English Language Collaborative Story Telling Group

An English language collaborative story telling game group exists in Warsaw for English speaking expats. New players are ALWAYS very welcome. The group has a Facebook page:

Collaborative story telling games (role-playing games) are fun for a group of 4+ players. There is no need to know the game rules to enjoy playing but rules do exist. The person who leads the group, devising the story world and its minor characters, makes the rulings. Each player plays a major protagonist. The game is described in English and the characters speak in active speech within the game.

For example, imagine you and the other players face a long dangerous climb up a mountain and you are a professional climber. You might say:

“I will do it!” I take out my climbing gear from my backpack, leaving my backpack with the rest of the team. I begin the climb using my rope and pitons, fastening the rope to my pitons, which I pound into the mountain’s stone surface every 2 meters, all the way up.

It’s as easy as that. Games are story-based. They can involve solving crimes (like Sherlock Holmes), saving yourself from mistaken identity (like the film Memento), or saving the world (like Lord of the Rings). Players play the part of heroes and the Game Master creates the plot the heroes find themselves in. Ideally, the game should take you away from the daily cares of your everyday life and provide a creative outlet of inner expression. You really get to know people by playing with them.

Be aware that this game uses a substantial amount of English language communication skills.

Sounds like a great initiative, and a cut above many of the adverts that I see here.

I am probably going to go through this group and cut out a lot of the spam from language schools and people selling their apartments, because there's just too much of that compared to discussion, which is what this group was originally intended for. But something more constructive like this group you're talking about, or also Events where people get together, like the ones posted by my friend Barbara ("Bidiks")

If we had more actual discussion going on here it would no doubt make the spamming less troublesome. We could afford the occasional spam ad, and also there would be more people around to see the ad.

Therefore the new rule is: adverts which aren't something of a social nature are only tolerated if they are from people offering something for discussion or actively taking part in discussions.

I'll be putting up some new discussion topics today for people to get their teeth into, but if none of them appeal, feel free to start your own one.

        Wow.

        Happy anniversary to this post!
The group is enjoying itself and now offers three types of games - along with two types of game styles: one for hardcore gamers and the other for players as I described in this post. Membership has grown considerably.

There is also "Stowarzyszenie Angielsko Języcznych Ekspatów Pełniących Funkcje Właścicieli – Osób Decyzyjnych Zarządzających Firmami w Polsce" which gets together. This latter group is a discriminating, paid membership organisation however, unlike the RPG group.

If there is something I can help with, just rattle my cage. Lots can be discussed about meeting people and how to go about setting things up. You have to guide me a little because I am not sure where exactly we are "here." The RPG group has been promoted globally and on expat sites all over Poland. The result is that for some expats, we are the first contact in Poland.

Don't be afraid to contact me!
And thanks for the kind words. They are appreciated!
