KTO BYL YEHUDI MENUHIN?

World famous violinist who was also a world famous child prodigy. Menuhin was
born in Palestine, but raised in San Francisco. Menuhin died in 1999. Menuhin's
life and career is well summarized on the following linked obituary from the NY
Times. The second obituary is his mother's. It gives some interesting
sidelights not normally found in Menhuin biographies. Including how he got his
unusual first name, which means "I am a Jew", or "I'm Jewish", in Hebrew. Here
are a couple of "Jewish sidebars" on Menuhin not found in web biographies:
Menhuin was a descendant of the Baal Shem Tov, the founder of Hasidism. He was
related to the head of the famous Lubavitcher sect of Hasidism. Hasidim tend to
be much less impressed by this fact than non-Hasidism. They tend to be more
interested in how observant a Jew is, as opposed to who his ancestors are.//
There is a famous Menuhin story that always leaves us mystified if he was "a
holy fool" who should be respected or just a fool. Menhuin always had an
etheral quality about him. He saw himself as a world citizen who advocated
peace in a quasi-mystical way. He entertained thousands of troops during WWII
hoping to give them a moment of transcendent beauty before they left for the
fighting. In 1946 he became the first major Jewish musician to play in post-
WWII Germany for a German audience. Menuhin played a concert, within days of
his first 'German' concert, for a group of concentration camp survivors then
living in a displaced persons' camp in Germany. Menuhin was loudly denounced by
many of the former concentration camp inmates for playing his violin 'for
murderers'. Menhuin acknowledged their suffering, but said, "I want to show
these people [the Germans] that we are not the horrible stereotypes they
believe we are." It is a 'lovely thought' that seeing a Jew playing an
exquisite violin would have a big impact on these people's attitudes.
Maybe "holy fools" like Menuhin do make a difference in some people's attitudes
and do foster a better world. However, maybe Menuhin was just a fool who could
not get his mind around the fact that that most German music lovers, even
Nazis, were perfectly capable of listening to and even admiring Jewish
musicians. However, most Germans were capable of easily putting this admiration
or respect aside and "no Jew" was exempted from death because he was great
musician. This is an incredibly chilling fact. Obituary Mother bio
