New to Wrocław

19.03.07, 18:37
Hello everyone,
I recently moved to Wrocław from the U.S. and am looking for other Americans
or english-speakers to connect with. I've visited the city a few times before
and have a basic knowledge of how to get around, but I'd love to find some fun
social activities to join, and to speak english when I get too frustrated with
Polish (I am learning slowly but surely).

Also, any advice on the transition, finding work, etc. is more than welcome.
If you'd like to share your experience with me, feel free to send me a
personal message.

Cheers,
Jim

Hi, Jim. Welcome to the group. I can't remember anyone being specifically from
Wroclaw, but you'll be able to make social contacts on this groups with other
      English speakers around Poland.

What did you move here to do? Interesting line of work?

If you're in the UK, and know other Poles in the UK, I would like to do a spot
of business with you in getting you to bring back to Poland the things the
British who live in Poland need but can't buy.

For a while I was served by the Irish shop on the net, but that has folded. The
size of the delivery needed by English people living here doesn't justify a
separate business, so what we need to develop is a network whereby where the
Poles on GW who are in England and come back know what will be worth buying
there that they can sell at a premium to us here in Poland.

              My own requirement is
              - Marmite,
              - oxo cubes, (chicken)
              - daddy's sauce/HP,
              - sweet mint jelly,
              - (at Christmas only) Christmas crackers, stilton, mince pies and christmas
              pudding
              - creamed coconut,
              - flat-leafed coriander,
              - Heinz cream of tomato soup (lots)
              - prawn cocktail crisps (walkers crisps)
              - diet ginger beer, cream soda, and other fancy diet drinks
              - Quality street
              - Nesquik milk drinks, banana and strawberry flavour (not chocolate flavour,
              you can get that)(lots)
              - The latest copy of Viz.

That's just what I can think of off the top of my head.

I'm ready to give a mark up of 30% on top of what you pay for it.
Obviously goods have got to be in date and merchantable by the time they get
              here.
It'll be good to check if I'm not already over-supplied with somethjing before
              going to the shop.

If any other British or Irish here want to get on on this, the more the
merrier. Please tell all your Polish friends in the UK who take trips back to
              Poland.

You know what, if you miss all that so much why don't you hop on the plane and
do the shopping yourself? If you book early you'll pay less for the airplane
ticket than your 30% mark up smile And you can bring stuff for your friends and
make money. So there you go.
And if you write from Warsaw, there actually used to be a market with some of
the things that you mentioned. The mark up was probably more that 30% though wink

I simply haven't got the time to drive, and the amount you can take on the
plane is not worth making the journey specially. It seems a reasonable offer to
enable some people who would be making the journey anyway the chance to make a
                  little extra.

briefly; i) i don't think i'd recommend living on the ground floor or in a
valley, they had some flooding a few years back. ii) buy some mosquito
repellent for yourself for the summer, rapid growth in population followed the
floods. iii) enjoy the bars, clubs, cafes and restaurants on the main squarewink
iv) i'd recommend visits, easily accessible on the bus routes to the outskirts
of the city, among the housing estates and parks where it is very quiet and
peaceful, a good place to chill out or go for a swim in an outdoor pool... have
      fun!
