The Merrill study added that BNP Paribas, France's biggest listed bank, could require a 7.3 billion euro capital hike, having factored in BNP's recent acquisition of some of the main assets of European bank Fortis.
Merrill added that Credit Agricole, France's biggest retail bank, could need a 3 billion euro capital increase.
Merrill also estimated a possible 8.9 billion euro capital increase at Deutsche Bank AG and a 7.4 billion hike at UniCredit SpA.
However, shares in the French banks fell the most and underperformed share price rises at the likes of Deutsche and UniCredit.
SocGen at one stage fell as much as 11.6 percent to an intraday low of 40.05 euros
