been a setback but it is
not a calamity. But it is a reflection of the immensity of the challenge which
we've undertaken. It is a reflection of the absence this weekend of the
collective will and wisdom to settle."

- British Prime Minister Tony Blair: "To look at this in sort of apocalyptic
terms is, I think, rather misguided.

"There's all sorts of different ways you can find a path through this... My
best judgement is that it's not an impossible mountain to climb."

- French President Jacques Chirac proposed the creation of "pioneer groups"
within the European Union to lead the bloc out of the current impasse. "I
continue to think that it is a good solution because it will give an engine, it
sets the example. I think that will allow Europe to go quicker, further and to
(work) better."

- Berlusconi: "I am not in favour of an initiative by the six founding members.
I don't believe it is appropriate to form groups of countries.

"It is important for all countries to work collectively and on an equal footing
on the constitutional project."

- Schroeder: "It is clear that if we don't manage within a forseeable timespan
to implement the constitutional process set out in the convention (which
produced the draft constitution), the consequence can be a two-speed Europe.

"We don't have to wish for it and we don't wish for it, but that will be the
logical consequence of a definitive failure, which of course we don't want."

- Blair: "What would be bad for Britain would be to be in a position where some
of these anti-Europeans want it to be, which is always on the margins, up in
the crowds, shouting abuse at everyone else, and not out on the pitch.

"What the last few days has taught me again is the importance of Britain being
there ... in the centre of Europe ... playing a role."

- Senior British opposition Conservatives member Michael Ancram on the EU
constitution: "It is a matter of relief that for the moment it is not going to
be rammed down the throats of the British people.

"We should be grateful towards the Poles and the Spaniards for standing up for
their national interests in a way that our government was not prepared to do."

- Irish Prime Minister and incoming EU president Bertie Ahern: "I don't think
before March there will be any agreement. There's not enough political will to
find an agreement."

"This is a huge project. This is a fundamental change for the whole of Europe.
It's not unusual on such a big project that people have to reflect on it."

The collapse of the European Union's attempt to produce its first constitution
can be blamed on a section of Europe's political elite, Czech President Vaclav
Klaus said on Saturday.

A two-day summit in Brussels broke up after leaders failed to resolve bitter
disputes over how the EU should run its affairs after it expands from 15 to 25
countries in May 2004.

In a statement Klaus said the result of the summit was "really a failure by one
part of the European elite, which by trying to impose specific things was more
interested in personal prestige than the future of the European continent."

"The attempt to impose a European constitution was a radical step on the way to
creating a European super-state," he said. "Anyone who did not know that, knew
nothing," he added.

"Given the way the talks went and their outcome, one could argue that those who
are beginning to be aware of this danger are becoming more and more numerous,"
Klaus said.

INTRODUCTION to "A DEDICATION TO SPINOZA'S INSIGHTS":

I stumbled upon Spinoza after I studied Calculus in college. Spinoza's
definitions of sorrow, boredom, joy; hate, indifference, love, seemed to
me to lend themselves to Calculus expression. The more I studied these
equations the more I realized how important they were in understanding
roller-coaster emotions and everyday relationships—you love not out of
altruism, but out of self-interest.

As I kept studying Spinoza, I was really hooked when what happened to
me is what Elwes thought happened to Spinoza.

[37] The biography of the philosopher supplies us in some sort
with the genesis of his system. His youth had been passed in the
study of Hebrew learning, of metaphysical speculations on the
nature of the Deity. He was then confronted with the scientific
aspect of the world as revealed by Descartes. At first the two
visions seemed antagonistic, but, as he gazed, their outlines
blended and commingled, he found himself in the presence not of
two, but of ONE; the universe unfolded itself to him as the necessary

result of the Perfect and Eternal G-D.

This "unfolding itself" was to me an infinite "organic interdependence of
parts" which led directly to the "Golden Rule"; not out of altruism but of
enlightened self-interest.

Now, after some fifty-six years, I am still studying Spinoza and gaining
ever-new insights.

General
The solid state of water is known as (water) ice; the gaseous state is known as
steam. The units of temperature (formerly the degree Celsius and now the
Kelvin) are defined in terms of the triple point of water, 273.16 K (0.01 °C)
and 611.2 Pa, the temperature and pressure at which solid, liquid, and gaseous
water coexist in equilibrium.

At temperatures greater than 647 K and pressures greater than 22.064 MPa, a
collection of water molecules assumes a supercritical condition, in which
liquid-like clusters float within a vapor-like phase.

A body of water is a term for an ocean, sea, lake, river, stream, canal, pond,

Chemists sometimes jokingly refer to water as dihydrogen monoxide or DHMO (see
http://www.dhmo.org/), the systematic covalent name of this molecule,
especially in parodies of chemical research that call for this "lethal
chemical" to be banned. The systematic acid name of water is hydroxic acid or
hydroxilic acid, although these terms are rarely used.


The dipolar nature of water
An important feature of water is its polar nature. The water molecule forms an
angle, with hydrogen atoms at the tips and oxygen at the vertex. Since oxygen
has a higher electronegativity than hydrogen, the side of the molecule with the
oxygen atom has a partial negative charge, relative to the hydrogen side. A
molecule with such a charge difference is called a dipole. The charge
differences cause water molecules to be attracted to each other (the relatively
positive areas being attracted to the relatively negative areas) and to other
polar molecules. This attraction is known as hydrogen bonding.

This relatively weak (relative to the covalent bonds within the water molecule
itself) attraction results in physical properties such as a very high boiling
point, because a lot of heat energy is necessary to break the hydrogen bonds
between molecules. For example, Sulphur is the element below oxygen in the
periodic table, and its equivalent compound, hydrogen sulphide (H2S) does not

Hydrogen bonding also gives water an unusual behaviour when freezing. As with
most other materials, the liquid becomes denser with lowering temperature.

for water life in winter. Water chilled at the surface becomes denser and
sinks, forming convection currents that cool the whole water body, but when the
temperature of the lake water reaches 4°C, water on the surface, as it chills
further, becomes less dense, and stays as a surface layer which eventually
forms ice. Since downward convection of colder water is blocked by the density
change, any large body of water frozen in winter will have the bulk of its
water still liquid at 4°C beneath the icy surface, allowing fish to survive.
(this is one of the principal examples of finely-tuned physical properties that
support life on Earth that is used as an argument for the Anthropic
Cosmological Principle).

Another consequence is that ice will melt if sufficient pressure is applied.


Water as a solvent
Water is also a good solvent due to its polarity. The solvent properties of
water are vital in biology, because many biochemical reactions take place only
within aqueous solutions (e.g., reactions in the cytoplasm and blood). In
addition, water is used to transport biological molecules.

When an ionic or polar compound enters water, it is surrounded by water
molecules. The relatively small size of water molecules typically allows many
water molecules to surround one molecule of solute. The partially negative
dipoles of the water are attracted to positively charged components of the
solute, and vice versa for the positive dipoles.

In general, ionic and polar substances such as acids, alcohols, and salts are
easily soluble in water, and nonpolar substances such as fats and oils are not.
Nonpolar molecules stay together in water because it is energetically more
favorable for the water molecules to hydrogen bond to each other than to engage
in van der Waals interactions with nonpolar molecules.

An example of an ionic solute is table salt; the sodium chloride, NaCl,
separates into Na+ cations and Cl- anions, each being surrounded by water
molecules. The ions are then easily transported away from their crystalline
lattice into solution. An example of a nonionic solute is table sugar. The
water dipoles hydrogen bond to the dipolar regions of the sugar molecule and
allow it to be carried away into solution.


Cohesion and surface tension
The strong hydrogen bonds give water a high cohesiveness and, consequently,
surface tension. This is evident when small quantities of water are put onto a
nonsoluble surface and the water stays together as drops. This feature is
important when water is carried through xylem up stems in plants; the strong
intermolecular attractions hold the water column together, and prevent tension
caused by transpiration pull. Other liquids with lower surface tension would
have a higher tendency to "rip", forming vacuum or air pockets and rendering
the xylem vessel inoperative.


Conductivity
Pure water is actually an insulator, meaning that it does not conduct
electricity well. Because water is such a good solvent, it often has some
solute dissolved in it, most frequently salt. If water has such impurities,
then it can conduct electricity well.


Electrolysis


Water can be split into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by
passing a current through it. This process is called electrolysis. Water
molecules naturally disassociate into H+ and OH- ions, which are pulled toward
the cathode and anode, respectively. At the cathode, two H+ ions pick up
electrons and form H2 gas. At the anode, four OH- ions combine and release O2
gas, molecular water, and four electrons. The gases produced bubble to the
surface, where they can be collected.


Reactivity
Chemically, water is amphoteric: able to act as an acid or base. Occasionally
the term hydroxic acid is used when water acts as an acid in a chemical
reaction. At a pH of 7 (neutral), the concentration of hydroxide ions (OH-) is
equal to that of the hydronium (H3O+) or hydrogen ions (H+) ions. If the
equilibrium is disturbed, the solution becomes acidic (higher concentration of
hydronium ions) or basic (higher concentration of hydroxide ions).

Theoretical vs experience
In theory, pure water has a pH of 7. In practice, pure water is very difficult
to produce. Water left exposed to air for any length of time will rapidly
dissolve carbon dioxide, forming a solution of carbonic acid, with a limiting
pH of ~5.7. (reference: Kendall, J. (1916), Journal of the American Chemical

Purifying water
Purified water is needed for many industrial applications, as well as for
consumption. Humans require water that does not contain too much salt or other
impurities. Common impurities include chemicals or harmful bacteria. Some
solutes are acceptable and even desirable for perceived taste enhancement.
Water that is suitable for drinking is termed potable water.

What does the name stand for ?
Woda stands for "Web Oriented DAtabase". This does not mean it is not
relational or object-oriented but that it is optimized for the use on the Web.
In many Indo-European languages, words sounding like "woda" mean water -
therefore the tap and the moisture on this Web page. It is also true, that Woda
is caffeine free. No Java, SQL, PhP, C# inside.

What can I do with WODA ?
Any simple database application which:
Should run on the WWW,
requires user input and
can be modeled as a few loosely related tables.
Examples of such applications are membership lists, bibliographies, document
archives, virtual journals and libraries, catalogues, hot lists, classifieds,
discussion systems, mailing list archives, rings of web pages,
questionnaires ...
Payroll systems, blood bank applications, military strength applications are
not what you would use WODA for (although it would be tempting).

Where is it used ?
Since it is so easy to generate a new database (a 10 min effort from a schema
to fully running application), we are using it for everything. Some of our
recent projects are:
SOPS - SciX Open Publishing System - an application allowing open access
publishing of (scientific) works. The organization of conferences and workshops
including the review process is supported as well.
CUMINCAD - a simple bibliographic database of CAAD papers.
CONNET Calculation and Software Center - a relational database containing
information about publishers of engineering software.

What are WODA's strenths ?
The usual way of developing database applications is to define the schema and
the application logic, and create the three tier structure:

implement the data storage in SQL,
the application logic in a programming language (such as C, C#, PHP ...) and
define the user interface as a combination of static html files and dynamically
generated pages.
The approach taken by Woda is radically different. One just needs to define
what the data to be managed is. If, for example, it includes the handling of a
person's name, all the we know about names is stored in one place. How a name
is displayed, how is it entered, who is allowed to enter it etc. Based on this
hundered of different pages needed to use and manage the application are
generated automatically.

WODA is relying on an extensive data definition structures that allow the
manager of the database to rapidly define the whole database system without
programming or defining individual screens or forms. Decent application can be
done without any HTML coding or programming. Basic knowledge of programming
principles is welcome, though.
WODA is easy to install and self contained. No other libraries or packages are
required. Only Perl language interpreter and an httpd server must be available.
No CPAN modules are required; no database (like mySQL) is needed.
After WODA is installed and set up, 99.9% of all database development tasks can
be done from within the browser. The database definition is done through forms
using browser or even using sample data.
WODA's data storage is robust. Data is stored in ASCII files, easy to read,
port, hack ...
WODA supports several field types including TEXT, TEXTAREA, HTMLAREA, OPTION,
LINKOPTION, DATE, EMAIL, URL, FILE, USERFILE, COMPUTE and BREAK.
WODA allows for rich text editing (WYSIWYG) of HTMLAREA type fields which makes
it an ideal tool for a content management application.
WODA can include binary fields, like documents, images, movies, etc. of any
size.
There is no limit to size of record or number of records other than those
imposed by the Web server's file system.
WODA uses industry standard (e.g. Yahoo, AltaVista) search syntax. 'Best-match'
searching does a full text search of the database and provides relevancy
ratings.
Complex searches can be assembled using friendly query builder interface
similar to other query building applications (e.g. MS Query).
Searches are remembered and can be stored. Search history is maintained.
Several browsing options are generated automatically based on OPTION fields,
e.g. Yahoo like hierarchical browsing and several other, more sophisticated.
The system messages can be translated. From English, WODA has been translated
into German, French, Spanish, Swedish, Croatian and Slovenian.
Each record may be password protected by the person who entered it.
Database administrator can create user based protection of operations and data,
based on server side authentication, username/password validation within WODA
or host name based authentication within WODA.
Database administration is web based - the administrator may delete outdated
records, generate static .html pages and even change the database
definition ... all from within a browser.
WODA remembers. It remembers user's options, when he last searched for
something (so that we can show only changes since), an item he typically enters
into a field (e.g. email address) etc. WODA can store any filled-in form.
WODA includes an agent that can do searches for the user and remind him of
changes periodically by email.
WODA databases are open and can export/import data from Windows applications
such as Microsoft Excel or Access.
WODA is fast.
WODA includes shopping basket functionality, which is very handy to collect
favorite items from a database and print them out together (e.g. all relevant
papers, all interesting people, all interesting links ...).
WODA handles registration of the users of the database, so the administrator
knows who is using the application.
WODA allows for unlimited undo of all database transactions and
backups/restoration of the data.
WODA maintains its own log files.
WODA identifies Web robots and treats them as specified.
WODA can deliver Web Services, inclusing a service to populate the Office 2003
Research Task Pane.
WODA includes Web Services interfaces (defined in WSDL) and XML API that allows
for read/write of data in XML.
What could be WODA's weaknesses ?
WODA uses the file system and no particular database for data storage. The good
thing is, you don't need anything else. The bad is that maybe you'd like WODA
to manage databases in mySQL etc.
The documentation is written by a real person who is a slow typist. So its
terse ... still, you are expected to read it.
Some basic knowledge of Perl language is required since some of the definition
attributes are often Perl expressions.
People who never installed a CGI script on their Web space provider's server
find the installation "not trivial". Such installation is suggested for testing
and development of applications. Port finished solutions to your ISP's server!
What platform does it run on ?
WODA runs on any platform which supports Perl and CGI interface to a Web
server. We know that it is running smoothly on any UNIX system such as HP-UX,
Linux, FreeBSD, SGI ... With zero limitations (since 3.300) WODA runs on
Windows NT and Windows 9x with Apache or Xitami servers.
What browser to use when working with WODA ?
Most browsers which support forms and tables will do for the basic features.
Oldest browser where the user would not be significantly handicapped is
Netscape Navigator 2.0. Advanced applications may use frames, JavaScript and
Cascading Style Sheets. This requires Navigator 2.0+ or Explorer 4.0+. WODA's
author is conservative about building latest browser features into WODA. He
uses Mozilla as a reference browser.

The Babylonian civilisation in Mesopotamia replaced the Sumerian civilisation
and the Akkadian civilisation. We give a little historical background to these
events in our article Babylonian mathematics. Certainly in terms of their
number system the Babylonians inherited ideas from the Sumerians and from the
Akkadians. From the number systems of these earlier peoples came the base of
60, that is the sexagesimal system. Yet neither the Sumerian nor the Akkadian
system was a positional system and this advance by the Babylonians was
undoubtedly their greatest achievement in terms of developing the number
system. Some would argue that it was their biggest achievement in mathematics.
Often when told that the Babylonian number system was base 60 people's first
reaction is: what a lot of special number symbols they must have had to learn.
Now of course this comment is based on knowledge of our own decimal system
which is a positional system with nine special symbols and a zero symbol to
denote an empty place. However, rather than have to learn 10 symbols as we do
to use our decimal numbers, the Babylonians only had to learn two symbols to
produce their base 60 positional system.

Now although the Babylonian system was a positional base 60 system, it had some
vestiges of a base 10 system within it. This is because the 59 numbers, which
go into one of the places of the system, were built from a 'unit' symbol and
a 'ten' symbol.

Stockholm - The man charged by Swedish prosecutors on Monday with the murder of
Foreign Minister Anna Lindh said in his confession that voices in his head,
including Jesus, told him to do it.

"I don't know, I think it's Jesus. That he has chosen me," Mijailo Mijailovic,
25, said according to a transcripts of his confessions.

Mijailovic, who has a history of mental problems, said the September 10 attack
on Sweden's popular foreign minister was a "cry for help."

Prosecutors said he stabbed Lindh 10 times on her chest, stomach and arms as
she was shopping at a Stockholm department store. The 46-year-old politician,
who was touted as a future prime minister, died from her injuries the following
day.

Mijailovic's lawyer, Peter Althin, said he would request a psychiatric
screening of his client during the trial.

Premeditated

Police and prosecutors said the attack was premeditated.

"The main proof is the technical evidence, that Mijailovic's DNA is on the
knife and that Anna Lindh's blood is on the knife," said investigator Christer
Nilsson.

Mijailovic's confession came after nearly four months of denials. According to
transcripts of the confession, he said the attack wasn't politically motivated
and that he didn't have any hard feelings toward Lindh.

"It could have been anybody, but I heard the voices, I couldn't resist the
voices," he said.

Mijailovic said he had been denied psychiatric help at hospitals in the area
before and after the attack.

Confession not main evidence

Lead prosecutor Agneta Blidberg said the main evidence against Mijailovic
wasn't the confession, but DNA evidence linking him to the murder weapon, a
craftsman's knife. Lindh's blood was also found on his clothing.

"Our evidence was strong enough to press charges without his confession,"
Blidberg said, adding that she would call three witnesses to testify: Anna
Lindh's friend who was with her during the attack, the coroner who did her
autopsy, and a British forensic expert that analysed the murder weapon.

"I can't really remember when in my 30-year career I have seen a murder charge
with such a high level of proof," said Leif GW Persson, a criminology professor
at the National Police Board.

Mijailovic could be sentenced to between 10 years and life in prison, or to a
mental hospital if found not mentally competent. Sweden, like other European
Union countries, does not have capital punishment.

końca zgodne z naturalnym, przypisanym człowiekowi sposobem postępowania.
Tolerować, to znaczy godzić się na to, że ktoś burzy mój obraz świata,
przypisany tylko mnie mój wewnętrzny ład, moje własne widzenie świata.
O ileż lepiej mówić o miłości, miłości własnej, a potem o miłowaniu otaczającej
mnie rzeczywistości. Chodzi o miłość nie zwyczajną, nacechowaną porywami serca,
raczej o spokój, o zgodę z samym sobą
i otaczającym nas światem. Tolerancja jako pojęcie zostało wystawione na ciężką
próbę konfrontacji naszego zburzonego po 11 września 2001 roku świata iluzji,
że oto


tylko wystarczy zaprojektować świat dobra, miłości i pojednania, a już
wszyscy się zbiegną aby oklaskami nagrodzić nasze wysiłki.
Etyka po 11 września nie jest już tą samą etyką, którą wyznawali Kotarbiński,
Tischner, czy Ossowscy. Musimy, mówiąc, czy też raczej używając pojęcia
tolerancji skupić się na pojedynczym człowieku wokół którego będziemy budować
próbę porozumienia. Budowanie więzi interpersonalnej, wysiłek opowiedzenia o
sobie, jako o indywiduum, wysłuchanie czyjejś opowieści - to jedyna szansa na
porozumienie dwóch obcych sobie ludzi, dwu światów różnych, albowiem jak wiemy
każdy człowiek to inny świat.

Naiwnością byłoby dzisiaj po doświadczeniach sprzed roku postulowanie
realizacji tolerancji za wszelką cenę. Znakomita włoska dziennikarka Oriana
Fallaci w swoim wystąpieniu po ataku na wieże nowojorskiego Manhattanu
napisała: nie rozumiem, dlaczego mam kochać kogoś,


kto z premedytacją burzy wszystko, co nowożytna cywilizacja wypracowała
wspólnym wysiłkiem całych pokoleń narodów, ras i wyznań. Tego głosu lekceważyć

Fakt - doświadczenia minionych pokoleń nie były w tej historii najlepsze.

Prawda chyba jest taka, w momencie, gdy ma się do czynienia z ludzką biedą i
ułomnością, dotknięty nią nigdy nie szuka przyczyn swoich problemów w sobie
samym, najprościej jest zwalić winę za własne kłopoty na kogoś drugiego. Żyd w
tym momencie jest idealny, nie ma go w pobliżu, jest niesprecyzowany,
niewidoczny, pasuje jak ulał na alibi dla cudzego nieszczęścia. Najtrudniej
tłumaczyć dlaczego się coś lub kogoś kocha. No bo jak to powiedzieć, aby
uniknąć banału. Język bywa posłuszny tylko w momencie zagrożenia, tylko w
chwili w której dokonujesz wyboru możesz powiedzieć przekonywująco o swoim bólu.

Codzienność jest kłopotliwa, bo co powiesz komuś, kto na widok mojej twarzy na
ulicy nie umie ukryć zaskoczenia widokiem.

Tłumaczenie wspólnoty losów historią jest też o tyle nietrafne, że codzienność
ma nad historią przewagę. Dzianie się tu i teraz jest


o wiele silniejsze, niż próba przywoływania zdarzeń odległych. Polscy Żydzi
zawsze musieli się tłumaczyć ze swojej niefortunnej miłości do widoków, które
zabierali ze sobą, gdy udawali się na kolejną w swoim życiu tułaczkę.
Przez dziesięciolecia Polacy nie czuli się w Polsce jak u siebie w domu.
Łacińska zasada "dziel i rządź" skutecznie stosowana przez lata w podzielonej
przez zabory Polsce nie miała czasu na zaniechanie jej działania w okresie
międzywojennego dwudziestolecia.

Okupacja hitlerowska jeszcze bardziej te zasadę umocniła, a istnienie nie
suwerennej Polski po II wojnie niczego w myśleniu Polaków nie zmieniło. W
powszechnym przekonaniu do dziś w Polsce rządzą obcy.

To przekonanie nie zmieni się na skutek pobożnych życzeń intelektualnych elit.
Co zatem należy uczynić, aby Polacy zaczęli rozumieć, że są we własnym domu i
że tak naprawdę nikt obcy im nie zagraża?

In what the avant garde might call a transgressive work of performance art,
Israel's ambassador to Sweden, Zvi Mazel, wrecked Friday an exhibit in
Stockholm's Museum of National Antiquities depicting a Palestinian suicide
bomber.

Located in the museum's courtyard, "Snow White and the Madness of Truth"
depicted a smiling Hanadi Jaradat, the Maxim restaurant suicide bomber who
killed 21 patrons and staff as well as herself on October 4. Her photograph was
placed on a little boat floating in a basin filled with water dyed red.

The ambassador was a guest at the opening of the museum's exhibition, which is
linked to an international conference on genocide, "Stockholm International
Forum: Preventing Genocide - Threats and Responsibilities," to be held January
26-28.

Israel has threatened to boycott the conference if the museum's "Making
Differences" exhibit on the Middle East conflict is not dismantled, Army Radio
reported, saying that the exhibition breaks understandings Israel reached with
Sweden.

"This was not a piece of art," the ambassador told Sweden's SR radio news
station. "It was a monstrosity."

"For me it was intolerable and an insult to the families of the victims," he
said. "As ambassador [of] Israel I could not remain indifferent to such an
obscene misrepresentation of reality."

Museum director Kristian Berg suggested that Mazel endangered those in the
museum. "He pulled out the plugs and threw one of the spotlights into the
fountain, which caused the entire installation to short-circuit and made it
totally life-threatening," Berg told Swedish news agency TT, AFP reported.

The museum director said he did not consider the artwork to be a
provocation. "It is rather an invitation to think about why such things happen
in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict," he said.

Swedish Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Anna Larsson said the ambassador will be
asked to explain his attack. "We will ask him to explain and from our side we
will maintain that it is unacceptable to destroy works of art in this way,"
Larsson said.

The artists behind the installation are musician Dror Feiler - himself an
Israeli Swede - and his Swedish wife Gunilla Skold Feiler. Feiler, who
described the ambassador's actions as "vandalism," announced that he would not
perform as long as Mazel was present. The museum director requested that the
ambassador leave, then escorted him out.

Feiler told the Associated Press that his installation aimed to call attention
to how weak people left alone can be capable of horrible things. "[Mazel] tried
to stop free speech and free artistic expression from being carried out in
Sweden," Feiler said.

As a political activist, Feiler is president of Jews for Israeli Palestinian
Peace, which initiated a campaign entitled "Jewish Manifesto: Sharon is
Israel's Worst Enemy."

Feiler describes himself as the "eye-bleeding ultimate composer of intifadic
and eruptive lung-outs."

Without humor and things to laugh at, life would have no meaning.. "Never take
life too seriously; you won't get out of it alive in any event", my father used
to say.

I have found, , that laughter and humor are great healers. People often leave
my group therapy sessions laughing tears rather than crying them. I have
developed the use of humor and laughter as part of my philosophy concerning
insight and enlightenment. A truly spiritual person is a light-hearted one.

I coach humor in my courses and seminars, because I believe that a comical
style of communication can be cultivated and learned. It can be a chosen way of
life. I have witnessed, in my own life, how humor and laughter are the
necessary ingredients in raising a family, operating a business, leading
people, and dealing with changes and stress. Mahatma Gandhi once said, "Without
a sense of humor, I would have committed suicide a long time ago." So they
killed him.

Humor helps us to see our everyday drama from an aesthetic distance. It might
be the same reality; it just looks different. A woman who came to my yearly
humor course said she was attending because she felt like a victim. When, at
the end of the course, I asked her if she still felt like a victim, she
said, "Oh, yes. I just enjoy it more now.


" Humor is the creativity to take any condition and change reality to fit our
lenses. We might not be able to change some things, but we can sure learn to
laugh at them. Laughter supports us in knowing that we are in charge of the
situation, and not the other way around.

My grandmother used to say, "Laughter is the best medicine." Today researchers
are trying to find out if my grandmother was right. She certainly was. It is a
fact that many hospitals in the USA and around the world, are taking the
subject of humor and laughter very seriously in combating a disease
called, "Stress Related Illnesses."

Victor Frankl was a prisoner in a Nazi Death Camp. His words, "The Nazis can
take everything away from me except one thing: My reaction to the situation."
He chose laughter and humor, and as a result chose life. His own statements
concerning fellow inmates at Auschwitz who died by despairing rather than
laughing, "In order to rise above this terrible situation", shows that humor
and laughter are tools for survival.

Laugh a lot, because when you do you can't hate, be angry, or scared. If you
laugh, you'll feel better about yourself and just about anything else.

FIRST QUARTER
It might have been Super Bowl XXXVIII in all the pregame hype, but on the field
it was more like Super Bowl ZZZZZ given the somnambulistic pace of the game.
The first quarter ended in a scoreless tie, the first time that has happened
since Super Bowl XXVI between Washington and Buffalo.
From the beginning, it was clear that the New England defense was going to
control the line of scrimmage. How clear was it? On their first three
possessions, the Panthers managed only three yards of total offense and only 13
yards in the quarter.

Compounding the Panthers’ problem was poor field position – their first four
drives started from their own 23,. 20, 11 and 8-yard lines. Stephen Davis,
whose 1,444 yards in the regular season made him the NFL’s seventh-leading
rusher, had only 18 yards on six carries. Jake Delhomme, under constant
pressure from New England’s Jarvis Green, Ty Warren and Mike Vrabel, connected
on only one of his six passes in the period.

Not that New England was much better. The Patriots took their first drive down
to the Carolina 13-yard line, but Adam Vinatieri missed on a chip-shot 31-yard
field goal that sailed wide right with 10:29 left in the quarter.

The normally conservative Patriots, who finished with just 58 yards of total
offense, even attempted a reverse by Troy Brown, but the wide receiver was
dropped by Carolina linebacker Will Witherspoon for a 10-yard loss.

ARAFAT, Saudi Arabia: In a sermon that was remarkable not only for its strong
language but also its timing, Saudi Arabia's top cleric called on Muslims
around the world on Saturday to forsake terrorism, saying those who claim to be
holy warriors were an affront to the faith.

At the climax of the annual haj, Sheik Abdul Aziz al-Sheik told 2 million
pilgrims that terrorists were giving their enemies an excuse to criticise
Muslim nations.

Mr Al-Sheik who is widely respected in the Arab world as the foremost cleric in
Saudi Arabia spoke at Namira Mosque, a televised sermon watched by millions of
Muslims in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states.

The mosque is close to Mount Arafat, where the pilgrims converged on Saturday
for the climax of their annual trek. This year's haj has been carried out amid
heightened security after a year of terror attacks in the kingdom.

"Is it holy war to shed Muslim blood? Is it holy war to shed the blood of non-
Muslims given sanctuary in Muslim lands? Is it holy war to destroy the
possession of Muslims?" he said.

A large number of the victims of suicide attacks in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Iraq
and elsewhere have been Muslims.

In speaking of terrorists who killed fellow Muslims, Mr al-Sheik was clearly
referring to the Prophet Muhammad's final sermon, delivered on Mount Arafat 14
centuries ago.

It must be the end of Hamas too.
