Chief rabbis to skip pope's funeral due to Passover preparations
===================================================================
By Reuters
Neither of Israel's chief rabbis will attend the funeral of Pope John Paul II
as they are busy preparing for the approaching Passover festival, a spokesman
said yesterday.
He said Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Yona Metzger and Sephardi Chief Rabbi Shlomo
Amar would instead send the director general of their joint office, Oded
Wiener, to pay respects at Friday's ceremony in the Vatican.
"The chief rabbis had both met the pope, and appreciated his love for the
Jewish people," the spokesman said. "Unfortunately, for technical reasons,
they cannot attend his funeral."

Despite a Foreign Ministry announcement to the contrary, Chief Sephardi Rabbi
Shlomo Amar will not join an Israeli delegation to Pope John Paul II's
funeral.
"Pessah is just a few weeks away and the rabbi has a lot of work to do," said
an Amar aide. "There is the whole kashrut apparatus to oversee, the sale of
Chametz, not to mention the rabbi's duties as head of the rabbinic court
system."
Chief Ashkanazi Rabbi Yonah Metzger will also not make it to the
Vatican. "The rabbi cannot go because it entails being there for Shabbat,"
said a Metzger aide. "He has previous engagements and, therefore, cannot be
outside Israel for Shabbat."
