OVER 100,000 RUSSIANS PERISHED IN POLISH CONCENTRATION CAMPS
============================================================
MOSCOW, September 20. /Viktoria Prikhodko, RIA Novosti correspondent/.
"The death toll among Soviet Red Army soldiers imprisoned in Polish
concentration camps in the 1920s was upward of 100,000, according to a recent
Russian-Polish study cited by Vladimir Kozlov, head of Russia's Federal Public
Records Service. By the end of 2001, a report will be issued detailing the
findings, the top archivist added. In 1920, Poland invaded Soviet Russia,
occupying large chunks of Belarus, Ukraine and Lithuania. Thousands of Red Army
soldiers ended up in Polish camps, where they were subjected to summary
executions and often died of starvation, blistering cold, and epidemics. Warsaw
long denied responsibility for the deaths, although by international law, the
state holding prisoners of war in captivity is always responsible for their
fate. Lately, improved Russian-Polish ties have been instrumental in accounting
for the Red Army prisoners of war. Kozlov said that Poles helped Russian
archivists find relevant documents in Polish Interior Ministry and regional
services' archives"
