Los Angeles is now the murder capital of the United States. This is the
difference here between the U.S. and Iraq. Saddam Hussein kills his own

Yesterday, President Bush signed a law to create the Department of Homeland
Security. Their first job is to protect Americans against Ohio Stat football
fans.

This past Friday, the U.S. Congress adjourned for the rest of the year. Why
not? A job well done, everything’s going smoothly. Take a break guys, and give
yourself a raise while you’re back there too.

Happy birthday to the Bush twins. They turned 21. And for the first time, they

episode the kid with the purple hair gets whacked.

I like to watch Ozzy with mom. Every time they bleep a word out she has to tap
her hearing aide.

McDonald’s is not going to accept credit cards. Well…now if you’re on a date
and only have a buck-seventy-nine than you have the perfect solution now!

The U.N. weapons inspectors in Iraq haven’t found any bio-terror labs yet –
they did however close down an Olive Garden. They weren’t wearing their
hairnets.

You know it’s the holiday times and you see those little displays in the store
windows. You should see the display they have over at the Sachs 5th Avenue.
They have a display with some elves holding Winona Ryder until the police show
up.

Have you seen the big Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center? They bring that
tree in on a truck, then use a big crane with a harness to put it up.
Coincidently that’s the same crew that helped President Clinton have sex.

It’s official – L.A. has beaten New York to become the murder capital of the
United States. 54 guys murdered over the weekend and that was just UCLA
football.

The Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce is trying to put a positive spin on this
whole thing. They say, "Yes, we have the most murders, but there’s very little
humidity.”

The number of pedestrian deaths in Southern California last year jumped from
354 to 389. Which is amazing. There are 389 people walking in Southern
California?

L.A. Mayor Jim Hahn is overseas right now on a mission to get more foreign
tourists in Los Angeles. Is that a problem? Not enough foreigners here in
L.A.? I think the problem is trying to get them to go home!

Michael Jackson had a quiet weekend. He just hung with his kids.

Earlier today, Michael’s 8-month old son said his first word – Help!

Today, "Playboy Magazine” announced they’re laying off 8% of their work force.
How bad is the economy when guys stop looking at naked women? (pretends to
cry) "I can’t look at this anymore.”

People are already starting to get in the Thanksgiving spirit here. Can you
feel it? I was coming to work today on the freeway and three people flipped me
the bird.

"People magazine” has named Ben Affleck "the sexiest man alive.” Why do they
keep specifying the "alive” part? Are they trying to keep out Al Gore and
Keith Richards?

And finally, police in France say that the fourth time in less than a year, an
elderly man has robbed the local drug store of its entire stock of Viagra. He
shouldn’t be too tough to pick out of a line up!

I’m in a great mood this week because it’s a holiday week. Thanksgiving is
this week. Did you know that Thanksgiving week is the biggest tourist week in
New York City? Hey nothing says Thanksgiving better than room service turkey.

New York City is America’s number one tourist attraction! (applause) Yeah and
number two is that Disney cruise ship where people get that deadly stomach
virus.

You can always tell when people aren’t from New York City. Today I saw a
couple trying to hail an off-duty hooker.

Don’t kid yourself that Saddam Hussein is a psychotic madman. In one of his
palaces he has this pool of acid and when someone comes over that he doesn’t
like he gets rid of them in this pool of acid. It’s not cheap to have a pool
of acid. It requires heating, chlorine for the acid, then you have to have the
pool guy come once a week, then there’s skimmers and then covering it during
the wintertime. It’s not cheap.

It’s Thanksgiving week like I said earlier. Today Michael Jackson was dangling
a turkey from a hotel balcony.

According to a new study by "National Geographic", only 13% of young Americans
surveyed could even locate Iraq on a map. Thank goodness our bombs are smarter
than our kids.

An aide to the Prime Minister of Canada called President Bush, "A moron."
Here's a guy that never worked a day in his life, lived off his dad's money,
lost the popular vote and ended up President. That's not a moron, that's a
genius!

The Memphis Grizzlies lost again last night. They are 0-12. In fact, Jerry
West said it was disappointing, if he wanted to run a losing basketball team,
he could have stayed with the Lakers.

Senate Democrat leader Tom Daschle on television this week whining thatthat
radio talk show hosts like Rush Limbaugh are inciting listeners to make
physical threats against Democrats, which is a federal crime. Threatening an
endangered species, you can't do that!

Rodney Dangerfield on the show tonight. It's his birthday. Rodney is 81 today
or as Anna Nicole Smith call him, "The Bachelor."

The Story of Hanuka (Chanukah)

When I look at the Hanuka candles I connect with my ancestors. Their actions
are as fresh today as they were nearly twenty-two centuries ago. Their motives
and those of their enemies seem to be constants of human nature - as do their
frailties. It is the quality of Judaism, which remembers (and is rooted in)
the constants of human nature, which makes it forever young yet forever old
and forever relevant.

In 200 b.c.e. Antiochus III, the Syrian-Greek ruler of the Seleucid kingdom,
defeated decisively Ptolemy IV, the Egyptian-Greek king, at Panium near the
source of the Jordan. Both the Ptolemies and the Seleucids were successors to
the empire of Alexander the great. For a hundred years the Ptolemies had ruled
Judah from Egypt while the Seleucids tried to wrest it from them.

The Ptolemies' main interest in Judah was levying taxes. This they did through
the hated system of tax farming. Leading citizens would go to Alexandria and
bid for local tax collecting privileges. Anything above their bid which they
collected, they could keep. Anything less had to be made good from their
personal fortunes. There were laws to limit the profits of the tax gatherers
but there were also laws to encourage informers on tax evaders. Certain
families cemented and multiplied their wealth through tax gathering. The most
prominent such family, in this era, were the Tobiads.

Garrison towns became quickly hellenised and the ruling classes tended to
favour assimilation to Greek ways. But the countryside remained staunchly
traditional and Jerusalem was an uneasy mixture. The Ptolemies left Jewish
religious autonomy intact and the high priest continued to serve a dual
religious and administrative role dating from Persian times. He held office
for life but ruled with the aid of a council of elders. The high priest's
administrative role was diminished by the existence of the tax farmers. The
upper classes in Jerusalem held a spectrum of views ranging from the very
traditional to strongly assimilationist. By the time of Ptolemy's defeat,
Greek names were fairly common amongst the Jewish upper classes.

The taxes were very oppressive. Antiochus consolidated his position by
promising tax relief. In return, the Jews of Jerusalem welcomed him and helped
to oust Ptolemy's garrison there. For a few years everything worked well, and
apart from the temporarily lower tax rates, nothing really changed under
Seleucid rule.

But it did not last. In 190 b.c.e. Antiochus III suffered a severe defeat at
the hands of the Romans. The Romans insisted on a huge war indemnity and took
one of the king's sons, the future Antiochus IV, to Rome as a hostage. From
then on, the Seleucid king always had financial problems and sought money
wherever he could. Antiochus III met his death attempting to plunder the
famous Elamite temple in 187.

His son, Seleucus IV was faced with the same financial difficulty. Tax rates
were raised and strictly enforced. The government schemed with leading men of
the various subject peoples to plunder their temples and national treasures.

In Jerusalem, one Simon, of the Tobiad tax-gathering family, was overseer of
the temple. He clashed with the traditionalist high priest, Jonathan III, who
dismissed him. In revenge, Simon went to the governor and told him of the
enormous treasure concealed in the Temple. As a result, Seleucus IV sent the
royal treasurer, Heliodorus, to expropriate the treasure. Jonathan pleaded
that most of the money was private deposits given to the sanctuary for safe
keeping. Heliodorus returned empty-handed. Some say that when he entered the
sanctuary, he was scourged by a terrifying horseman and two youths.

In 175 Seleucus IV was assassinated by Heliodorus. Seleucus' brother,
Antiochus IV, became king. He had returned from Rome after a fifteen year stay
as hostage. Antiochus was an aggressive helleniser with a strong taste for
things Roman. He introduced gladiatorial contests at Antioch and erected
Athenian-style temples and public buildings in Syrian cities. He styled
himself "Epiphanes" ("god incarnate") but his detractors called him "Epinanes"
("violent" or "insane").

Jonathan, the high priest, had a brother, Joshua. He was a Hellenist and
changed his name to Jason. He wanted to impose Hellanic education on his
people and "modernise" them. He went to Antiochus IV and offered him a huge
sum of money if he would depose Jonathan. He also promised to open in
Jerusalem a gymnasium for athletic games, and other hellenising measures.
Antiochus was only too glad to agree; defying tradition, he banished Jonathan
to Antioch (174).

Jason pursued his hellenising policy aggressively. He even sent money, on the
eve of an Olympic games festival at Tyre, to purchase sacrifices to the
Phoenician Hercules. The young Jews in the delegation refused to take part in
this idolatry and gave the money to the royal treasury for ship-building
instead.

Traditional Jews were outraged by Jason's activities.

Jason lasted three years. A certain Menelaus of the Tobiad family decided to
usurp the high priesthood. Jason had sent him to Antiochus with the tribute.
Menelaus offered the king 300 talents above what Jason was paying. Antiochus
agreed and Jason fled across the Jordan.

Menelaus found it difficult to raise all the money he promised. One time he
was summoned to Antioch to explain. He took some Temple vessels as a bribe for
the king's representative, Andronicus. The old priest, Jonathan, denounced
Menelaus as a looter. Andronicus had Jonathan murdered. The murder caused such
an outrage, even amongst Greeks, that Antiochus executed Andronicus. Menelaus
remained high priest and continued the policy of looting the Temple to pay the
tribute.

While he was in Antioch, Menelaus had left his brother, Lysimachus, in charge
in Jerusalem. An outraged mob repulsed Lysimachus and his soldiers from the
Temple treasury. Three elders went to Antiochus in Tyre to denounce Menelaus
as author of the troubles. Antiochus refused to listen and had them executed.
This act convinced Jews that they must direct their struggle against Syrian
rule altogether.

In 170 b.c.e. Rome was distracted by a new war against Macedonia. Antiochus
took the opportunity to invade Egypt. When rumours spread that he had been
killed, the Jews of Jerusalem were Jubilant. Jason returned at the head of
4000 men (better the "moderate" Hellenist than the tyrant Menelaus). Menelaus
fled.

But Antiochus was very much alive. He came to Jerusalem and put down the
rebellion with great ferocity. He also plundered the Temple of anything of
pure gold. Jason escaped and Menelaus was restored.

In 168 Antiochus went again into Egypt, and it looked as if he would oust the
Ptolemies. While he was at the gates of Alexandria, the Roman senate sent him
an ultimatum to halt his invasion or be considered an enemy of Rome. Antiochus
was awed by Roman might, having spent fifteen years in Rome. He withdrew in
short order.

With time on his hands, and injured pride, Antiochus devoted his energies to
hellenising and homogenising his empire. Judah was clearly the most resistant
province.

Antiochus began with a campaign of terror. He sent General Apollonius, at the
head of a large army, to Jerusalem. Entering on Shabbath, he killed men in the
streets, abducted women and children and demolished houses. Terrified
inhabitants fled the city in large numbers. Their homes were occupied by
Greeks and Syrians.

Apollonius converted the City of David (south of the Temple) into a garrison
stronghold and renamed it Acra. The garrison in Acra would remain a thorn in
the flesh of Judah for the next quarter century.

United We Stand



They came to destroy, but they only achieved bringing out a dormant spirit in
our people. They attempted to create chaos, but instead they brought together
a nation. They thought they would cower our people yet on one of the planes
they hijacked, brave Americans overpowered them before they reached their
target and sacrificed their own lives to save those of their fellow citizens.
They thought they could transport their hatred of America to our shores,
inflict us with death and destruction, and escape to their vision of heaven by
suicide, but they just damned their cause to hell.

This barbaric attack on New York and Washington, D.C. targeted our landmarks
but the victims were civilians. Those that are still missing, over 5,000 of
them, were just people doing their jobs. Mothers, fathers, sons and daughters.
Members of every race and every religion. People from many countries and from
every walk of life. And of course, the bravest and finest, our firemen and
policemen, who responded to the tragedy to help those in distress.

Who could forget the passengers on board the planes that these terrorists
used as guided missiles - the innocent passengers who were at the wrong place
at the wrong time. Those that designed this well-planned attack did not have a
care in the world for those that would be killed. The perpetrators were so
filled with hatred for our country, they did not care who died as long as
there were many deaths.

Except for our fellow Americans, the people that identified the most,
sympathized and empathized the most with our country were the people of
Israel. They declared a national day of mourning as they grieved with us over
our losses. The mayor of Jerusalem, Ehud Olmert, spoke with Mayor Giuliani at
an additional ceremony held in Israel to express their condolences and support
for our city and our country. Reportedly, one of the aims of the terrorists
was to punish America for our friendship with Israel and to force us to
abandon this friendship lest more of our people be murdered. They
miscalculated, big time, if they thought this was the kind of convincing
argument that would create a rift between Israel and America.

In a twist of irony, now all Americans understand, all too well, the meaning
and consequences that Israel had endured this last year as a result of
indiscriminate terrorist attacks and suicide bombings in their country. No
longer can Americans remain detached when discotheques, shopping malls, buses
& pizzerias are bombed in Israel killing innocent men, women and children
performing their daily routines. And when the Palestinians dance with glee,
shoot off their guns and celebrate the carnage Americans will have a new
understanding of the hatred behind these actions.

The terrorism that takes place on a daily basis in Israel is part and parcel
of the terrorism directed at America. The training camps for terrorists and
the suicide bombers in Palestine are a carbon copy of those that taught the
suicide hijackers that attacked America their trade. The education of the
young impressionable minds of the Palestinians mirrors the hatred taught to a
legion of terrorists that are waiting their turn to kill more Americans.

It is doubtful that from here on America or its citizens can or will, in good
faith, suggest to Israel that after future terror attacks they show restraint
in their response. The last thing that Americans feel at this time is
restraint against those that caused us so much death and destruction.

May God grant President Bush and our Congress the will and resolve to wage
war against terrorists throughout the world. May they be granted the strength
and character not to distinguish between the terror aimed at Israel and the
terror aimed at America in order to shore up its worldwide coalition with Arab
and Moslem allies.

Today in America there are no democrats and no republicans. There are no
liberals and no conservatives. There are no Afro-Americans, no Asian-
Americans, no Hispanic-Americans, and no other hyphenated Americans. There are
only Americans and we are united, one nation, under God ready to defend our
liberty and dispense justice to any who would do us harm.

The Techgnostic Vision
Although I've provided the bare outline of what can be called the techgnostic
or infomystical worldview, I have so far left out one of the most critical
elements: the idea of some prior fall or disruption which has left humankind
cut off from the universal intercommunication, akin to the shattering of
vessels described in the Hebrew Kabbalah. The best exponent of this viewpoint
is Philip K. Dick, whose later writings suggest that at one point the Earth
was part of some vast pan-galactic information network centered around
Albemuth or Sirius, but that the connection was severed (for unknown reasons,
although the time he gives for this event was the destruction of the Temple of
Jerusalem in 70 CE). As a result Dick describes, a Black Iron Prison which
descended around Earth. Finding the Earth cut off from the rest of the
universe, the Sirians dispatched a satellite (VALIS) to try and pierce the
noise blanketing the planet with a divine invasion of a pure, rational,
restoring signal.

From the techgnostic viewpoint, isolated and closed systems must necessarily
degenerate. Entropy sets in once they can no longer exchange matter,
information, and energy with the rest of the universe. Human beings would do
so quite rapidly if they were not constantly taking in new matter from the
environment; apparently humans replace every molecule of substance in our
bodies every seven years or so. Living organisms and ordered systems are
ultimately whirlpools or vortices, patterns of organization which suck in new
matter and energy all the time. They expel entropy into the environment (waste
matter) but reduce it in themselves. (They can't do this forever; eventually
multicellular life must succumb to entropy in the form of biological death.)
But closed systems are entropic systems. Fundamentalisms block new ideas,
closed societies block new innovations, and closed biotic communities block
the introduction of new gene flows. They fall into entropy more rapidly than
open systems.

Thus, the problem of theodicy or the existence of entropy becomes explained as
a severing of communication. The goal of Earth is not merely to join all human
minds into one Gaian planet-mind; ultimately, the goal is to shatter the Black
Iron Prison and rejoin this galactic network, reducing the entropic (Kali Yuga-
like) state in which it is currently in. Dick even hints that this might mean
the triumph over death. Some biologists think organisms acquire genetic errors
throughout their lifetime (whether through wear and tear or some
preprogramming or both), and that death results when the errors so overwhelm
the signal or code of the organism that it can no longer maintain itself in
dynamic homeostasis. The inability of the body to function shuts off blood to
the brain, and thus the code of the personality or identity of the person is
extinguished as well. Death is the extinguishing of information (but sexual
reproduction and culture preserve some of it, in the form of genes and
memes.)

Förordet förleder till otillräcklig uppgörelse
I dag utkommer "Kommunismens svarta bok" på svenska. Det borde vara en dag
fylld av tillfredsställelse. Stéphane Courtois och hans medförfattare har
ställt samman en lika rik som skräckinjagande dokumentation av kommunismens
brott i många länder och på flera kontinenter. Arkadij Waxberg recenserade och
prisade under strecket det franska originalet (22/2 1998). Svante Nordin
kommenterade och hyllade den tyska översättningen (3/7 1998).
Utgivningen av "Kommunismens svarta bok" har vållat debatt i såväl Frankrike
som Tyskland. Den hetaste frågan har varit Courtois jämförelse mellan
nazismens och kommunismens folkmord. Att grupper på den yttersta vänsterkanten
också i Sverige vill anlägga moteld är uppenbart och föga förvånande.
Veckotidningen Internationalen ger i dagarna ut en antologi som heter "Lenin:
Massmördare?". Det är en produkt helt jämförbar med dem som produceras av
förnekare av Förintelsen. En historiker verksam vid Södertörns högskola, Håkan
Blomqvist, menar att Lenins verksamhet var oklanderlig eftersom terror blir
oundviklig i oroliga tider.
I ett avslutande bidrag samtalar Internationalens Jörgen Hassler med Jenny
Lindahl från Ung Vänster, Per-Olof Mattsson från Arbetarmakt och Fredrik
Samuelsson från Folkmakt. Då låter det exempelvis så här: "Jenny: Enligt KGB:s
nyligen öppnade arkiv avrättades 750 000. Fruktansvärt, men det är inte
historiens värsta massmord. Per-Olof: Nåt sånt, kanske en miljon. Sen omkom en
massa av svält och umbäranden, och en del berodde naturligtvis på regimen, men
hur räknar man dom? Jörgen: Enligt FN dör årligen 20 miljoner mänskor av
svält... /.../ Jenny: Vad svarar man när man anklagas för att ha mördat 20
miljoner människor? Fredrik: Kanske ska vi vägra föra debatt på dom villkoren.
Borde vi inte prata om vad vi vill uppnå i stället? Sovjetunionens fall ger
oss en möjlighet att bryta gamla låsningar, gamla konflikter och börja
diskutera något nytt."

Vad som fördystrar utgivningsdagen av "Kommunismens svarta bok" är knappast
dessa röster ur avgrunden. Dysterheten kommer sig av det förord som har lagts
till den svenska utgåvan. Albert Bonnier på Bokförlaget DN har sedan tidigare
ett rykte om sig att vara grovt omdömeslös. Denna omdömeslöshet må passera
okommenterad när det gäller sådant som marknadsföringen av skäligen oväsentlig
tabloidföda. Men den kan inte passera okommenterad när det gäller något av så
fundamental betydelse som kunskapen om kommunismens brott. Albert Bonnier har
givit Arne Ruth uppdraget att introducera "Kommunismens svarta bok" för
svenska läsare. Resultatet är ett mästerstycke av fintlighet, en text vars
uppsåt går stick i stäv med den bok i vilken den ingår.
Jag berör nu tre punkter, de mest anstötliga. För det första: Arne Ruth avtvår
den kulturradikala publicistiska tradition till vilken han själv hör all skuld
för att kommunismens brott har blivit bagatelliserade. Tvärtom nämner han Olof
Lagercrantz som ett föredöme i att sprida information. De artiklar från
Lagercrantz tid eller senare som Arne Ruth anför som viktiga i ett svenskt
sammanhang har det gemensamt att de har blivit publicerade på Dagens Nyheters
kultursida. Förklarligt nog är referenserna ganska få, ty den roll som Olof
Lagercrantz och Dagens Nyheters kulturredaktion har spelat har knappast varit
den påstådda, den av ljusets riddarvakt. Arne Ruths historieskrivning framstår
som ett hån, ja, ett avsiktligt hån mot de personer som verkligen har kämpat
för upplysning.

För det andra: Arne Ruth vidgår kommunismens brott på de punkter där det har
blivit omöjligt att inte vidgå dem men glider över till kapitalismens
oförrätter så snart ett tillfälle yppar sig. Chansen tar han när Kina förs på
tal men framför allt beträffande Kuba. Om Fidel Castro heter det att han "är
ingen ängel". Så konstaterar Arne Ruth: "Men utan en analys av USA:s
Latinamerikapolitik under det kalla kriget blir både Castros och andra
upprorsledares framtoning svår att förstå." Därefter växlar han över till ett
resonemang om folkmord i Guatemala, där "CIA, högern och jordägarna" blir
nämnda som tänkbara anstiftare. Ämnet är viktigt. Dock är sammanhanget att
föra det på tal olämpligt valt. Antologin syftar till att nagla fast
kommunismen vid dess brott, inte att relativisera dessa brott. "Verharmlosung"
kallas den ruthska strategin när det handlar om Förintelsen.
För det tredje: Arne Ruth förnekar att kommunismens och nazismens brott skulle
vara jämförbara, förnekar alltså relevansen hos den enda jämförelse som är
rimlig att göra. Han gör en distinktion mellan "utrotning som verkställs för
att uppnå ett politiskt mål" och "massmord där det inte finns något
bakomliggande syfte". Denna distinktion är ohållbar. Kommunisterna drömde om
att upprätta en socialt homogen (= med våld socialt rensad) stat. Nazisterna
drömde om att upprätta en etniskt homogen (= med våld etniskt rensad) stat. I
det ena fallet såväl som i det andra tillhör folkmordslogiken själva ideologin
och är inte resultat av någon enskild makthavares självsvåldiga agerande. Så
länge denna symmetri inte är godtagen som ett faktum är uppgörelsen med
kommunismen otillräcklig.

Arne Ruth har förtjänstfullt varnat för farorna med makt- och
ägarkoncentration på mediemarknaden. Hans eget av en koncernlogik betingade
uppdrag att skriva förordet till "Kommunismens svarta bok" framstår som en
bisarr bekräftelse på farhågorna.

Why is it important?

Of what significance is the symbolization of the Father and his dead body for
the form of national authority that follows the collapse of a regime? Of what
importance is the mode of death, treatment of the corpse, and the nature of
mourning in bringing closure?

An international team of anthropologists and artists, pose these questions as
they address the end of an authority crisis that spanned most of this century,
and that crystallized around the regimes of Fascist Italy, Nazi Germany,
Imperial Japan, and the State Socialist systems of East Germany, Yugoslavia,
Romania, and the Soviet Union.
