Adolescent boy slaves in southern Sudan report that their Arab masters
routinely rape them, according to Freedom Now World News, which just returned
from the embattled African nation.

In an exclusive interview with WorldNetDaily, Maria Sliwa, reporter for
Freedom Now and sociologist, discussed the widespread abuse of Sudanese
slaves by their Muslim captors.

Sliwa interviewed Denka chiefs, Arabs and former slaves while on a
recent "fact-finding trip" in the slave regions of southern Sudan.

"The most marked thing that I noted was the admission of rape by a number of
the young boys," she said.

Redeemed slave Deng Ayuel told Sliwa through a Denka translator, "I watched
the Arabs rape my two sisters, and I watched many slave boys being raped as
well. They would often take a girl or boy and do whatever they wanted with
them sexually. I, too, was raped many times by my master and his Arab
friends."

There have been previous reports of female slaves being gang raped in Sudan,
but Sliwa discovered that many male captives were also being gang raped. She
felt it was important to let others know in the hope that slavery in Sudan
might eventually end.

"The more this information gets out, the better," she said.

"This type of sex is very strange to us," Deng Deng, another freed slave,
testified. "Many times during rape, boys would cry so loudly that the Arabs
would stuff rags in their mouths so they could not be heard. I witnessed this
often. If you refuse [sex], sometimes they would shoot you." Deng Deng said
he was beaten many times because he was a Christian and wouldn't convert to
Islam.

The boys described their masters taking them to a "special place" right
before a rape would occur, says Sliwa. As they were being taken to this
place, the boys would try to escape but would be hunted down like animals,
she explains.

The rebels of southern Sudan, a mostly Christian and animist region, are
fighting for autonomy from the radical National Islamic Front regime, which
aims to impose Islamic law on the entire country. Since 1983, about 2 million
people have died from the fighting and war-related famine.

Sliwa described how the National Islamic Front takes slaves,
saying, "Sometimes government soldiers attack a town. They want to make it
into their town. They want to take it away from the civilians. … Then they
take the women and children, and they kill a lot of the elderly."

Those taken are then tied up and forced to walk to "slave centers," says
Sliwa, where they are auctioned off or traded to Arab masters. Both the Arabs
that capture the civilians and the Arab masters are "quite brutal" to them,
she says.

"Not in every single case, but in most cases, they're being victimized and
raped by both the captors and the masters and the masters' Arab friends,"
Sliwa told WND.

Accompanying Christian Solidarity International, to various redemptions in
southern Sudan, Sliwa learned how black Denka slaves are freed. Certain Arabs
called "retrievers" work with the Denka and CSI to free some of those who
have been taken captive. Sliwa says a while back the Denka told the Arab
retrievers that to have use of the Denka land to water their cattle, they
would have to help free some of the Denka slaves. These retrievers make their
money through raising cattle, thus they agreed to help the Denka, she says.

"The retrievers are actually horrified, because they go into these Muslim
towns and they see how these women and children are treated," said Sliwa.

"It's very rare for a Muslim to speak out against another Muslim … but these
guys were speaking out against them."

From her interviews with Arab retrievers, Sliwa learned that sometimes the
slaves have to be bought from their masters, and other times the slaves are
so old and disabled that the masters simply give them away. If an Arab is
having sex with a female slave, the wife may find out and take the slave to
the retrievers herself, she adds.

"The way the wife usually finds out is the slave has an Arab baby," explained
Sliwa.

The National Islamic Front has been threatening the Arab retrievers because
the government doesn't want them to have anything to do with the Denka, Sliwa
says.

"They don't want the Arabs and Denkas being friends," she told WND.

"Many of the freed male slaves come to the chiefs and tell us they were
repeatedly raped by their Arab captors," Nhial Chan Nhial, paramount chief of
Akon, said to Sliwa. "This affects their minds badly. They are subject to
fits of crying, mental problems and are often unable to marry later on in
life."

Sliwa is convinced that the International Criminal Tribunal needs to convict
the Sudan government for their crimes against the black Africans of southern
Sudan and that the U.S. government should investigate the rape and murder
offenses being committed. The media outlets also have a responsibility to get
the news of these crimes out to the rest of the world, she says.

While noting that there are human-rights groups and different church
organizations working to help the people of Sudan, Sliwa said, "I think we
can all do more."

      FAITH UNDER FIRE
      Sudan jihad forces Islam

Women refusing to convert gang-raped, mutilated, says relief worker

Sudan's militant Muslim regime is slaughtering Christians who refuse to convert
to Islam, according to the head of an aid group who recently returned from the
      African nation.

The forced conversions are just one aspect of the Khartoum government's self-
declared jihad on the mostly Christian and animist south, Dennis Bennett,
executive director of Seattle-based Servant's Heart told WorldNetDaily.

Villagers in several areas of the northeast Upper Nile region say that when
women are captured by government forces they are asked: "Are you Christian or
      Muslim?"

Women who answer "Muslim" are set free, but typically soldiers gang-rape those
who answer "Christian" then cut off their breasts and leave them to die as an
      example for others.

Bennett says these stories are corroborated by witnesses from several tribes in
the region. Upon returning to the U.S., he wrote a letter to influential
      members of Congress and activists.

"After witnessing once again the situation on the ground there," Bennett
wrote, "I must ask 'How long will the United States government allow the
Government of Sudan to continue its jihad against the Black African Christians
      of South Sudan?'"

Backed by Muslim clerics, the National Islamic Front regime in the Arab and
Muslim north declared a jihad, or holy war, on the south in 1989. Since 1983,
an estimated 2 million people have died from war and related famine. About 4.5
      million have become refugees.

Victims of jihad to rally at U.N.
Coalition wants world body to condemn militant Islam

Muslim and non-Muslim victims of radical Islamic attacks around the world plan
to demonstrate at the United Nations in New York tomorrow.

An umbrella group called the Coalition for the Defense of Human Rights wants
U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan to appoint a special rapporteur to assess the
status of non-Muslim and moderate Muslim minorities in nations plagued by jihad
      violence.

The coalition also wants the United Nations to condemn "radical Islamism's
jihad ideology," which "divides humankind into 'Muslims' and 'infidels.'"

"The message that the world should hear is that there are victims of jihad
other than the victims of Sept. 11," Walid Phares, a spokesman for the group,
told WorldNetDaily. "It's the same persecution. Now, finally, Americans who
were shielded from jihad terrorism because of American power unfortunately have
      been victimized."

The coalition's general secretary, Keith Roderick, an Episcopal priest, noted
that the U.S. government has been careful to say that Americans are not in a
      war against Islam.

"But I think they need to understand, and be realistic, that a good portion of
the Islamic population in the world perceives it as a holy war against the
West," said Roderick. "It doesn't necessarily mean we have to respond in the
same way, to make a holy war ourselves, but we have to draw attention to the
fact that these instruments of jihad have had detrimental results on the
indigenous societies which have come in contact with Islam over the centuries."

At the Dag Hammarskjold Plaza across the street from the U.N. building, victims
from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nigeria, Indonesia, the Philippines, India,
Bangladesh, Egypt and Sudan will speak, along with Americans who suffered in
      the Sept. 11 attacks.

Maria Sliwa, a representative of the coalition, said she is one of five people
who plan to block the U.N. entrance shortly after noon on Wednesday. She
expects to be arrested along with Rabbi Joseph Potasnik, chaplain for the New
York City Fire Department. The speakers will begin at about 11:30 a.m.

The coalition includes nearly 60 groups, including the Ibo tribe of Nigeria,
where northern states are imposing Islamic law, and Christians of the Maluku
islands in Indonesia, where a group called Laskar Jihad is trying to eliminate
Christianity from the region. Muslims in the coalition include people of the
Nuba Mountains in Sudan who are under threat from the militant Islamic regime
      in Khartoum.

Other members include the American Coptic Association, advocates for Egypt's
Orthodox Coptic Christians, and the Egyptian Human Rights Association.

In a declaration presented in September at the controversial U.N. World
Conference on Racism in Durban, South Africa, the coalition called on Islamic
scholars to condemn the violent interpretation of jihad held by many groups and
movements worldwide. Phares, a Lebanese-born professor of Middle East studies
at Florida Atlantic University, said that for many Muslim scholars, rejecting
groups such as al-Qaida, Islamic Jihad, Hamas and Hezbollah is not difficult.

But wrestling with the theological interpretation of jihad is a challenge,
Phares said, because its violent manifestations are found in the early Muslim
conquests, going back to the Prophet Muhammad.

"So there should be at this point a reinterpretation of the events that took
place in the early (centuries of Islam) by modern Muslim scholars," Phares
said, "so that they are readjusted with international law and relations."

But defining jihad, which can include the concept of a personal
spiritual "struggle," is a task for Muslims, he points out. "What we can do
together non-Muslims and Muslims is to reject terror based on jihad."

The Council on American-Islamic Relations told WorldNetDaily, however, that it
tried to join the coalition, but was rejected. Roderick confirms that the
Washington, D.C.-based Muslim advocacy group was not accepted because of its
defense of militant Islamic regimes such as Sudan's.

"The groups didn't want them," said Roderick. "I think (CAIR) has been at least
tacitly supporters of radical positions that are contrary to our perspective
and what we are trying to do."

Roderick said that in a phone conversation CAIR spokesman Ibrahim Hooper denied
that the Khartoum regime had anything to do with slavery, contrary to the
      claims of human rights groups.

"There are human rights abuses all over the world, including the Muslim world
these are done in spite of Islam, not because of it," Hooper told
      WorldNetDaily.

"Muslims are more than willing to cooperate with those who are sincere and
don't have political and religious agendas to carry out, which I believe these
people do," said Hooper, referring to Roderick's coalition.

Roderick believes the definition of Islam is for the Islamic community itself
      to decide.

"What the victims of jihad have to deal with is how to survive and how to
resist, and that's what we're concerned about," he said. "We can't define Islam
for Muslims, but what we can do is define what is necessary for a strong
Jewish, Hindu or Christian community in an Islamic culture."

The Episcopal priest insists that "Christianity has always understood how to
make accommodations in places where Islam has found itself in the minority."

But when the roles are reversed, he contends, "Islam has never been able to
make those accommodations. There is a built-in triumphalism, and I think that
      becomes a serious issue."

Hooper disputes that view of history, pointing to Christian communities that
have lived at peace under Islamic regimes.

The coalition's declaration at Durban got no response from the United Nations,
      according to Roderick.

"I just don't think it was on their agenda," he said. "I think in fact it was
contrary to the movement of the whole meeting and probably would have provoked
      even more controversy."

The coalition hopes in two years to hold a congress of "dhimmi," the term for
minority groups that live under an Islamic regime. It would invite politicians,
economists, religious leaders and human rights activists to talk about how the
minority communities can "build a sense of cultural integrity, which is the
best form of resistance, and how to build the instruments that will preserve
      your society."
